The I Tatti Renaissance Library continues its outstanding series of Latin Renaissance texts with this new translation of Francesco Filelfo's De Exilio. This is the first translation into any modern language. The complete version, apparently, has never been available before. The translator has collated the various existing texts and edited them for accuracy, resulting in a very complete and scholarly edition. As one would expect from the Harvard University Press. The book is designed as a "consolatio", a imaginary philosophic dialogue among real historical figures, who debate the positives and negatives of being an exile. The dialogue format was an accepted literary convention for expressing philosophic ideas. Readers proficient in Latin will also appreciate having the original text on facing pages, along with the English translation. Nice introduction, good footnotes, and complete index make this an authoritative text for years to come. Font and readability are fine, as is the handsome cover and sturdy binding. Well worth the reasonable price tag for a scholarly book, and a pleasure to read. I hope the people at I Tatti continue to turn out forgotten Renaissance Latin gems like this one. Highly recommended.
