Forbes senior editor Brimelow's alarmist, slashing anti-immigration manifesto is likely to stir debate. He maintains that the 1965 Immigration Act and its recent amplifications choked off immigration from northern and western Europe while selectively reopening U.S. borders to a huge influx of minorities from Third World countries. Many of these latter entrants are unskilled and require welfare support, and those who do work may adversely affect opportunities for poorer Americans, especially blacks, according to Brimelow. Because of multicultural programs, he charges, the new immigrants are not expected to assimilate, and thus they retain their separateness. Illegal immigration?two to three million entries a year?plus one million legal immigrants annually are causing, by his reckoning, an "ethnic revolution," because Asians, Hispanics, Middle Easterners and others shift America's balance away from the white majority, creating a strife-torn, multiracial society. Brimelow calls for an end to all illegal immigration, a drastic cutback in legal immigration, policies favoring skilled immigrants and elimination of all payments and free public education for illegals and their children.

"Immigration has consequences," Brimelow (a Forbes senior editor and a contributor to the National Review) interjects repeatedly through this scattershot, argumentative tract against current immigration policy and practice. Claiming that the 1965 Immigration Act and later legislation in 1986 and 1990 have worsened a host of economic, political, and social problems in the United States, Brimelow cites supporters and critics alike of American immigration policy and his own interpretation of immigration statistics to disprove commonly held beliefs about immigrants' contributions to America, which he believes have been overemphasized. Brimelow argues that our environment is endangered, our public health threatened, our economy strained, our national unity diluted, and our politics fragmented?all by an immigration policy that is out of control and captive to a ruling "elite," which he associates with the liberal establishment and political correctness. The current immigration laws amount to nothing less than a war on white people. That's what we are facing;
a genocide on whites. There is no sane reason to replace an entire people. White people founded and built this country.
My family members fought in wars for this country. And the government is making me a minority in my own country?
Traditional Americans better wake up right away because our country is being stolen.

Peter Brimelow brings a rapier like wit and razor sharp mind to bear on the desires of the left and big business regarding immigration.

(Brimelow has been the editor of many publications, including Forbes, the Financial Post, and National Review. Brimelow was born in 1947 in Warrington, Lancashire, England. He studied at the University of Sussex (BA, 1970) and received an MBA from Stanford University in 1972. Brimelow subsequently emigrated to Canada. After a brief stint as a securities analyst, he settled down in Toronto and became a business writer and editor at the Financial Post and MacLean's magazine. From 1978 to 1980, he was an aide to senator Orrin Hatch in Washington D.C. In 1980 he moved to New York, working mainly for Barron's and Fortune. Brimelow was senior editor of Forbes Magazine from 1986 to 2002.)

Immigration is fine in small doses...but we have imported nearly 20 million folks since Ted Kennedy and others promised in 1965: 1965:

"The bill will not flood our cities with immigrants. It will not upset the ethnic mix of our society. It will not relax the standards of admission. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs."

1986: "This amnesty will give citizenship to only 1.1 to 1.3 million illegal aliens. We will secure the borders henceforth. We will never again bring forward another amnesty bill like this."

2007: "Now it is time for action. 2007 is the year we must fix our broken system.

We have only a little time left to save our country. If a country is defined by its people we cannot allow politicians to import voters they would prefer.

In 1837, Elijah P. Lovejoy, a New England Yankee transplant to frontier Illinois, was martyred by pro-Slavery forces. He had been editor of an anti-slavery newspaper. His voice was silenced, but the ideas that he expressed spread, over the next two-plus decades, to make the abolition of slavery the most important political issue in American politics.

Today's Elijah P. Lovejoy is Peter Brimelow. This journalist was a onetime senior editor and reporter for Forbes and the National Review, America's premier conservative, establishment journals. He was fired (or left) these jobs because he has taken up the irrepressible conflict in American Politics.

The conflict: Immigration

Basically, the United States of America is settled territory with its own unique ethnic heritage. America is therefore under threat from Immigration-specifically through the workings of the Immigration Act of 1965, introduced and supported by the late Ted Kennedy.

The 1965 Act-which has been tinkered with-but not fundamentally altered-specifically recruits people from the Third World, especially Mexico to fill jobs and fill up the country. Brimelow argues that the Hispanic wave is a net drain as they are low-skilled workers with very little ability to move-upwards. Indeed, Hispanics are not moving up, if anything children of Hispanics assimilate to a downward, crime prone permanent underclass. Other races might be doing OK, but they unfairly qualify for affirmative action set-asides, special deals, social welfare programs, and often lobby the United States to carryout policies that aid their tribe at the expense of the American People.

Brimelow writes about the consequences of the continued immigration. Basically, it is a more Balkanized, dangerous, and less-free society. Indeed, since this book has been written immigration driven problems have created such a society. Travel is less free since the 9-11, immigrant driven attack, social services costs are so expensive the United States now faces fiscal problems every year, and elections have become a sharp edged contest, heavy with racial overtones.

Keeping immigration alive is the priority of a toxic mix of cheap labor employers (Republicans) and Cultural-Marxist ethnic activists (Democrats).

Despite the extremely powerful pro-immigration forces, since the book America has hardened its boarders, developed a quicker deportation process, and resisted formidable calls for Amnesty (at least as of this writing). However, the issue will not end until the fundamental truth of America is realized: It is a settled territory with its own unique people-immigrants aren't needed and their mere existence is a problem to the American people.

Easy to read, clear in its arguments, this book will stand for all time as the first shot fired of the modern irrepressible conflict.

I especially recommend the paperback edition where he responds with scathing wit to his critics. Myself I think he blames the 1965 Immigration Act too much. Isn't it jet transport and ease of communication that have shrunk the world and made it easier for people to switch countries? Recently my Canadian born daughter visited me from Arizona en route for a short visit to Egypt to see her American husband there working for a Swiss company. When my grandmother's much loved brother emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand at 16 years of age they never saw each other again.
