Granted, the two-tone illustrations from a book published in 1974 are probably not going to engage today's kids. But the text remains fantastically fresh and exciting. Read it, especially to a group of kids before going on a hunt for the perfect rocks for them. "The size must be perfect. It has to feel easy in your hand when you close your fingers over it. It has to feel jumpy in your pocket when you run. Some people touch a rock a thousand times a day. There aren't many things that feel as good as a rock--if the rock is perfect." So… I just recently got this copy for a friends little kids. Hoping they love it as much. Don’t know yet as I just gave it to them. Illustrations are very simple. It’s just how this author does his books. It’s not my favorite but his message supersedes that. It’s a must have for any little kids that love rocks, or adults.

This is a great book to give to a child who loves the outdoors. I used to read this book aloud every year in my elementary classroom, and my students always loved it. I've never been a big fan of the illustrations, but the story is so unique that I overlook them.
