Storrs has gone to great lengths to document the actual impact of the postwar Red Scare on the political life of the United States. He dug up an amazing amount of primary source material, and with it he is able to re-present the history of the 1950s and 60s in a way no one has done before. He does especially well in tracing the ways that many New Deal figures curtailed or completely abandoned their advocacy of New Deal social programs following the acid-bath experience of going through a loyalty investigation. More telling still is the way the loyalty investigations actually targeted women and tended to regard women in positions of authority and power as suspicious by their very interest in doing anything other than being wives and mothers. The same happened to people of color.

In the end, the portrait of the McCarthy-era investigations that emerges is of a radical defense of conformity itself. The real goal of the investigations seems to have been to restore a pre-1929 status quo economically, socially, racially, and sexually, and to regard as tantamount to treason any questioning of the same status quo.

Read alongside Bob Altemeyer's "The Authoritarians," this book is a clear portrayal of the authoritarian strain in American life (as it exists in every country) doing what it does best: tar any deviation from strict conformity as blackest treason. I only hope things have actually changed.

From the advent of the New Deal in 1932 until the retreat of the liberal wave in the 1970s with the foundering of the Great Society, the American Right (by no means a monolithic entity-but a diverse aggregation of somewhat like-minded individuals and institutions) used every tool at its disposal to first slow, then weaken, then attack the loosely-knit coalition of reform forces that were the driving engine of FDR's creation. One of the handiest weapons in their arsenal was the tradition of anti-communism in American history. The presence of communists, however innocuous, like the so-called Ware Group in the New Deal gave them an opening to discredit the New Deal as a whole, and they quickly moved to maximally exploit that opening despite the personal wreckage their attacks left behind. This was political guerilla warfare fought beneath the notice of most of the public: agency by agency, individual by individual. Storrs' account is at this time the best documentation of the battle between the idealists of the New Deal and their opponents on the RIght. A sobering and sad story, but a must for anyone who wants to get a better understanding of the forces that always rise up in opposition to reform in this country.
