I recently took a much needed trip back to my home land of South Africa, I felt I needed to get back to my roots and visit family to understand who I was again. I'd been working long hours, for up 3 weeks back to back and without much more than 4 days off in-between. I was making good money but had no passion for what I was doing and felt i'd become just another rat in the race.
While waiting for my flight to depart, I picked up Steve's book from one of the bookstores and literally didn't put it down until i'd read it cover to cover. Its embarrassing to admit, but I can't remember the last time i'd read a book in whole. Steve's way of writing really connected with me and has inspired and motivated me to go out on my own and start a business.
Reading this book has made me realise that the tech revolution requires new approaches to business and an overhaul of our education system, which is failing so many students. You won't find this priceless information in any school or university, its real life experience and does not portray a fake overnight success plan like many other books might. For those willing/able to adapt and change with technology, the opportunities are endless.
I've never read a book twice but this is the type of book you keep on the shelf and refer back to, time and time again.
Thank you Steve for sharing your insights and ideas and for ultimately giving me the confidence to go out and work for myself.
If you have not considered yourself as a walking business, if you think that once you leave Uni there's no need to dedicate serious time to learning, and if you are not saving much... you need this book.
My favorite part: the 10 meetings technique to enter a new business area. That alone is worth the price of the book.
One of Charlie Munger's most valuable yet simple lessons is "Invert". By looking at the world in a different way - sometimes even in the complete opposite to convention - we can often distil the truth that's hidden behind inertia, rusted-on attitudes, and ill-informed experts.
That truth is exactly what Steve Sammartino finds with The Lessons School Forgot. By looking at the world in his unique way, Sammartino exposes the mistruths, forgotten realities, and brain-diamonds that suddenly seem obvious - "incentives shape behaviour", "being vs. organising", "society says spend". These are not just lessons school forgot - these are lessons that will help you succeed without becoming a self-help tragic.
