As an experienced UNIX device driver developer, I was looking for reference material on writing drivers for Windows. Recent books on Windows device driver development seemed much more sparse than I was expecting. After using this book, I think it may simply be due the fact that "Microsoft Windows Internals" is such an excellent reference.

The chapters are segregated in such a way that makes it easy to obtain the specific information you are looking for. If you're a novice and are just looking for a How-To book, you would probably do better to consult the MSDN library. However, even for a beginner this book would be good as a reference, and it is phenomenal as a reference for the experienced developer. For myself, I found it very easy to transition into the Windows world from my UNIX universe with this read.

If you aren't particularly familiar with Windows systems development, the first couple of chapters are quintessential, actually. They do an excellent job of pointing to references for tools and reading material which will help your comprehension of the material and your ability to use it. For example, even one of the later chapters pointed me to the exact DDK I needed for the problem I was trying to solve. At the point I read the book, I had no idea there was a separate DDK for that particular problem. This is one of the few books where the informational sidebars are truly informational.

All in all, if you're doing any kind of Windows system internals development, whether device driver level or just trying to understand how parts of the kernel work, this is an excellent reference. Highly recommended!

Maybe half of the world is using Microsoft windows, administering, troubleshooting etc. Everybody know how to click(and maybe know which one) the checkbox, but less than 0.1% knows what is hapening inside, "deep in the water". How data is passed from your program too network interface, or to disk drive? This book will giva many answers, but not all. And unfortunately, as I know, maybe this book is the only one in the world about this subject(if I am wrong, please correct me). It is not an easy reading, you have to know something more about operating systems to understand it. But to cover most of the windows, it should have 2 volumes and 2000 pages. I kindly ask Mr Russinovich and Microsoft to publish more book like this.
This book is not about active directory or how to recipes. It is about kernel, I/o subsistem, memory, etc. Read the content(search inside). About windows inside, i know only one other book, Inside windows storage, but this is about only one segment of windows, and not so deep.(but also good read for "brave" sysadmins)

pretty amazing book over all. you'll need some pretty deep background knowledge to understand this book. and on the bad side some of the wording is very tricky, id dare say that some words are left out. there are parts when he talks about "objects", "object headers", "object body" and then goes on a bit, and refers to "object" when im PRETTY sure he should have said "object body". i catch my self tripping up over things like that a bit too often.. but... again.. an AMAZING book.. i dont think any other book will go this deep in to windows..

I'm keeping this short and to the point. The content is rich and detailed. It truly speaks to how the Microsoft operating system functions on different levels. The book analyzes those different levels and goes into detail on how to use specific tools to "view what's happening".

My synopsis of the book is simple. When you "know what's happening", you can fix the problem. This book addresses various techniques and common occurrences that happen in the operating system and goes into detail about how to resolve them.

I've been diagnosing and troubleshooting Microsoft OS's since the NT3.51 days and wish I had read this book sooner (the rev 1 version).

I wish the book was available in PDF on a CD but alas, no such luck. The book is hardcover and reasonably heavy so it's not always convenient to bring it along. However, the content more than makes up for this lack of convenience.

In a past review I labeled the book a bit of a screw job. That was somewhat unfair. My biggest gripe is the lack of an ebook. In the past the ebook has proved an extremely useful tool and I believe critical to using the information in the book.

Its too harsh to associate Mr Solomon and Russinovich with an obvious action by Microsoft to squeeze a few more dollars from us. It really isn't fair to criticize them as they maintain MS has the final descision of ebook availability.

I have absolutely no issues technically with the book. Its well written as technical tomes can be and I believe accurate. How ultimately useful, is open to debate because of what it lacks.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a very technical analysis of Windows-XP/2K/S2003. Like I would imagine with most readers, I don't need to know everything about Windows but I do need to know everything possible about specific issues. For me, it's primarily the file system (NTFS). This is the best study that I have found. I have read Russinovich's work for years - and used his technical software - and have the utmost respect for him as an engineer, software developer, and a writer (However, he's probably very boring at parties!). For anyone interested in the intricacies of NTFS and other filing systems, I also recommend Brian Carrier's outstanding "File System Forensics Analysis".

I wanted to understand the overall design of the windows os (cutler based versions)

It gave a lot of (very good) detail, but little on the design (except for the I/O chapter, which I did feel touched more on the design of the I/O subsystem) -- the more I read, the less I felt that I a grasp of the overall architecture.

It is useful to contrast it with The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System, which is very rich in both the detail and history of FreeBSD

Man sagt, Windows sei einfach.
