Richard Clarke has devoted two decades of his life to combating terrorism and has served seven presidents. He worked in the White House with George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Nobody is more of an authority on al-Qaeda, the 9/11 terror attacks and Osama bin Laden than this man!

So, it behooves all of us to read what this man wrote if we want to have any hope of understanding America's conflict with al-Qaeda. And here's some of what I learned from reading his book:

1. Bill Clinton was an excellent ally in the fight against terrorism. Here's a quote from page 97 of Richard Clarke's book:

"It was the first of several terrorism funding reviews that I led between 1995 and 2000. At a time of a decreasing federal budget, we took the federal counterterrorism budget from $5.7 billion in 1995 to $11.1 billion in 2000. The counterterrorism budget of the FBI was increased over 280 percent over that period. We also sought additional authorities for the FBI, including extending organized crime wiretap rules to terrorists, making funding of terrorist groups a felony, easing access to terrorist's travel records and accelerating deportation of those associated with terrorist front groups. While most of the funds I sought in 1995 were approved by the White House and its Office of Management and Budget, some were not passed by the Congress."

2. The Republicans in Congress obstructed Richard Clarke's attempts to combat terrorism. Here's a quote from pages 98-99:

"Incredibly, the legal authorities we sought were not approved by the Congress in 1995.

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield and Wolfowitz are still not in jail, and that is truly scandalous.
Every American should read Clarke's book. Not one of the principle actors in this tragedy have been able to refute anything he has written, yet Americans still believe the lies told by Cheney and FoxNews to this day. How does this honor the victims of 911 and all the service members killed and hideously maimed in the Bush wars? The Bush apologists are currently advising Rubio and he would launch another war if he gets elected, and our economy would tank and we would create millions more enemies. But the defense industry would clean up again. What is wrong with Americans? Are they really this stupid? Read this book NO MATTER WHAT your political views are. Read it because you are an American and have a responsibility to know what happened, so it does not happen again.

Against All Enemies is a book every American should read. Richard A. Clarke does a tremendous job by giving a behind the scenes look at how our government acted and felt during Americas War on Terror. Richard A. Clarke has outstanding insight in this book having the previous jobs of being the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence, Assistant Secretary of State for Political Military Affairs, and being the Counter Terrorism Coordinator for the Clinton and Bush terms. Some of the dialect Richard A. Clarke uses can be confusing to those who are not heavily affiliated with politics but for the most part this book is an easy read. Within this book Richard A. Clarke gives extensive background on his job in the White house explaining how he helped the government fight off menacing enemies. The book also contains and ends with Richard A. Clarke's opinion on how the Government handled America in these dire situations. Richard telling you about his career with the addition of his commentary tends to flow nicely through out the book. I feel Richard A. Clarkes opinions of the government are very strong and negative but most likely very truthful. Richard A. Clarke makes accusations like the government put the real enemies on the back burner in order to obtain oil after nine eleven. He also makes the bold statement to say that the government knew Al Queada was planning something before nine eleven but they ignored it. If you are looking to be taken away to another world in a book this book is not for you because Against All Enemies is full of in your face harsh reality. After reading this book you will most likely realize the reality that the government did not handle itself the best during this time of terror and it is clear both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush have made big mistakes.Read more ›

Let me preface by saying... I disagree with Clarke on a number of things before I read the book.

As an individual in the security space, I've previously read Clarke's book on Cybersecurity. Clarke has an outdated and old school, Cold War mentality that doesn't easily translate into the cyber arena. I also disagree with Clarke on a philosophical/political front, however, I do have to say in terms of a more traditional national security sense I think Clarke if very admireable and I look up to the man with the highest regard.

The book did a fantastic job of highlighting weaknesses in the national security space following 9/11, and exemplified a stellar crisis management case study. However, in my humble opinion I feel as though Clarke gloats way too much and single handedly takes credit for such a vast effort. He obviously knows his stuff in this space, but I feel takes more credit than is probably due. Also there is obvious political motives in the book as well, and those while I may disagree, are entitled by the author to be expressed, but I feel the constant political undertone sometimes takes away from the effectiveness of expressing national security matters.

Overall a decent and interesting look if you can look past some of the shortcomings.
