This is a history of modern Palestine like no other: built from the testimony of people who have lived through it. Ramzy Baroud here gathers accounts from countless Palestinians from all walks of life, and from throughout the decades, to tell the story of the nation and its struggle for independence and security. Challenging both academic and popular takes on Palestinian history, Baroud unearths here the deep commonalities within the story of Palestine, ones that draw the people together despite political divisions, geographical barriers and walls, factionalism, occupation, and exile. Through these firsthand reports—by turns inspiring and terrifying, triumphant and troubled—we see Palestine in all its complexity and contradictions, ever vibrant in the memories of the people who have fought, physically and otherwise, for its future. A remarkable book, The Last Earth will be essential to understanding the struggles in the contemporary Middle East.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“At times reminiscent of the storytelling of the iconic Gabriel García Márquez, Baroud mingles past, present, dreams, and fantasy to forge a document that demands respect and rejects pity. . . . Engrossing . . . A vital and inspiring document.” ― Truthout

“Unique. . . .
The Last Earth has the same precision and clarity of language found in his columns, and the same adherence to fact, but it is written with all the pathos and lyricism of fiction. . . . Compelling. . . . Baroud has turned Palestinian history into a page turner without sacrificing truth or integrity.” ― The Jordan Times

“In the finest tradition of people’s history, these sensitive, painful and evocative pieces provide a human face to the painful saga of Palestinian torment and the remarkable courage and resilience of the victims.” -- Noam Chomsky

“This book is a powerful tool to revive and record the human history of al Nakba, the largest, longest, most comprehensive and still continuous ethnic cleansing in Palestine's history. Al Nakba is not a traffic accident but a process subjecting its victims to a constant tragedy across many countries and many decades... a must read for all those who want to see the concealed human dimension of the Palestinian life and suffering.”
-- Salman Abu Sitta, Author of Mapping my Return and the Atlas of Palestine

“Engaging, unforgettable, complex and unique.
The Last Earth provides a unique way of tackling the problem of writing history. Reading The Last Earth is like walking around a gallery of old master paintings, each telling its own harrowing and often beautiful story about the same episode in human history. You may struggle with the names and generations therein, but you know already that this experience is going to be unforgettable.”
  -- Baronesse Jenny Tonge

“Hundreds of Palestinian writers and bloggers around the world sent in their stories and the book was worked out over Skype interviews—all part of Baroud’s Herculean efforts to condense the narrative into complete, rich stories while staying true to each individual account. . . . The loss and forced relocation recorded by Baroud is overwhelming, but important to read and remember.”  ―

Palestinian-American journalist, author and former Al-Jazeera producer, Ramzy Baroud taught Mass Communication at Australia's Curtin University of Technology, and is Editor-in-Chief of the Palestine Chronicle.

"Ramzy Baroud's sensitive, thoughtful, searching writing penetrates to the core of moral dilemmas that their intended audiences evade at their peril. Few are spared his perceptive eye, and only the morally callous will fail to respond to his pleas to look into the mirror honestly, to question comforting beliefs that protect us from facing our elementary responsibilities, and to act to remedy the terrible misery and injustice that he exposes to our view, as we surely can." -- Noam Chomsky.

Baroud's work has been published in hundreds of newspapers and journals worldwide, including The Washington Post, The International Herald Tribune, The Christian Science Monitor, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Seattle Times, The Miami Herald, The Japan Times, Al-Ahram Weekly, Asia Times and nearly every English language publication throughout the Middle East.

He has been a guest on many television and radio programs including CNN International, BBC, ABC Australia, National Public Radio, Al-Jazeera and many others. He has contributed to many anthologies and his 2002 book, Searching Jenin: Eyewitness Accounts of the Israeli Invasion has received international recognition.

His 2006 book, The Second Palestinian Intifada: A Chronicle of a People’s Struggle (Pluto Press: London) has won the praise of many scholars world-wide, such as Dr. Hanan Ashrawi who stated, “His volume presents a compelling narrative of Palestinian victimization without being defensive or apologetic, and with no attempt at disguising or denying internal weaknesses and shortcomings.” Professor Norman Finkelstein praised the work, saying, “In this curious blend of passionately subjective yet dispassionately objective journalism, Ramzy Baroud chronicles the unfolding of the second Intifada in masterful prose.”

His latest book: My Father Was a Freedom Fighter: Gaza's Untold Story, also published by Pluto Press, London (2010), narrates the story of the life of his family, (his family is used as a representation of millions of Palestinians in Diaspora) starting in the early 1940’s until the present time.

Richard Falk, Albert G. Milbank Professor of International Law Emeritus, Princeton University and Special Rapporteur for Occupied Palestinian Territories, UN Human Right Council wrote about Ramzy's Gaza book: "Ramzy Baroud has written a deeply moving chronicle of the persisting Palestinian ordeal that manages to interweave and bring to life the heart-wrenching experience of his family, particularly the heroics of his father, with the daily cruelties of the prolonged Israeli occupation of Gaza, the frequent horrors of refugee existence, and the disillusioning futility of seeking an end to a bloody conflict that goes on and on. This book more than any I have read tells me why anyone of conscience must stand in solidarity with the continuing struggle of the Palestinian people for self-determination and a just peace."

Ramzy Baroud has been a guest speaker at many top universities around the world, including George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Rutgers University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Manchester (UK), University of Ireland (Dublin), University of Washington, Penn State University and the University of Kwazulu Natal, Durban, South Africa, He has also been a guest speaker at the House of Commons in London, England.

I’m obsessed with this author because he has one of the most beautiful styles of writing. I could not put this book down. I cried so hard I had to stop reading because I couldn’t see. Beautifully written and now a staple in history. First hand accounts are central to history and academics. Ten stars!

This is a much needed, moving history, in their own words, of eight Palestinians and their families who were uprooted beginning with Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestine in 1948.

Baroud's book takes the reader through the lives of Palestinians in refugee camps in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Gaza to the present day, all of which are linked by samud, the Arab word for steadfastness.

A very touching and honest review of the horrors of the suffering of the Palestinian people ousted by force from their land to accommodate settlers and their invading army. Humanity is dead.

A book that is powerful, beautiful and devastating all at once. I love the conceptual angle of this book- with its stated aim being to charter a new "history from below." A history told in narrative form that speaks to the depth and richness of peoples lived experience. It's one thing to have a good concept, but it's another to execute it so well. Baroud seamlessly achieves both with this timely masterpiece.

This book stopped me in my tracks. Ramzy Baroud, as a story teller, has written so beautifully, honestly, and insightfully here that I could only take small doses at a time. These victim's stories of the impact of the crime called Israel upon them, brought forward in a profoundly poignant narrative, was deeply moving to me - inspiring and shattering. It is a tribute to Palestinian resilience in the face of traumatic injustice, thus consequentially a call to solidarity and courageous action. The Last Earth reveals our real world yet without ever losing hope. Magnificent!

A truly wonderful book full of individual Palestiinians' stories across time from before the Balfour Declaration to more recent outrages.. It really colours the very brief information on this tragedy and should be compulsory for all human beings who are heartbroken at the treatment of these wonderful people!
