This is a wonderful book exploring creativity within art journals. Perfect for beginners and more advanced artists alike, it encourages growth, habit, repurposing, and getting messy! I especially appreciated the author's words on the importance of establishing a consistent practice, and how the hard work of creating is what brings the magic. My favorite art class in college was bookbinding, so the sections on creating and repurposing books and journals were right up my alley. There are several projects for artists to experiment with various techniques, and the work of guest artists is featured, providing a wider variety of styles and inspiration. I'm excited to start creating some messy art!

Caylee Grey is a South African artist, facilitator of the online Get Messy art journaling community, without any formal training, living in Germany, and likes action steps. She presents her book "Get Messy Art. The No-Rules, No-Judgment, No-Pressure Approach to Making Art - Create with Watercolor, Acrylics, Markers, Inks, and More" which was published by Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry. Grey sees her book as the catalyst, but it is up to the readers to turn that spark into a blazing flame (p. 8). She states: "I, along with the incredible artists in this book, have done a massive chunk of the work. Almost all of it. We’ve learned the lessons, we’ve put in the time, we’ve articulated it all. There’s just a tiny bit of work left to do, and it is yours. It may feel big and insurmountable, but you can do big things" (p. 8).
In the chapter "The Messy Movement" Grey talks about "The Messy Manifesto" and "How to be a messy Artist." The chapters that follow treat topics such as "The Power of the Journal," "The Magic of Habit," "The Anti-Supply List," and "Creating Your Messy Journal." The second part of the book is entitled "The Trail" and includes four parts: 1) Sparks, ") Grow, 3) Cultivate, and $) Connect. The book also includes some additional information (e.g., "Tips for swatching," "Have fun with pen and brush lettering," or "Dyeing paper with coffee"). Furthermore, Grey present s guest artist from various parts of the world with some of their take on art as well as one project from them. The index and the list of resources at the end of the book are helpful. I highly recommend this book to beginning and advanced artists who are open to creative ideas which are outside of "the normal". The book might be nothing for artists who see their art well organized or it could be a challenge to them to "go beyond their borders."
The complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley free of charge. I was under no obligation to offer a positive review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

My daughter likes to paint but is pretty unsure of herself. She will complete a project and then ask everyone for their opinion. Then she gets frustrated and changes everything. Then finally she ends up throwing out her arts because she doesn’t like it at all. This book has been very helpful for her. It helped her to feel more creative and not need outside input from others. Now she is actually having fun with her art instead of worrying about what everyone else thinks about it. Excellent book

I can see that a lot of 'Art and Soul' went into making this book, and I enjoyed reading about other's inspirations, but something is still missing > for me... perhaps rekindling my own spark. I need to be motivated to be motivated, if that makes sense? I like seeing in this book how the instructions, and the featured artists in this book go about creating "pages" and what steps and habits they repeat to be disciplined... good food for thought! But (sorry for the "but"), I am somehow missing the carrot about how to get up and do something every day, for me... however, I think I want to begin... I need a push or a challenge, something that will get me started. By the way, I am (or maybe at this point I was) a self employed freelance graphic designer and illustrator my entire adult life, for over 40 years. So yes, I do know how to draw, pretty well when I put myself to it, but I am still looking for motivation to do it and not only when I have to. I can not understand how I have gotten burned out doing art, if that is what is going on... and I was looking forward to this book to give me perhaps a daily (or even weekly) challenge. It's like I am back to square one, and I am needing some refresher course in prodding my own self. I am not afraid to get messy... I already have constant mess all around me, all the time! (Maybe that is part of my problem.) Maybe it is that I have never been into scrapbooking, or journaling, and I am missing something looking at these pages that I do not feel I am quite relating to.
This book is well thought out, and appears to be made via a labor of love. If you are not in your head as much as I am right now about "creativity" (my bad), and if you are into journaling on a regular basis, then I encourage readers to jump in and try these great suggestions! I will put this book aside, and revisit it when I can make real time to practice what it is asking. It's all good! (I am going thru an elongated artists block right now, hence my crazy artist rant above... And all my art supplies are buried under the clutter in my closets and on my desk. Mia Culpa!)

I know the author of this book, and she’s one of life’s special souls.
In this book she brings together the whole ethos of art journaling and showing up to do art any way possible on good and not so great days. The ethos is creating for wellbeing, having artist dates, making your own journals and not worrying about perfectionism.
In this book she has worked with a large group of international artists and they have collaborated their art journal journey and share their work and ideas.
I am so grateful that she has created this beautiful book which I will treasure.
