I've read several books on this topic as they've become popular. This book is one of, if not the best, on this subject. Thorough, comprehensive, informative, and reader friendly. By listing the benefits of natural substances as well as the most common ailments we face, 'EoNM' is also a great source for cross-referencing, and reinforcing the qualities and inter-relatedness of: vitamins, minerals, and herbs, to not only the physical, but mental. A well made point in this book is that the physical and psychological are strongly related.

With the plethora of nutrient information provided in this book, a critical feature to our health is also focused on and explained in the beginning of the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine.

    Attitude:

Our attitudes affect not only our mental health, subconscious, and ability to achieve small and large goals in daily life, but our attitude is directly related to our physical health.

Of all of the many books about Maslow, the best description I've ever read of Maslow's heirarchy of needs and concept Self-Actualization, is in this book. A questionnaire test follows, that measures our degrees of optimism vs. pessimism. There is also a recommended reading list of books on positive thinking and optimism.

This is a nutrient based book and numerous entries and lists inform the reader what natural remedies can prevent, reduce, and/or eliminate many of the common ailments we face. The bibliography given by the authors can be very helpful for those who want to explore further.

A great overview of natural medicine by two authors who are long respected in the field. In addition to an explanation of what natural medicine is, there are detailed descriptions of how to enhance health, immunity, and longevity through improving cardiovascular and digestive health. In addition it addresses specific health problems which make it a great supplement for those who want to dip into non-pharmaceutical treatment and can't find any professional medical support for doing so.

If you know a doctor who wants to encourage your efforts to take more responsibility for your state of health but who doesn't have the time to take courses, this is a great gift. There are plenty of references to research yet the text material is clear and easy enough for the layman to read. The doctor can give patients some relevant reading material while waiting for the doctor's return to the examination room.

Each of the specific conditions is followed by a review and treatment summary plus suggested lifestyle changes, supplements, and botanical medicines. There are often guidelines within each condition write-up that help the patient decide which treatments are more likely relevant to that person's needs. An example within "Insomnia" is the explanation that melatonin will not have a sedative effect unless the person is actually low on melatonin.

This is a great introduction to natural medicine as well as an ongoing companion throughout one's ups and downs of personal health care.

This book is the single most amazing book I have read on medicine and medical conditions. I have many medical books, and although they are quite definitive with regard to illnesses and mostly orthodox medication as a remedy, this book will open your eyes to a whole new world. The medical community does not treat the body holistically, and i do not mean that in a hippyish, spiritual way, but genuinely. There are so many specialists in the world, each being specifically trained as a gastroenterologist, cardiologist, etc,. but only clinical diagnosticians seem to view the body as a whole. Mr. Michael Murray has extensive knowledge on psysiology and anatomy, and it is clearly evident that he has insight into the genuine reasons for so many illnesses, as he is not under the thumb of pharmaceutical companies that doctors rely on so much. He has covered all the areas of the body, trying to be understandable and as succinct as possible, (this is an encyclopedia, not a text book per se), while not undermining the integrity of the medical information he dispenses. EVERY SINGLE home that can get their hands on this book will benefit for their lifetime. All I can say is there is no other book on medicine that for the lay person, will help them, inform them, and possibly cure them, like this book!

Are you beginning to think that society is becoming over-medicated? Do you pop an aspirin or pain reliever every time you get a muscle ache or headache? How about dropping a quick $25 for your co-pay to your doctor that tells you "Can't really do anything for you. It just needs to run it's course". Next time, save that co-pay and spend it right here. Great suggestions for "alternative" (I use that loosely. Nothing "freaky" in this book) ways to help with your ailment. Great suggestions that work with your body and not against it; which requires more pills to offset the side affects of the pills you are taking. Sound familiar?

I'm no MD, but I do have a background in microbiology. I've found this book very well written, and easily accessible to the public. It is what it says it is: Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine :) and it explains it all.

I did find lacking not seeing a special chapter on cancer but apparently another edition is in the works.

I have not read it completely though. It is more something I use for personal reference, but I am glad I have this book as part of my library. Because it already has helped me make better choice in health and food choices.

Definitely giving it a 5 star review.
