About the Author

William R. Forstchen is the New York Times bestselling author of One Second After, One Year After, The Final Day, and We Look Like Men of War, among numerous other books in diverse subjects ranging from history to science fiction. He has co-authored several books with Newt Gingrich, including Gettysburg: A Novel of the Civil War, Pearl Harbor, Days of Infamy, To Try Men's Souls and Valley Forge. Forstchen holds a Ph.D. in History from Purdue University, with specializations in military history and the history of technology. He is currently a Faculty Fellow and Professor of History at Montreat College, near Asheville North Carolina. He is a pilot and flies an original WWII recon "warbird." He resides near Asheville with his daughter Meghan.

Let me just start by saying I've read thousands of books in my lifetime. I was that little kid carting out as many books from the library as my arms could carry, and not much has changed over the years. I've read all sorts of books that I have found to be insightful/helpful, but I can count on one hand the books that truly, fundamentally changed the way I view the world. This book is one of them, and frankly, the others don't come close. This is a dark, dark topic...science fiction...for now. Nonetheless, I feel lucky to have read it. Like the old saying goes, "Knowledge is power." Naïve no longer.

Perhaps the worst written book in the world. a chilling story, a fantastic story which the author FAILED to do justice.

The story is engrossing and you can't put the book down. But, the writing is so seriously substandard that the second read is frustrating. First of all the author makes sure to mention the antique stores, book store and the other items that will come in most handy in later pages - its a very pedestrian set up: our hero has access to the only old car that will run ( at first) and has a pool full or water while the rest of the neighborhood lose their running water. Secondly, throughout the book there is a constant mention of this famous movie or that....It was like a scene out of _____. and it looked like pictures of _____ after ___ war. This gets old quickly, and reflects a sloppiness in the construction of the story. This is one lazy writer who obviously rushed a first draft to press to pad his wallet. As well, instead of adjectives and poetic descriptions he tosses in brand names, over and over and over....it ends up being quite irritating..
He has half the town dropping of starvation 2 months after the event.... a little too fast being on half rations. As well, the struggle for food is rather glossed over- in this story there was plenty of time for everyone to plant and harvest as much as they could wish for or have seed/land/manpower to cultivate. Note: if you're facing starvation don't plant lettuce. No mention of the water lake teeming with trophy fish. We have a small town and no one has chickens, dairy cattle, goats. Initially, the town plans to save breeding stock but they need their burgers and eat all the cows, pigs, horses. Perhaps two sentences regarding wild food gathering - the environment is teeming with wild edibles. They end up killing ALL the wildlife in the area for food, but in the end there are enough crows to strip a corpse in a day... Oh I could go on. It is very very hard to believe this author is an educated man, but then again, most PhD's have tunnel vision and a poor understanding of the world outside their realm of expertise. The townsfolk gather all the apples in the fall, EVEN the wormy ones. Golly, anyone with an apple tree in their backyard makes use of the less perfect for pies and jam...Real country folk do that all the time. And who of us will watch our beloved family pet slowly starve? Our hero here is one selfish s-o-b. Understandably, his immediate concern is for his daughters need of medicine; What heartless jerk rescues his father-in-law from the horror of a nursing home after the collapse of the utilities and doesn't go back to help the other people? Enter the requisite cannibal hoards, stolen from other books of this genre - this is just old and overdone.
The speech patterns of the townspeople are a bit irritating too, No one seems to speak in a complete sentence, they all like to say Heluva and Atop. Who says Atop? Again. I enjoyed the story immensely and it is a frightening concept, but the writing is just lackluster. I am glad I read the story and I would recommend it to others just for the warning to be prepared - we only have to look at Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico to see that fragments of this story have come true already. I wish I could bring myself to read the sequels, but I fear they may be even worse.

I witnessed the reality of food and water shortages myself one year, 2 days before a massive winter storm was predicted in Michigan. The massive grocery store was swamped - hundreds of people ALL with their carts heaping, lines all the way to the back of the store in every lane, the shelves stripped of water, bread, milk, beer, eggs, even meat and juice etc.. In a true national emergency, the stores WILL be emptied in 24 hours, the warehouses in 1-2. Be prepared...

Having learned that Congress considers this a book all Americans should read, I bought it. I've had a mind toward prepping ever since I read Lucifer's Hammer, probably 25 years ago. This book takes you a step further into the psyche of survival. I marvelled at the ill-prepared, was impressed by unique ideas, and was numbed by the vast destruction.
My biggest disappointment is that Congress and the Pentagon have discussed this book, consider it a "must read" even. Yet, I just heard about it this week, roughly 10 years later. Have they acted? No. Have they encouraged the American ppl to prepare? No.
The average American lives 3 days to hunger. What would you do to protect your family from those who would kill them to feed their own family?
Most people say "Anything!!"
But they won't store rice, beans, oats....they don't own a water filter or know how to build one.
You'd steal and kill ... but you won't prepare.

And I'm the weird one.
READ THIS BOOK.
Then read Lucifer's Hammer.

Then DO SOMETHING!

One of the most eye opening and terrifying books about something that COULD very well happen in our day.
I dont think people truly realize our reliance on power and its affect it was taken away. Tell me do you have enough medication to last more than one month? Do you have enough food to last if you cant get to a store, of if the store is out and wont be restocked? Do you know how to grow your own vege garden? Obtain water from a creek and boil it? Do you know how to hunt, fish, protect yourself in times of danger?
Even if you live in a great neighborhood and know your neighbors and friends well, do you know how they would react in a dire emergency?
I want to think that we would take care of each other, but one never knows what we as humans will do when faced with true hunger.
I would suggest and EMPHASIZE that everyone have a plan. North Korea is a larger danger than people realize. You dont want to be caught with your pants down. Plan now.

This book is as disturbing as "The Road." In "The Road" you are aware of a catastrophe, but it's abstract. You know something bad happened nuclearwise because of the aftermath. In this novel, however, the author tells you what happened, how easy it was to do, and that it could become factual and that makes it terrifying. What the author also makes perfectly clear is that our Congress is doing nothing to prevent this calamity. Imagine our country with no electricity, communication, food, medicine, or electronics. That's where the horror begins.
