This charming British animated short film (it's just 23 minutes long) is a 1982 production of London's Channel 4, based on the classic children's book by Raymond Briggs and crafted with a colored-pencils-on-paper look, like fluffy, hand-drawn illustrations. Small children should be entranced by the story of a small boy in rural England whose lovingly constructed snowman comes to life and takes him flying over the white-blanketed landscapes, in a beautiful rotoscoped (traced) sequence based on live-action flying footage. Part of the charm of the film is the gentle, everyday quality of its fantasy adventures: the snowman is invited in to try on clothes and play with the Christmas decorations, then plays host to the boy at a party in the woods, at which his snowy relatives do English country dances. This is one of the very few Christmas tapes on the market that really deserves to be a holiday perennial, a gentle fable of friendship and the power of imagination. --David Chute

Father Christmas
This irreverent Santa breaks from tradition in many ways. He has no Mrs., owns only four reindeer, and decides to convert his sleigh into an airborne motor home for a pre-Christmas vacation. He finds France too snooty, Scotland too cold, and Las Vegas just right. Tanned and rested, he returns to the North Pole in time to sort through the mail, pack up the toys, and hit the skies. Like the Santa of the Raymond Briggs book on which this 24-minute video is loosely based, he narrates his own story (splendidly voiced by Los Angeles stage actor William Dennis Hunt). But fans of the 1973 book will find the animated version far less cranky than the original. Although the book was aimed at ages 4-8, the video may have a wider appeal, depending on how you feel about the children seeing Santa gambling at the casino tables, dreaming of bikini-clad babes, and suffering a bout of diarrhea. --Kimberly Heinrichs

To me The Snowman is a classic right up there with Charlie Brown's Christmas. The animation is unique and mesmerizingly beautiful. "Walking in The Air" is about as classic and beautiful a theme you would ever want in a Christmas special. The Snowman has become part of our yearly Christmas tradition in our family. Our children love it.

The second feature on this disk I found unfunny and hard to sit through. It's a throwaway to me. This DVD gets five stars just for The Snowman.

If you only buy one film ... The Snowman should be it!

Having read hundreds of film critiques on Amazon (and understanding, of course, that opinions are only relative to the viewer)I feel compelled to finlly share words of praise for what I believe to be the most wonderful children's and family film ever produced. There is only one film in our collection that is watched all year long and always raved about by all who see it (including adults). The grand babies can't wait to get to Nana & Papa just to see The Snowman (even in the dog days of summer!). This delightful film even provoked conversation about Aurora Borealis, which they all have now learned about at such a young age! Raymond Briggs brought magic to the book and just when you thought that could not get any better, it was made into a film. What is so magical about this film is that a child's imagination is set free to explore the animated illustrations and soothing music WITHOUT any distraction from narration. Even adults are captivated as they sit quietly holding little ones, who have long since stopped moving and chattering when this film comes on. Undoubtedly, I believe this to be the very best children's film available. No violence, no distasteful language, nothing objectionable. How could there be ... only glorious music and beautiful illustrations come to life in a childs imagination. Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, this is the sweetest film you'll see. Our 3-generation family gives this film 5 big stars!
P.S. We have watched the VHS version for years. Having not seen the new DVD version(which comes with the tag-along DVD) I cannot comment on the Father Christmas DVD. However, from all of the negative comments, it does not seem to be worth watching(?). However, for the price of this dual set - you can certainly toss Father Christmas if you don't like it and still be way ahead of the game with just the purchase of The Snowman (which I believe is now being offered on DVD for the first time ever!). What a shame it was not released as a single DVD. Hmmmm...maybe that was the only way to move Father Christmas?

THE SNOWMAN DOES NOT PLAY!

I had high hopes for this dvd, thinking there was something wrong with my earlier copy. I cannot play "The Snowman" which is the only reason I re-purchased the dvd. Well, I am unable to play "The Snowman" on this disc too. ...so disappointing. I saw "The Snowman" many years ago and it touched my heart. "Father Christmas" does not compare to it! If a person is looking for "The Snowman", I'd suggest you pass on this copy.

the snowman is superb but father christmas is a hollow remake

The snowman is a joy! The masterful artwork and beautiful music are emotionally moving. It is a Christmas must see on my holiday viewing list.

But now on to Father Christmas...

I originally owned both The Snowman and Father Christmas on video cassette. This version of Father Christmas is not the same. It has been tweaked and watered-down so as to "not offend" I suppose. But that was its charm. Father Christmas's vocabulary included the brash "bloody" this and that, and he was no teetotaler. In fact the final scene changed his own gift received from a good old uncle from a bottle of "spirits - to warm my spirits" to a bottle of "cologne - to make me smell good." Give me a break! Now was that change really necessary? If you can somehow see the original with its very human and lovable father chrismas you will be rewarded for holding on to your vcr.

mesmerizing for all ages

With the exception of only a very short introduction by the now adult man, this beautiful story from England is brought to life with the only sound,music,and the characters moving painted artwork rather than drawn as cartoons. The story is endearing and one song in a minor key is absolutely mesmerizing. I always recommend the movie to my piano students, and every single one wants to play "Walking in the Air".

We show it every single Christmas in our home, and our grandchildren can fill in their own words in the telling of this story.It is the first dvd your children should own.

We watched it for years on video format;now that the dvd is out, it includes a second story by the same author/composer of Santa's visits to foreign lands off season. There is plenty of humor!I enjoyed explaining the customs of each country to my 9 year old grandson as we watched it together.
