- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2024Standout performances all-around, especially by Kathy Bates, Travolta, Hagman and especially Billy Bob Thornton as (we all know it's true) James Carville. I think Travolta caputured the smart-and-incredible-charisma-but-kinda-creepy essence of Clinton very well indeed. Emma Thompson is a favorite of mine, but in this case it felt a little forced... Maybe she was giving too much to the accent vs. the acting?
When it came out, the fact it's a thinly-veiled bio of the Clintons overshadowed all else. But now that's faded, it's a great flick, good story, and still lots of relevant insight into American politics.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2024Goofy but good movie of Bill Clinton. Depiction of what a slimy politician he was/is.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2016What a commentary on political trickery and using people! Watching this movie along with the drama in the current election was most revealing. I do hope that the extent to which the characters went in this book is NOT indicative of what really goes on in today's political world. In this work, the author introduces us to some unforgettable characters. Of course, there is the nominee campaigning for the office of the President of the US and his longsuffering partner/wife who is capable of some pretty good political shenanigans herself. The "good guy" is a young man fresh out of law school and eager to do something good in the world. Thinking that he is going to be working with less fortunate people in the south, helping them to register to vote as well as improve their lot in life, he meets the presidential candidate and is immediately swept into the non-stop chaos that is campaigning. When he seems some of the things going on, his better self is shocked and he tries to leave the staff of the candidate only to be brought back by new assignments which he learns are on the shady side at best. Before long, he finds himself totally immersed in the less favorable side of the campaign and aligned closely with the group of people who are the "insiders." Things go from bad to worse and result in one opponent suffering a serious heart attack, another killing himself, and many other lives destroyed on the way to the White House. The turning point occurs when one of the candidate's life-long friend reports to the young man a dastardly deed of the candidate and demanding comeuppance. At that point the young man knows that to preserve himself and his convictions about helping others, he must leave; but this is not to be. Instead, he is involved even further culminating in election day and its celebrations afterward. This work is a revealing commentary on what can happen when the zeal of youth is tempted to reach for the stars without true conviction but enamored by the rewards and the money. The come away is that we must be true to ourselves and determine to follow through on making the world a better place.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2024What a terrific satire on the absurdity of politics. Perfect counterpoint to todays nonsense. Travolta is at his absolute best in this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2019Unless you saw Frontline's two shows on the life of Bill Clinton then you probably have no idea who he really was or how hard he worked to make our lives better, better than we deserve. Our economy was better under Clinton than any president after him. You'll have to Google that information because they won't let me provide a link.
Yes, he was human, but he genuinely wanted to do good and we vilified him for it like we do all genuinely good people who don't keep a low profile (or we just kill them, like John Lennon, the Kennedys, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, etcetera). Why is it that we don't seem to have a problem with the crooks in high places, is it because we identify more with dishonest people and compare poorly to the honest ones, or because we wish we had what they have no matter how ill-gotten it is?
This movie shows how hard it is for anybody to get into office whether they're good or not; how you have to play hardball if you really want to make it. Yes, it has some funny parts, as does life, but it's not really a comedy.
