Building PowerPointTemplates

Supercharge your PowerPoint® presentations

with custom templates and themes!

Want to create presentations that are more consistent and cost-effective? Presentations that fully reflect your branding? Then don’t settle for Microsoft’s “out-of-the-box” templates and themes: create your own! In this easy, hands-on guide, two PowerPoint MVPs teach you every skill and technique you’ll need to build the perfect template–from planning and design, through theme building, custom layouts, colors, and deployment.

Echo Swinford and Julie Terberg have distilled their immense PowerPoint knowledge into simple, step-by-step techniques you can use right now, whether you’re using PowerPoint 2010 or 2007 for Windows, or PowerPoint 2011 for Mac. Well-built templates are the backbone of great presentations—whether building them for your own use or designing for thousands of users, this book will guide you through the process of creating the most effective templates.

Important Note: Upgrading from older versions of PowerPoint, such as PowerPoint 2003? Your old templates may no longer work. This book will help you make the transition painlessly!

• Plan new templates and themes to maximize their business value for years to come

• Understand the differences between templates and themes, and how they work together

• Make better choices about color, fonts, and slide layouts

• Create efficient templates for individual users, teams, and large organizations

• Incorporate Notes and Handout Masters into your presentation templates

• Provide example slides and default settings that lead to better presentations

• Use Microsoft’s little-known Theme Builder to create effects and background styles

• Work around hidden quirks in PowerPoint’s advanced template and theme features

Very thorough. You can tell the authors are quite knowledgeable about PowerPoint.

This is a great, easy to read book about templates. The only thing I think is lacking is maybe a teaser on how you can take your templates up another level with the use of XML, VBA, and AddIns. For that I REALLY leaned on Advanced Office Documents 2007 Inside Out by Stephanie Krieger. This book will let you "max out" Microsoft PowerPoint though and what is currently built into the system. It also has great explanations, visuals, and checklists for when you finally get to the point where you are creating your template.

Thanks to Echo Swinford and Julie Terberg for sharing their expertise on this subject. I have developed hundreds of PowerPoint templates and I still discovered new helpful tips in this book. The step-by-step summary at the end is a great reference. Unfortunately many people create what they call "templates" but in fact they do not have the knowledge and skills to make a template work correctly, therefore the templates are more frustrating than helpful for users. I see this most often in templates created by Mac-based graphic designers and ad agencies. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is charged with creating PowerPoint templates for their employer or clients.

Hard-earned knowledge: you can't just jump into an existing PowerPoint template, make your changes, and expect that it will work reliably for users with different operating systems, different versions of PowerPoint, and different skill levels. This short book explains why.

If you're a manager, this book gives you arguments to make for funding some true MS Office expertise.

If you're a PowerPoint user, this book shows you exactly -- exactly -- what to do to make your presentation templates bulletproof.

Highly recommended.

It is a good book. It shows you how much PowerPoint sucks.

- which is not what you get using MS help!
Anyone trying to standardise their companies slide decks, in particular those used training courses should buy this.

Saving a PowerPoint file as a template is easy. That's where the "easy" stops, though.

Creating templates that work well across different versions of PowerPoint, on Mac and PC and even between different computers running the same software is another matter altogether. It can be a complex puzzle, but with the right knowledge, you can solve it.

Where do you find that knowledge? This book. Laid out logically, simply, clearly and beautifully.

Where else can you find the same knowledge? Nowhere.

If you're creating templates for other people to use, this is your bible. The gold standard. So good that I bought the Kindle version so I could have it handy on my PC/iPad/iPhone when I'm away from the office. (The Kindle version, by the way, is one of the best examples of a computer book I've ever seen on the Kindle).

Update: This one sold out, but the authors have updated it in a new version. Still the one and only go-to if you want to do templates and themes right.

And now Julie Terberg and Echo Swinford are sharing their secrets with you. Whether you're just starting out or are a power user, Building PowerPoint Templates is a must have in every professional's library.

What I particularly like are the many practical and detailed suggestions for good templates based on years of experience of the authors. It's not easy to find this type of information. I wish they would do the same for other aspects of PowerPoint.
