this is a great read. I wanted to read stories about wildlife

If you are interested in the history and rules/laws of the park and national forests, this is a great read. I wanted to read stories about wildlife, visitor encounters, etc. Most of what I read (I read about 3/4 of the book and gave up) was about the hunting outfitters and their abuse of the area and how the park and forests don't stand up to them because they have a lot of clout for economic reasons.

This is a fine book to include in the broad category of "American nature writing." It centers on the writer's experience living and working in a particularly secluded part of Yellowstone. The biggest surprise, for me, was the rather disturbing presence of outfitters and their clients in those supposedly pristine areas. Their sometimes unethical practices clearly troubled the writer.

Great book. Well written with interesting and very well composed story line. I learned a great deal from this book that I will take with me always. The author was somewhat judgmental concerning Ourfitters and Guides, but that comes with his job I suppose.

Gary Ferguson writes a sweet description of the area, but his facts are not completely accurate.
He writes about people from second hand sources without interviewing the primary sources. This is not a good literary documentary technique.
