When a Nation Forgets God: 7 Lessons We Must Learn from Nazi Germany Paperback – January 1, 2010

4.8 out of 5 stars 1,033 ratings

This excellent book is so important. It clearly and powerfully explains what the parallels are between Germany's fall from grace and the beginning of our own fall. - Eric Metaxas, author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy

In When A Nation Forgets God, Erwin Lutzer studies seven similarities between Nazi Germany and America today—some of them chilling—and cautions us to respond accordingly. Engaging, well-researched, and easy to understand, Lutzer’s writing is that of a realist, one alarmed but unafraid. Amidst describing the messes of our nation’s government, economy, legal pitfalls, propaganda, and more, Lutzer points to the God who always has a plan.

At the beginning of the twentieth Century, Nazi Germany didn’t look like a country on the brink of world-shaking terrors. It looked like America today. When a Nation Forgets God uses history to warn us of a future that none of us wants to see. It urges us to be ordinary heroes who speak up and take action.

ON THE COVER:

“Using the history of Nazi Germany as his canvas, Lutzer brilliantly illustrates a critically important truth.”

Frank Wright, Ph.D.

INSIDE OF BOOK:

“Woodrow Wilson once spoke of the futility of a nation that forgets its heritage.  Erwin Lutzer asks a far more penetrating question: What happens to the nation that forgets God?  Using the history of Nazi Germany as his canvas, Lutzer brilliantly illustrates a critically important truth.  Just as nature abhors a vacuum, a culture which drives every vestige of God from the marketplace of ideas inevitably finds it has sown seeds that it will reap in the whirlwind.”

Chilling. Currently and Historically Accurate

Chilling. Currently and Historically Accurate
Lutzer lays history over current events and the topography matches. A warning written in 2016, this book turns out to be prophetically accurate. This book is beyond politics, it is a call to Christians to stand.

I am a homeschool Mum of 4 children, and didn't realize that this book would give me the inspiration to keep on keeping on, and leave the yellow school bus alone. This book uncovers the subtle lies the enemy has buried in the Western world that have made so many of us apathetic and looking just like the world. I know I get weary in having my children constantly being different, and my heart breaks as I see Christian parents letting large youth groups and programs be the spiritual discipleship of our children, instead of being the personal example and teaching them as it is our God given role. Another book a few years ago that changed our family was Tortured for Christ by Richard Wurmbrand. This book goes hand in hand with Wurmbrand's suffering for Christ, and the reminder that it is a part of every Christians life. I plan on purchasing this book for other friends that have made it their passion to politically debate anyone on the right, in the name of all the things the right has done to distort the gospel. Lutzer does an excellent job taking out political agendas from this book and challenging us as believers, first of all personally. If our own lives aren't on fire for the Lord and our walk with Him is off we will be completely ineffective. I was challenged by the research mentioned on successful Christians....success in terms of changing lives and being a difference, not in terms of health and wealth.
    1) Know the power of prayer and fasting. 2)Can recite large portions of Scripture and hymns.
3)Count it an honor to suffer for Christ's sake 4) know that suffering is normal, it is one of God's gifts He gives the churches.
If we as Christians alone, made the first one a goal, asking God to tranform our hearts, families would be changed, along with churches and communities. My heart is reignited, for these are the things I want to dilitgently work at and pass down to my girls. In our family if Christ and His word aren't imminent over everything else, we will just mix in to popular Christianity. Bonhoeffer's description of cheap grace in Germany just before the rise of Hitler hit home in a not so comfortable way, but we are to be iron sharpening iron.

Thank you Dr. Lutzer for this book that crosses polital lines, and points to the heart of the gospel. My heart must change, before anything else can happen. The choice to let God reign surpreme in my life allows Him to unleash His work in everything my life than touches.

I found this book captivating , interesting and very enlightening. This book illustrates very well what happens when a moral vacuum is created, it is generally filled by one that is the opposite of what was replaced. We are presently reaping the fruits of this same type of situation in the United States. So many amazing insights in such a small book. Do you want to understand what is happening in the government and media sponsored shooting galleries called schools? Consider the following excerpt from the book.

"This new Reich will give its youth to no one, but will itself take youth and give to youth
its own education and its own upbringing." "Hitler believed quite rightly, that he who controls
the youth controls the future. Parents, he insisted, needed to understand the limits of their
responsibility; and if they cooperate, all would be well, if not, the law was on Hitler's side! In
effect, what Hitler said was that the parents had the responsibility of raising the child's body,
but the Reich would educate the child's soul."

For years I have been telling people that we were being regressed to a level below that of animals. Humans have the ability to reason which animals do not. This book states things that I have come to understand in a very clear and understandable manner. Very thought provoking with excellent historical connections. This is a book everyone would be advised to read and consider the message contained within.

Here's an easy quick read. Yet it contains parallels with Nazi Germany that cause one to ponder. The author seems to avoid too glib comparisons. Consider these statements from the book:

    * There was not enough room in the churches for both the cross and the swastika.
    * Hitler always said that the best way to conquer your enemies is to divide them.
    * The Greater Good of Germany eclipsed individual freedoms and the right to opposition.
    * The future of America will not ultimately rest on politicians.
    * As long as the economy was strong, people didn't care whether they had freedom of speech, freedom of travel, or freedom of elections.
    * Given a choice most people will choose bread and sausage above individual liberties.
    * Treason was defined as anything that was contrary to the will and the purpose of the Reich.
    * He knew how to tap into the anger of the German people.
    * The second task of propaganda is the disruption of the existing state of affairs.
    * Before we know it we are in a world where facts do not matter.
    * Warning signs were overlooked because of this passion of people to believe.
    * The strategy is a combination of both lies and intimidation.
    * Remember that emotions are more powerful than rational arguments. In short simply demonize the opposition.
    * When the cross is wrapped in the flag of a political party, it is always distorted or diminished.

This book was published in 2016. But it seems more timely than ever.
