In this first full-length biography of Benjamin Mays (1894-1984), Randal Maurice Jelks chronicles the life of the man Martin Luther King Jr. called his "spiritual and intellectual father." Dean of the Howard University School of Religion, president of Morehouse College, and mentor to influential black leaders, Mays had a profound impact on the education of the leadership of the black church and of a generation of activists, policymakers, and educators. This book is a bit too theoretical and philosophical for me. I would like to see a more historical tapestry of the great schoolmaster's personality and life (outside his head), yet I did learn a lot about Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays which makes me respect him even more.

Since I was an undercover gay student during the rebellious 60's it is interesting to read about Dr. Mays' attitude about homosexuality. Wish I had had the courage to discuss my anguish with "Bucky Bennie" during daily compulsory chapel where social issues were often discussed.
