Much of the New Testament was written in urban settings, in which the Christian communities had to deal head-on with issues such as race, equality, justice, sexuality, money, and economics. Christopher W. Brooks, Dean of Moody Theological Seminary (Plymouth, Michigan), is a pastor, popular radio host, and apologetics speaker. With a master’s in Christian apologetics and philosophy from Biola University and graduate studies at the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics at Oxford University, Brooks is a Kern Fellow of the Acton Institute and serves in the Urban Outreach of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries. He has led international leadership training in twelve countries and speaks to the practical issues of the Christian faith through his Monday to Friday drive-time radio program “Equipped for Life” in the greater Detroit area. Urban Apologetics

This book can address the scholar to the laymember. It's approach is to inform the Christian body that there is warfare going on in the inner-city. Besides what we typically think of sex, drugs violence and hip-hop. In the barbershop, the block, on the porch, in the hood, they are being disclipled by various religions right next door to the inner city church. The average Christian will never know or confront any of these issues due to the fact they haven't stepped outside the doors of the church to engage with the cultural. I admit it was me, but these conversations at the barbershop with the Hebrew isrealites have pushed me to find answers. My barber was converted instantly and so we have been having discussions sometimes over 2 hrs over our faith. I had to stop and focus on the other brothers in the shop to get them to know Christ. I hope the author and others will come together to find ways to educate the inner city churches to help them become equipped for the battle.

As an apologist myself I constantly see Christians attacked for serving a white, slave master God; which is clearly not the case. This stresses the importance that being a Christian is not a spectator sport! Education is a must and this book clearly stresses that. I love the fact that there are links and names to follow for future studies. This book is an excellent primer for those wanting to take an active role in combating the prevailing worldviews coming against the Kingdom of God.

I'm hoping for a newer edition with a larger section dealing with the changing landscape of ideas against those of the Gospel of Christ i.e. kemetic doctrine and Hebrew Israelite theology. These two particular groups at large are taking social media by storm and the church needs to take an active role in training and equipping the laity to deal with it at the ground level.

The time for the "you need to talk to my pastor" approach to apologetics is long gone and with the advent of the information age -- fake news and endless memes attacking the church not going anywhere for a while, we need to be ready to do battle against ignorance and false information at a moment's notice.

Urban Apologetics brings into sharp context two perspectives, urban community, and apologetics, that are often discussed and addressed separately. This is a great resource that hones on this unique dynamic that is often not given it's fair treatment. Having followed apologetics for sometime, and as a black/Hispanic minority, this treatment presents 'the other side' of apologetics in light of our social view. The academic depth is impressive and grants a degree of authority that goes way beyond personal commentary and experiences to present a well rounded, informed, and pragmatic analysis, yet easy to consume and not overwhelming to digest. A must read for all Jesus followers and especially those in any leadership capacity, inside and outside of the ministry.
