About the Author

Michael S. Greve is a professor at George Mason University School of Law. From 2000 to August 2012, he was the John G. Searle Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, where he remains a visiting scholar. Before coming to AEI, Greve cofounded and, from 1989 to 2000, directed the Center for Individual Rights, a public interest law firm. Currently, he also chairs the board of the Competitive Enterprise Institute and is a frequent contributor to the Liberty Law Blog.

A great summary of our Constitution in its historical context

A very good short history of our constitution and easy to read. No excessive details, but enough so that you know all the sides of an issue or process. The author describes the tradeoffs involved, the critical timing of the document, and the efforts to make a constitution that would be long-lasting and adaptable as opposed to a long "laws list" that would soon be discarded. I was amazed to learn that many constitutions last fewer than 20 years. I have greater respect for our Founding Fathers and would hope that current politicians could do as well. The book avoids current politics and does not crusade for any cause.

Having a copy of the US Constitution helps me remember some of the "rights" that have been trampled under foot. Moreover, it clearly dispels and renders BOGUS some of the claims from "leftist" propaganda. 2nd amendment, right to bear armes. FYI, is to sustain a militia, not individuals, and that organization is a states right, as well as Federal. Other parts seem less vague, but when put in contrext of the time and place that they were written, it becomes clearer. EVERYONE should know and defend the USC. It appears schools no longer teach Social Studies, or related subjects, since, as my grandson said, "we don't need that stuff, we have computers or smart phones..." Shame on us.

Three of my grandparents immigrated to this country from Wales. They would not teach the Welsh language to their large families because they wanted them to appreciate the opportunity, hope and happiness our country offered. Everyone should be reading this and the many good history's the pioneers went through in establishing this nation.
