Crossing the Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil Paperback – September 15, 2004
Purchase options and add-ons
The acclaimed investigative reporter and author of Confronting Collapse examines the global forces that led to 9/11 in this provocative exposé.
The attacks of September 11, 2001 were accomplished through an amazing orchestration of logistics and personnel. Crossing the Rubicon examines how such a conspiracy was possible through an interdisciplinary analysis of petroleum, geopolitics, narco-traffic, intelligence and militarism―without which 9/11 cannot be understood.
In reality, 9/11 and the resulting "War on Terror" are parts of a massive authoritarian response to an emerging economic crisis of unprecedented scale. Peak Oil―the beginning of the end for our industrial civilization―is driving the elites of American power to implement unthinkably draconian measures of repression, warfare and population control. Crossing the Rubicon is more than a story of corruption and greed. It is a map of the perilous terrain through which we are all now making our way.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2013Mr. Ruppert went to great lengths to present the evidence, thoroughly footnoted, that the 'official' story regarding the horrendous events of 9/11 was just that, a story or more accurately a self serving fable. He presents the evidence in the same way it would be presented to a court of law and doesn't meander into the what ifs or other claims for which there is either no evidence or what was evidence was quickly removed and/or contaminated making pursuit and documentation of both chain of custody as well as a legal investigation literally impossible.
So he sticks to what can be proven and for that reason alone this book should be considered required reading. I gave the book five stars for this very reason.
As a former law enforcement officer Mr. Ruppert is well versed in the trade craft of putting together a case that will withstand the scrutiny of a court proceeding.
We are now approaching a full twelve years since the horrible day in September 2001. Contaminated or missing evidence, over a decade of wars unrelated in the extreme to the events of 9/11, the deaths of victims of that day, the first responders who, if still alive, are suffering from horrible illnesses due directly to their role in the rescue efforts for which compensation is still being refused (unforgivable), deaths of witnesses, deaths and/or horrible injuries as a direct result of the two unrelated wars (to 9/11), the brushing aside of professional fire and explosive experts along with their governing document NFPA 921 while replacing these experts with people with zero experience in such investigations (ie NIST/FEMA) and a multitude of other crimes makes it, in my humble opinion, a must to read the accounting of the event document in Crossing the Rubicon.
I know there will be those that disagree but quite frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2022Crossing the Rubicon by Michael Ruppert is an exceptionally important book. It lays bare the brutish and ugly truth about how world governments and corporations actually function. The title is derived from an event in ancient Roman history: When Julius Caesar was governor of an area north of Rome, he was ordered to disband his army and return to the city. Rather than disband, he marched to the Rubicon River, crossed the river with his army, and precipitated a civil war. That was the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of Empire. It's precisely what has happened in this country: The Republic is gone; only an empire stands in its place. The Rubicon represents the point of no return. The book offers in great detail, the events of 9/11 and the reasons why these events occurred. It offers explanations in the same concise and informative manner that L. Fletcher Prouty's book on the JFK assassination did. Mr. Ruppert includes an especially critical chapter on biowarfare and vaccines that, alone, makes the book worth reading. If Ruppert hadn't "committed suicide" he would have been a very active and vocal critic of the Covid-19 debacle and the intentions behind the biowarfare facilities that litter the planet. He also would have been quick to make the connection between new infectious diseases and the mechanisms of geoengineering.

Prior to reading Crossing the Rubicon, I had heard that Michael Ruppert is a conspiracy theorist/maniac. After reading the book, I can see why some might feel that way, although I will say that I am not one of them. I'm not sure what to make of Ruppert's claims or his beliefs, but I don't think he is a nutcase. What I do think is that he has gone through great pains in structuring a text which clearly maps out the Bush/Cheney agenda. I have a few problems with the basics of the book, but overall, Ruppert has succeeded in scaring me. I've always believed that Bush is up to no good, and I've always thought it is possible that Bush is involved in the 9/11 disaster, but I've never been convinced of it. I'm still not convinced, but I'm closer than I've ever been. I will say that the sub-title is confusing and doesn't actually relate to the meat and potatoes of the text. This book isn't about the decline of the American Empire at the end of the age of oil, it is about the Bush/Cheney agenda and the available evidence of their involvement in it. The title should have something to do with the overall substance of the book, and in this case, it is misleading. Given what Ruppert says about the CIA, Bush, Cheney, and others, I'm surprised he's alive.
I would not go so far as to say that all of the evidence presented in Crossing the Rubicon is credible or convincing, but much of it is. On the other hand, much of the evidence is merely circumstantial, and we all know that many innocent people are in jail because of circumstantial evidence. However, Ruppert does make a convincing case that Dick Cheney is the closet leader of the U.S., and that Cheney and his company, Halliburton, are profiting from 9/11. The thing I'm stuck with is that if even half or a fourth of the information provided is true, the U.S. is in for a huge surprise in the not too distant future, and it isn't good. The one thing I don't know is what can we do about it. Ruppert offers no solutions that I could ascertain.
What I wonder is why hasn't Michael Ruppert been on shows such as Larry King Live to promote his book? I don't watch the FOX Network for obvious reasons, and I understand that he has been on some of its programs, but I haven't seen him on what I would term as credible television programs, which aren't available on FOX. Nor have I ever heard of Ruppert prior to discovering his book.
As for the comments I have read about the editing of this book, I agree. It is a huge book with much information, and one would think that a professional publisher would have done a better job editing the manuscript. Crossing the Rubicon is fraught with grammatical errors, redundancies, and duplications. On the other hand, so what. It's the substance of the information that is important, not the presentation. Also, the book is conveniently priced. At $15, on Amazon, I found it to be a bargain, and I bought copies for my interested friends. My basic theory is this, a man (or woman) doesn't go through the trouble of putting together a book such as Crossing the Rubicon and then sell it for a mere $15. He must have an agenda, and I believe Michael Ruppert's agenda is in the best interests of the United States. READ THIS BOOK.
