Crossing the Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil Paperback – September 15, 2004
Purchase options and add-ons
The acclaimed investigative reporter and author of Confronting Collapse examines the global forces that led to 9/11 in this provocative exposé.
The attacks of September 11, 2001 were accomplished through an amazing orchestration of logistics and personnel. Crossing the Rubicon examines how such a conspiracy was possible through an interdisciplinary analysis of petroleum, geopolitics, narco-traffic, intelligence and militarism―without which 9/11 cannot be understood.
In reality, 9/11 and the resulting "War on Terror" are parts of a massive authoritarian response to an emerging economic crisis of unprecedented scale. Peak Oil―the beginning of the end for our industrial civilization―is driving the elites of American power to implement unthinkably draconian measures of repression, warfare and population control. Crossing the Rubicon is more than a story of corruption and greed. It is a map of the perilous terrain through which we are all now making our way.

"Astounding! Alarming! ... And yet at last, with this -- Mike Ruppert's beyond-courageous offering -- we gain sight of the whole of corporate-managed, government-assisted, bank-laundered, drug-funded plunder. And a jolt to spur our movements to take back the world."
- Chellis Glendinning, PhD, author of Chiva: A Village Takes on the Global Heroin Trade and Off the Map: An Expedition Deep into Empire and the Global Economy
"Mike Ruppert was one of the first journalists to understand the concept and importance of Peak Oil. What is more important, he has connected the dots: he understands the relationships between this historic watershed and the geopolitical events of our time. Mike still has the instincts of a cop (which he once was), but the criminals he is tracking these days are no small-time hoodlums; they are some of the most powerful people on the planet. If you want to understand the dynamics of the oil-money-drugs-and-war imperial system in which we are all embedded, start with this book."
- Richard Heinberg, author of The Party's Over and Powerdown
"Mike Ruppert represents, from top to bottom, the best tradition of an independent thinking, open-minded, uncorrupt able, humorous, prudent, American Cop. After running during his police career into conflicts with the drug dealing part of the CIA, Mike knows that government information seldom equals its disinformation. The doubt about the official 9/11 story brought us together. From the first day after 9/11, I could follow his scouting into the real world behind government propaganda. I firmly believe at the end of three years of conducting a really independent investigation, that Ruppert is not only heading in the right direction, but also touching the inner sanctum of the hidden government agenda."
- Andreas Von Bulow, former German Cabinet Minister and Parliamentary Secretary, author of The CIA and September 11
"Fasten your thinking caps! Something is clearly terribly wrong at the heart of American politics. The same is true of the mainstream media. Reporters just aren't asking enough difficult and dangerous questions. Michael Ruppert has been asking disconcerting but critical questions for more than two decades, even when it meant confronting unpleasant truths that challenge the very basis of industrial society. His unflinching reporting on the facts behind the coming decline of global petroleum has been an extraordinary service to the world. Whatever you think of Ruppert's bold hypotheses about the geopolitics of oil, this provocative book will force you to confront the contradictions of our increasingly unsustainable global economy."
- Julian Darley, author of High Noon for Natural Gas: The New Energy Crisis , founder and director of The Post Carbon Institute, and founder of www.globalpublicmedia.com
"I'm proud Mike asked me to appear in his seminal film, The Truth and Lies of 9/11. Mike has traveled and studied the Peak Oil issue with world renowned experts, and he and I share an abiding shock at the rampant despoilment of our planet, through fake stoked resource wars that have real consequences in real lives. Mike has something to say and I'm going to listen."

"Mike Ruppert's work should be a household item for any American Muslim, Jew or Christian looking to understand the difference between authentic religious piety versus the criminality that occupies much of the headlines these days. He brings this home for every American by exposing the perpetrators here within our own government, most notably using 9-11 as a paradigm. All folk of religion must have the courage to expose the agendas that use 'religion' as a guise, be these agendas in the name of 'Islamic resurgence' or 'Securing the Jewish State.' Kudos to Mike, one of the last of the true-blooded Americans around."
― Faiz Khan M.D., Triage Emergency Physician on 9-11, Assistant Imam, New York
"In a sector rife with disinformation and ill-informed comment, Michael Ruppert's work stands out as a conspicuous beacon of valuable well-informed analysis. His claims are bold and contrarian and have dramatic implications for the global oil price should the global economy experience a sustained recovery while Iraqi oil supplies are curtailed. Ruppert believes (with ample documentation to justify his view) that depletion dynamics will fuel energy price appreciation more in this cycle than any prior one. If he is anywhere near correct, as we believe, the oil market will begin an historic cyclical upmove with a tighter supply demand balance than at any prior cycle. For anyone wishing to understand the full ramifications of this for the energy markets and global economy, Ruppert's work is invaluable."

So he sticks to what can be proven and for that reason alone this book should be considered required reading. I gave the book five stars for this very reason.
As a former law enforcement officer Mr. Ruppert is well versed in the trade craft of putting together a case that will withstand the scrutiny of a court proceeding.
We are now approaching a full twelve years since the horrible day in September 2001. Contaminated or missing evidence, over a decade of wars unrelated in the extreme to the events of 9/11, the deaths of victims of that day, the first responders who, if still alive, are suffering from horrible illnesses due directly to their role in the rescue efforts for which compensation is still being refused (unforgivable), deaths of witnesses, deaths and/or horrible injuries as a direct result of the two unrelated wars (to 9/11), the brushing aside of professional fire and explosive experts along with their governing document NFPA 921 while replacing these experts with people with zero experience in such investigations (ie NIST/FEMA) and a multitude of other crimes makes it, in my humble opinion, a must to read the accounting of the event document in Crossing the Rubicon.
I know there will be those that disagree but quite frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.
Prior to reading Crossing the Rubicon, I had heard that Michael Ruppert is a conspiracy theorist/maniac. After reading the book, I can see why some might feel that way, although I will say that I am not one of them. I'm not sure what to make of Ruppert's claims or his beliefs, but I don't think he is a nutcase. What I do think is that he has gone through great pains in structuring a text which clearly maps out the Bush/Cheney agenda. I have a few problems with the basics of the book, but overall, Ruppert has succeeded in scaring me. I've always believed that Bush is up to no good, and I've always thought it is possible that Bush is involved in the 9/11 disaster, but I've never been convinced of it. I'm still not convinced, but I'm closer than I've ever been. I will say that the sub-title is confusing and doesn't actually relate to the meat and potatoes of the text. This book isn't about the decline of the American Empire at the end of the age of oil, it is about the Bush/Cheney agenda and the available evidence of their involvement in it. The title should have something to do with the overall substance of the book, and in this case, it is misleading. Given what Ruppert says about the CIA, Bush, Cheney, and others, I'm surprised he's alive.
I would not go so far as to say that all of the evidence presented in Crossing the Rubicon is credible or convincing, but much of it is. On the other hand, much of the evidence is merely circumstantial, and we all know that many innocent people are in jail because of circumstantial evidence. However, Ruppert does make a convincing case that Dick Cheney is the closet leader of the U.S., and that Cheney and his company, Halliburton, are profiting from 9/11. The thing I'm stuck with is that if even half or a fourth of the information provided is true, the U.S. is in for a huge surprise in the not too distant future, and it isn't good. The one thing I don't know is what can we do about it. Ruppert offers no solutions that I could ascertain.
What I wonder is why hasn't Michael Ruppert been on shows such as Larry King Live to promote his book? I don't watch the FOX Network for obvious reasons, and I understand that he has been on some of its programs, but I haven't seen him on what I would term as credible television programs, which aren't available on FOX. Nor have I ever heard of Ruppert prior to discovering his book.
As for the comments I have read about the editing of this book, I agree. It is a huge book with much information, and one would think that a professional publisher would have done a better job editing the manuscript. Crossing the Rubicon is fraught with grammatical errors, redundancies, and duplications. On the other hand, so what. It's the substance of the information that is important, not the presentation. Also, the book is conveniently priced. At $15, on Amazon, I found it to be a bargain, and I bought copies for my interested friends. My basic theory is this, a man (or woman) doesn't go through the trouble of putting together a book such as Crossing the Rubicon and then sell it for a mere $15. He must have an agenda, and I believe Michael Ruppert's agenda is in the best interests of the United States. READ THIS BOOK.

This book is about the connections between the oil industry, the war machine, 9/11, illicit drugs trade and their connection with our politicians and the big banks who launder and steal unimaginable sums of money. The CIA are at the heart of it all. The connections are explained logically. It makes sense of a terrible world where corporate and big government crimes are ignored, of the unjust laws propagated on society over drug taking, which ultimately fuels and makes rich the big oil giants and the drug lords, all working in cahoots with one another.
We can see the connections of the banking system and our politicians in here. If anyone is looking for clarification on the current 'conspiracy theories', then this book is for you. Even if you are not, the truth is written in these pages by a brilliant investigative journalist of the highest moral fibre and intelligence. Mike Ruppert recently died, and it was said he committed suicide. He got close to all the key players who have been causing trouble and corruption in this world. He spoke out using fact and data. He connected all the dots and spoke out, shared the info. he was the most skillful investigator. Coming from a specialist back ground with a passion for logic and evidence.
I am not going to give it away and spoil a rare treat. It reads brilliantly, and it is the real live truth of why our planet is in the mess it is today. He is telling us the facts as they are. The oil is running out, and where there is strife there is the last of the dwindling supplies of oil. The big families want control of it. USA is their fighting machine. Now I know why Nigeria is a hell hole today for the ordinary citizen, why illicit drugs are purer and more plentiful, who the real drug runners are, and why there are wars being possited in the middle east. It doesn't make sense in the ordinary sense of the word, for all these wars, but its about power and greed, to see who gets the last dwindling supplies of oil;.
He also explains why this precious and increasingly rare commodity is overpriced, and why greedy power crazy mad oil men are restricting the exploration and genius inventions that could provide 'free energy' as a replacement to the current oil gas and coal, which will run out very soon. This would seem to most of us, to make sense....get some infrastructure before the oil dries up forever.
We have been living in the lap of luxury by draining mother earths blood from her mantle, and now it is almost gone. There is control of our media through the mainstream and it is controlled and regulated away from the reality. Now our reality is so deluded and out of kilter with the truth, we are in cloud cuckoo land. They hide from us the coming truth, because they fear for themselves, and well they might. Yet with reasonable forward planning and co-operation with decent people, we could be living in utopia. If the world is brought down, it is by the minds of greed and excess. We need to wake up to the truth of what Mike Ruppert is telling us. He had no vested interests. I had never heard of him till recently. I seriously suggest to buy this book or kindle book before it is supressed.
Mike is dead now. We have lost a treasure. We need to ask ourselves some serious questions. Do some serious soul searcging about our part in this, and step back. We live in a plastic world, and cannot imagine living without the plastics that oil has made, yet we will have to. Soon plastic will become rarer than platinum. Imagine living in a world without plastic. No cars, no TV no PC no mobile phones, no washing machines, the list is endless. Hemp can replace it, but it has been banned. Why? Cant make vast sums of money or control it, as we have to grow it. Why are Americans being banned from growing food? We have the power to put our interests where they will be best for humanity, and not to allow ourselves to be bought off by these sick people with their fake money and power. They only have these things, because we assent to their reality as 'the way things are'. It's time to wake up and challenge this veiw.
Who really had the right to to use this commodity of oil, and why did a handful of so called 'aristocrats' steal our oil, and get rich off it, sent our loved ones to war over it.....when we could have shared, and no one person or group of persons would get rich off what belongs to every living being on planet earth. Everyones, not a handful of fly boys belongings. They are destroying everyones environment for the greed of it. With wars, illicit drugs trade, limited oil supplies, bad farming greed, which poisons people so they need pharmaceutical cures owned by the Rockefellers. Beezness eez beezness and profits are profits. No profit = ban it. There are a small number of people getting rich off our labour, suffering and loss.
They are not using this time wisely to develop infrastructure for the alternatives, when the black stuff runs out. Such as hemp, and renewables, and so many other genius discoveries being buried each day by the corporate control freaks. They ARE freaks. Prepared to kill millions so they can dominate and have what is essentially everyones. I regard myself as fortunate to have experienced life with oil, and I am now prepared to accept life without it. It would have been nice to have been able to develop something to replace it, but that has been supressed by those who consider themselves lords and masters of our planet. And we have been blinded to it and allowed ourselves to feel powerless to stop this. We must stop it now, even if it is too late. We need to salvge our human dignity before it is completely removed from us.
Read this book. Also mike has done some youtube documentaries. Well worth a listen. He has written other books, which I am now inspired to read.
