- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIf you want a good book covering all the oaks of North America (not Mexico) then this is the best book out there. Each oak species is covered in detail, including range maps, possible hybrids and other facts regarding growth, size and leaf structure. Close up photos leaves and full photos of trees give the reader a good background for identification of an oak species in the field. The authors separte eastern oaks from western oaks and the section on western oaks has a subsection on oaks west of 100W within the trans Pecos region. Great book to own or give as a gift to a friend that loves oaks.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI will start off by saying I would give the content of the book 5 stars! It is a fantastic reference and you can quickly tell that the authors are very knowledgeable and love oaks. Unfortunately, the quality of the book/binding is poor. I have had the book for a little over a month now, and multiple groups of pages have broken off from the binding and fallen out. Probable ~20 or so pages have come unbound in this time.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2007Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe book does have an introduction talking about the broad classifications of types of oaks, history of oak usage, historic management of oak forests, etc. But this introduction is short, and then the book gets into the nitty-gritty of identification. Not just red vs. white, but every single documented variant the author found in his extensive research. For all but one of these oaks, the author visited and examined a live specimen himself.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2008Format: PaperbackI draw oak leaves and it is important to me that I identify them correctly. This book tells me everything I need to know. I especially like that he shows more than one example of the leaf, as there are some widely varying differences in leaves of the same type tree. This is now my oak leaf bible.
