- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2015For anyone wanting to know the way Congress REALLY works, this book is essential. My wife spent time in the White House in the late 1970s and she recommended this book to me. I have PhD work on American government, but I never really knew what the daily life of a congressman was until I read this book.
Applying the principles of anthropology to explain the behavior of Capitol Hill is a unique perspective. You can find the different tribes and what they do. Things in TRIBES ON THE HILL are just the same today as when the book was written, except that gridlock and inaction from Congress is currently at an all time high now. I have read thousands of books on American government, and this one is definitely on my best list.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2014Great job, Jack! What a well reasoned expose in an ethnographic manner of the Congress and of the staff. Good job from a fellow applied Anthropologist from WAPA!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2014I was interested in this book because I was a Congressional Aide for one of the "Watergate Babies" and news that the remaining five had announced their retirement-- Senator Max Baucis of Montana and Congressmen Henry Waxman and George Miller of California.
I have not finished the book but I am pleased with the finding aids of a good bibiography and an index that contains the names of people I remember. Political anthropology and geology give the book a novel viewpoint and I look forward to finishing it. My boss was Congressman Jim Lloyd(D-35) was killed in a one car crash two years ago. He held a Republican district including parts of Nixon's old district where the Republicans stayed home in shame. However their memories were short so he was swept out of office in the Reagan landslide.
