The recipient of numerous awards from diverse professional organizations for the impact of his work, Dr. Putnam is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina and Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. He is currently writing "Something Terrible Happened to These Children: A Memoir of Sorts", illuminating behind-the-scenes issues in the welfare of America’s most vulnerable children.

Multiple Personality books by Putman, et al.

I have been ordering quite a few books by experts in the field of Multiple personality. As I am a multiple myself, I am searching for some answers to experiences I have had with my multiplicity. Various specialists, including Putman have in a rather "off the cuff" way expressed their witnessing of completely physical differences between alters; looks, speech, and of the most importance to me, different physical ailments not shared with either the host or the body. I have experienced this phenomenal flux may times. I have had cysts, tumors, suspicious skin spots, perhaps gout, etc. all disappear when examined by a specialist. I have come across a little chat room or something with other MPDs talking about these same issues. The most common issue is the inability to get prescription glasses that work as someone else takes the test. To all of you multiples out there, at least those who are far-sighted, get some bi-focal readers in various strengths. Even with the many books I have read, I have found no specialist in Multiple Personality Disorder who has any empirical evidence to offer, nor a way to allow the host (main alter or alters) to overcome these problems. Does anybody out there have a solution? By the way, if you want a good laugh, read Lowenstien"s DID expose, where the inconvience of something as insignificant as a hang nail can just have one dissociating all over the place. As someone who went through fifteen years of absolute hell, her findings are insulting and redicule and trivialize the years of abuse suffered by most multiples.

Putnam's classic book provides a superb presentation of multiple personality disorder as it was conceptualized and treated through the 70s and 80s, prior to the re-characterization of Dissociative Identify Disorder (DID). Etiologically the model assumes traumatic abuse in childhood (as opposed to other traumatic phenomena later in life)and as described treatment includes a structured elicitation of the "alternates"--an approach not now typically used in the treatment of DID. The volume provides both theoretical and case based treatment examples from one of the major thinkers in this area.
