Eumeswil, ostensibly a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel, is effectively a comprehensive synthesis of Ernst Jünger's mature thought, with a particular focus on new and achievable forms of individual freedom in a technologically monitored and managed postmodern world. Here Jünger first fully develops his figure of the anarch, the inwardly liberated and outwardly pragmatic individual, who lives peacefully in the heart of Leviathan and is yet able to preserve his individuality and freedom. Composed of a series of short passages and fragments, Eumeswil follows the reflections of Martin Venator, a historian living in a futuristic city-state ruled by a dictator known as the Condor. Through Venator, the prototypical anarch, Jünger offers a broad and uniquely insightful analysis of history from the post-historic perspective and, at the same time, presents a vision of future technological developments, including astonishingly prescient descriptions of today's internet (the luminar), smartphone (the phonophore), and genetic engineering. At once a study of accommodation to tyranny and a libertarian vision of individual freedom, Eumeswil continues to speak to the contradictions and possibilities inherent in our twenty-first-century condition.

Probably Ernst Junger's most ambitious work. It's not for the timid. Or shallow. This is how characters like Winston Smith in Orwell's fanciful "Nineteen Eighty Four" actually manage to survive and the realities of any state, democratic or autocratic.
Julius Evola's "Ride the Tiger" is similar.
Junger's "anarch" is something of Evola's "aristocrat of the soul", which are the only bastions of freedom.
They are both above politics, and so they understand "what can be offered" and expect nothing more but nothing less from it.
Both Evola and Junger lived through 4 regimes in their own lifetimes.
We're living through a regime change, ourselves, today.
Evola and Junger offer sound advice from the Old World to the New World as it perhaps comes of age.

excellent. if you are not particularly well read or educated, you may find yourself googling every other sentence to understand the reference. worth the read either way, the erudition is unmatched.

Overpriced

Format: Kindle Edition

The writing is wonderful, like the rest of Junger, but at twenty one bucks this Kindle edition is outrageously overpriced. No doubt many people will vote that this review unhelpful, but I hope people consider that it's not just the writing, but the edition that is under review, and hence its corresponding price.

Telos Press Publishing seems to be new to Kindle publishing, and so far they show a tendency to overprice its books. I hope this is corrected, as I would buy more books from them.

I encourage Kindle users to Google the publisher's website and contact them about their pricing.
