This experienced school teacher reveals the inner workings of the school system, it's less than honorable history, and will make you seriously reconsider your view of education and how the school system has affected it. This particular book is a HUGE work in which he exposes the errors of short-answer tests, bells, uniform time blocks, age-grading, standardization, and all the rest of school religion. This groundbreaking, revolutionary work will change the way you look at the process and even the very concept of public education. Every parent should read this book! It shows how compulsory schooling came to be as it is in America with a lure of utopia and a very strong Prussian connection (which should be cause for much concern). It also exposes the affects of compulsory schooling on America, drawing both from history (showing alarming drops in education, literacy, and much more) and 30 years of school-teaching experience.

***You CAN read this book online for free from his website... (Amazon won't let me put in a link, so just google his name and you'll find it.) BUT, like I said, this is a HUGE book, and reading it all online would be quite tiresome to the eyes. I actually started reading it on his site but it hooked me in so I decided to buy it in book form.

This book is a very worthwhile read. I will say that it isn't 100% optimally organized and edited, but you won't find the material easily elsewhere either. So... if you're willing to be a little forgiving on the writing in places, you'll learn more than you ever dreamed of the true history of American Education.

His books have helped me to rethink my view of education- what it can be, what it should be, and what it isn't in America. This has been of great help as my husband and I have decided to educate our own children, and we've reshaped our views of education.

I also highly recommend reading his other books... they are much shorter, and are revealing of the current state of schools from his 30 year school-teaching experience:

Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling (which shows the deliberate dumbing down of the American School System, and displays "how the U.S. educational system cranks out students the way Detroit cranks out Buicks. He contends that students are more programmed to conform to economic and social norms rather than really taught to think.")

Weapons of Mass Instruction: A Schoolteacher's Journey Through the Dark World of Compulsory Schooling: "Focuses on mechanisms of compulsory schooling which cripple imagination and discourage critical thinking. Here is a demonstration that the harm school inflicts is quite rational and deliberate. The real function of pedagogy is to render the common population manageable, remove the obligation of child care from adult workers so they are free to fuel the industrial economy and to train the next generation into subservient obedience to the state."

**Although I can't give a direct link in this review, you can find my website by accessing my profile. I mention that because I have a LOT of great resources on my site for those who are in the process of rethinking education and determining what that means for them and their children.**

(I apologize for the Angry Tone of this review as well how it sort of "Rambles" along.)

I have just started reading this book.. and I will rewrite this review after I've read it.

There were 2 ONE STAR reviews. I have to conclude that these folks have an agenda of their own. And THANKS Amazon for letting us confront the reviewers! A great feature more review sites need.

I had a very hard time in the Las Vegas - Clark County School system going up here. In my senior year of school.. I actually found my teachers conspiring against me. (Walked into the teachers lounge and found them sitting at the same table - they got very disturbed when I saw them. Remember these "Teachers" were not friends and never ate together) The rest is "History".. but I did get my HS diploma despite their BS.

--------

What is crystal clear to me is that American Education has been "Frozen in time" for the last 35 years. Despite the occasional Media reports to the contrary. We (As Americans) have totally "Changed" not only as a culture.. but also in our technology over the last 35 years.. We now have the Internet, Wikipedia, Social Networking. Cell Phones - now with incredible "Apps" and features that improve our quality of life. (The ability to call for help ANYWHERE was unheard of just 15 years ago) Rapid prototyping (using computers) that can bring nearly any consumer product to market in months vs. years. The list goes on.

The only other "Frozen" or sealed in the time capsule is our homes. We still build homes (little or big boxes) roughly the same way as we did 100 years ago. Bucky Fuller: "Craft & Graft"

The difference is that communities are designed to manipulate the residents. Here in Vegas it is impossible to live any kind of life without a car. You can't even ride your bicycle to the store to buy food! Also "Law Enforcement" can ENTER your home effortlessly. (just like the bad guys) Because our homes were "Built" that way. So much for the American dream of real Independence. Try growing a garden that could feed your family in your tiny backyard. That is if the home owners association will allow it.

---------------

If you read "Wiki".. It is easy to conclude that "We have been led and bred". Standard Education is at the root of this. They have perfected the "Passive" classroom. High School is still nothing more than "baby Sitting".. Keeping the kids OUT of the workforce. The diploma is far more "Political" than a result of your knowledge, talents, or learned skills. '

---------------

What is MOST important.. is that for an issue that every parent has an opinion on. There is virtually no books that discuss/deconstruct education. If you are a child/Parent that has serous problems with their public education experience.. there is nobody to get answers from. (Ok.. credible/logical/factual answers from)

Even if this book is just an angry rant. We should have 500 such books! Not just one.

In 1996 while attending (going back to) Community College... I hunted like crazy to find a book that explains the "Study Process" and how to GET THROUGH school. I found ONE. And the one I found was used. Seems that such books or anything that would help an "Independent" learner never made the cut.

I haven't checked lately.. but I'm sure that whatever is out there is either JUNK.. or we are treated to very few titles.

--------------

Just finished watching a documentary on Tibet. One of the ways China is "gobbling up Tibet" is to install compulsory schools. Imprison anybody that refused to go! And throw in Jail anybody that says the words "Dali Lama". Yea really.

Tibet is used as dumping ground.. Toxic waste, etc. as well as china is getting ready to MINE all of their natural resources. They even completely harvested an entire forest. (that will never grow back)

In other words.. China is using their Schools as Weapons against Tibet. Which makes me think of what we did to the American Indian. Schools created to STRIP the culture (soul) out of the Indian. It was big business (back then) to pursue runaways. Many times children would be imprisoned, beaten, and used as forced labor. The rest found themselves in mental institutions.

-------------

Right or wrong.. Rant or not. This book is LONG OVER DUE. We need a serious debate about how our schools are manipulating America's future citizens.

The quotes in this book alone are really amazing and so eye-opening! The American history I learned in high school (and that includes AP American History) tells you nothing about what has really been going on behind the scenes in America. This book does. The dedication of Big Money to non-democratic principles and their creation and use of public education to further their non-democratic aims, specifically to create an undereducated underclass of cheap labor, is all described, with amazing quotes from the people who are pulling all the strings. Also it details the incredibly anti-human, a-moral, elitist thinking of those in charge (who are not our elected representatives). People need to know these things. People do know them, vaguely, or at least they suspect all this, but people need to see the direct quotes of these elitists who ran things in the last century. This book is long and dense. Most books I can finish in an evening or two, but this one has taken me much, much longer! But I have been fascinated the whole way through!
