As a physician who treats Rheumatoid Arthritis I realize that modern medicine is very limited in what it can do for this disorder. This book will give you options beyond anything you dreamed possible ..and it works. I tell my RA patients - even if you do nothing else for now - just read this book! --Thomas Alexander, MD., Seattle, Washington

I had RA for many, many years. I tried every so called cure. It was only when I read this book that I hit the jackpot. This coming September will be 2 years that I am totally free of any medication and the pain is almost non-existent. Ingrid, South Africa

Your discoveries are a miracle! A month ago, overnight I developed a severe arthritic reaction/condition. In the last 2 weeks I have gone from being completely unable to walk, to walking pain free, symptom free! Kerry Harrison, West Virginia

My husband's arthritis began at only 22 years of age and it was progressing fast. He has been off ALL medication for almost 6 months now and we are on our way to complete recovery. His right hand is totally normal. The info here WORKS!!!!!! Reader, Atascadero, California

I have osteoarthritis and have been following Barbara's recommendations for about a month now. I can already tell a difference in the way I feel. If I cheat, I can really tell the difference the next day. Linda Squires, Orlando, Florida

I suffer from both RA and Ankylosing Spondolitis. When I'm good at sticking to this program, I'm almost in complete remission. I have been able to stop taking the Methatrexate and Lodin. This is a really great program and it works if you have the discipline and self motivation to go through it and stick it out. S. Kahler

This is a very important book - putting together all this information in one place. What a gift to the world. Jan Adamson, extensive food allergies, Ottawa, Canada

The hidden allergen lists alone are worth the price of the book. Helen Eisen, poet, St. Louis, Missouri

At age 30, after being a college athlete and in perfect health, my daughter was diagnosed with RA. We were devastated!! Two years later, she was on Enbrel, methotrexate and other meds for her condition--things looked pretty hopeless. Researching on Amazon's site, we came across Barbara's book and thought it sounded too good to be true! After all, the rheumatologists were telling us there was no cure. We had nothing to lose but the price of the book, a little time and effort. One year ago, we started with the fast that Barbara recommends and we were absolutely shocked with what happened. After 5 days, my daughter was completely without pain, swelling or any sign of RA. We were ecstatic!! Now, the problem was sustaining it! After a period of six months, she was able to come off Enbrel and methotrexate, but not all of her meds. However, though it is slow,we continue to make progress. Barbara s book became our source of strength when we thought about giving up. It was precise, thorough, informative and most importantly--certain this could be done. Reader

This book is the best book I have ever read about arthritis. I know the author and I knew her before she was cured and after so I know what an amazing change she was able to make in her life. I have mild arthritis and have found her advice more helpful than anything a doctor ever told me. This book can really change your life if you have arthritis. Chalotte Ellis, Retired Libarian, St. Louis Missouri

About the Author

I have now had the privilege of spending years coaching people with arthritis on how to get well. Because I have experienced of how well this book works for so many different people and so many different types of arthritis, I am more excited about it now than ever before. This second edition has important updates that make healing from arthritis even quicker and easier. My own arthritis came on suddenly and left me in chronic, overwhelming pain that often made it difficult to walk even a few steps without passing out. Sometimes my hands hurt so much that I couldn't hold silverware well enough to feed myself. After four and a half years of conventional treatments that did little or nothing to improve my condition, I decided that if I continued to follow the conventions dictated by the current medical model, I was unlikely to ever get well. My graduate school training is in molecular biology at Washington University in St. Louis, one of the major medical research centers in the United States. I spent years researching the medical literature looking for effective ways to heal arthritis. I also explored and experimented with alternative medicine. After 11 years of searching, I was eventually able to completely overcome my arthritic condition using the nine secrets detailed in my book. Each method provided a lasting and dramatic improvement in my condition. After years of having difficulty walking from one room to another, I now walk many miles a week with ease and go on long bike rides for fun. I have regained full use of my hands and my hips. The pain and fatigue are gone. The book I have written is the book I wish had been available when I first developed arthritis. It would have saved me years of pain and incapacitation. May it help you find your own way back to renewed health and vigor.

At age 25 Barbara Allan became one of the over 9.1 million people in the United States with an autoimmune-type arthritis. Her arthritis was triggered by a bout of bacterial dysentery caused by eating food tainted with a bacterium called Shigella. She was on vacation at the time.

Reactive arthritis was the name given to her condition. In many respects, it is very similar to rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, she eventually got well using methods proven to work for rheumatoid arthritis.

The onset of her arthritis was about 6 weeks after the dysentery. The arthritis came on very suddenly and left her in chronic, overwhelming pain that often made it difficult to walk even a few steps without passing out. Sometimes the pain was so bad that she was incapable of rational thought, or any thought at all. Sometimes her hands hurt so much she couldn't even hold silverware well enough to feed herself. For years she lived with the loss of many things that she had valued highly: her health, her mobility and to a some extent the use of her mind. She lost friendships, status, the ability to continue as a graduate student, and the ability to hold a regular job.

Usually this type of arthritis goes away within a month, but her case went on for years. Her doctors didn't know what to do with her. Nothing they tried did much good.

Her illness led her to devote 11 years of her life to systematically researching and personally testing promising alternative therapies until she perfected the nine secrets that successfully cured her own difficult disease.

When she first got sick, she started reading everything she could get her hands on related to the latest scientific research on the causes of arthritis and possible new treatments. In a doctoral program in molecular biology at Washington University in St. Louis, one of the major medical research universities in the country, this type of information was readily available to her. When she was in too much pain to leave her apartment, friends brought copies of journal articles to her. Unfortunately, the most promising research was years away from possible clinical trials, and the current cutting edge treatments were not very effective.

After four and a half years of conventional treatments that did little or nothing to improve her condition, she decided that if she continued to follow the conventions dictated by the current medical model, she was unlikely to get well. Even those in the medical field are aware that few patients treated by rheumatologists can expect any lasting or substantial improvements. She needed a new plan.

In her next phase of the search, she started evaluating everything she came across in the lay press that promised to help arthritis, pain, or rebuild health. Not surprisingly, much was silly or potentially dangerous. In this category are claims that arthritis can be cured by burial in horse manure, taking cocaine, topical application of motor oil, brake fluid, gasoline, kerosene, and lighter fluid, and sitting in inactive uranium mines.

However, as she avidly read material targeted to the lay public, she did find many treatments that made sense and that were supported by studies published in reputable research journals. She applied these promising alternative therapies to her own condition. Some helped and some didn't.

Eventually she was able to completely overcome her arthritic condition using the nine secrets mentioned in the title of her book. Each method provided a lasting and dramatic improvement in her condition. After years of having difficulty just walking from one room to another, she now enjoys walking many miles a week and goes on 30-50 mile bike rides for fun. She has regained full use of her hands and her hips. The pain and fatigue are gone. In addition, her health has improved each of the last 8 years since she discovered these methods. She credits this to the fact that she has continued to use and refine the health promoting measures described in Conquering Arthritis, allowing her body to heal at deeper and deeper levels.

I cannot express what a blessing this book is in our lives. My husband's arthritis began at only 22 years of age and it was progressing fast. No one in my family has this disease and I did not know where to turn except a specialist. We saw a specialist for a few years, and I always asked was there nothing more we could do to cure the arthritis? I could not believe that he would have to be on medication for the rest of his life. Since he was in his early twenties, this would mean years and years of constant, daily medication. Of course this would eventually mean problems with other parts of his body due to medication intake. I still did not know where to go to find a cure rather than just an immune supressant. Then, he came home one day after an appointment with his doctor involving a new set of x-rays. He was now being told that his bones were starting to be eaten away and bones in his left hand had most likely fused together. He was still only 27 at this point! I could not imagine what permanent consequences would come over the next years and I could see him not being able to play with our little boy or do anything with his hands in the future. This pushed me to stop at nothing to find the cure. I knew it had to be out there, but where? After tons of research and reading, I found the cure!!! I cannot begin to express my thanks to the author and her research and her sharing with the world. I just can't understand why the medical community does not know, or if they know, why they don't share the knowledge. My husband is in college and this very night was studying Rheumatoid Arthritis in his anatomy class. They have NO information on how diet and food sensitivities can cause RA and they state they know of no cure or really good medications. It just blows me away that millions of people suffer when the cure is out there, available, and really not difficult. If you or someone you know has RA, please get a hold of this book! I was unsure about the cost, but boy am I glad I tried it out anyhow! We found that corn is his sensitivity, which makes cooking a little more tricky at first, but once we figured out what he can and cannot eat, we are doing great! It took a little effort in the beginning to find the ingredients that will work, and we had to adjust recipes, but he eats totally normal. In fact, we all eat more healthy now. And I don't mean bran and tasteless food. We eat everything we ate before, but now it is fresh and from scratch. He has been off ALL medication for almost 6 months now and we are on our way to complete recovery. His right hand is totally normal now, and we are soon going to try the recommended trigger point method to fix his "fusion". The info here WORKS!!!!!! It takes dedication and a short lifestyle adjustment, but what a blessing everything in this book has been. An answer to many prayers! THANK YOU!!!

UPDATE
I just want everyone to know that years later he is still free of arthritis AND he was able to re-introduce corn after waiting the 2-3 years suggested by the author, and he can eat corn and has no reaction! I guess it may not work for some people, but I will tell you, it worked for us! Also, I just want to point out that we followed everything to the letter. Complete fasting for several days, off all medication, waiting until he felt good before introducing any food, introducing one item at a time, not moving on until we were certain he was ready, keeping all forms of the culprit out completely, no cheating, no fudging, and waiting at least 3 days after introducing grains. If it is not working, ask yourself if there is someone that you are not giving it your all. Maybe it just won't work for you, but give it your BEST effort, not just a PARTIAL effort. It is TOUGH, TOUGH, TOUGH. Insane amounts of label reading, making EVERYTHING from scratch, no eating out at restaurants, not eating what someone else makes for you, sometimes having to bring something else to a potluck or family dinner, but it is worth it. Years later he can eat anything and has no arthritis! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I have had RA for 20 years and with conventional medicine somewhat predictably failing me - I came across this book. It got me thinking about broader health concepts and the potential root cause of chronic illnesses like my own. The book was for me, an excellent starting point which lead me further down the path of natural medicine - anti-oxidents and a wheat-free diet. After 2 months I am feel a lot better than I have in 20 years.
This book cannot answer all questions & issues associated with different chronic illnesses, but what a great read and a great start to a better quality of life.

I came across this book after I started to have a suspicion about nightshade intolerance. My doctor (and M.D. actually) had suggested I try to stay way from nightshade for a month to see if it had any positive effect on joint pain (that started about 18 months ago). I can say now that in my case, there is a very strong correlation between what I eat and pain in joints. If I eat tomatoes, potatoes or eggplant I will start to get pain in my wrists within 1-2 hours. If I completely abstain from eating any more nightshade the pain will gradually disappear within 24-36 hours. The amounts of food that trigger pain might be as little as less than a potato/tomato. When I eat more I also get pain in elbows, shoulders, hips, ankles and toes. The pain is symmetrical left/rt side. Today I also noticed that coffee (which I have stayed away from for a while now) also seems to trigger the same symptoms. (coffee plant is also nightshade). The other symptom I also get from nightshades is weakness in the muscles in hands and forearms. I read that the alkaloid that's in nightshades (solanine/tomatin etc.) can interfere with neurological communication with muscles by blocking the receptors. After having reduced nightshade to very infrequent and minimal consumption, I am free from these symptoms again.

I'm a 36 year old man who has been vegetarian for 10 years (also staying away from milk and wheat for the most part which cause other symptoms (mucus)).

The book recommends elimination diet which is worth trying. But for me it was sufficient to just avoid night shades without having to go through the rigors of eliminating most foods. The book recommends the Alcat test, I personally decided not to because there is no more accurate indication that what you observe yourself in terms of symptoms! The blood test is only 60% accurate (that is, doing the test twice will only give you approximately similar results, so there is not much to gain from it. Also, doing some research about the test, those who recommend the Alcat test can receive referral bonuses. I found a better deal on the Alcat test on a different website than the Author's so look around.)

Everyone is different and cause of arthritis symptoms may vary widely. By doctor tested me negative for RA so I have some general type of arthritis.

I can imagine most people will not even try the elimination diet as many people cannot even bear the idea of changing their diet... which is too bad. It may also take longer to notice any change by eliminating offending foods if one has had symptoms for a long time I read from another source. My reasoning is that if I can change my diet then it is worth it no doubt if I can avoid damage being done to my joints...

Thanks for writing this book, I hope many will benefit from it so that they can reduce or eliminate their pain and symptoms if foods are the cause (other causes might be pesticides, mercury fillings, artificial sweeteners, MSG...so it doesn't just need to be foods).

PS Another reviewer commented that the author mostly talked about RA. But I don't think this matters, because the foods you eat can cause arthritis even though it is not RA. This book could probably be applicable to people with fibromyalgia, CFS etc. too since we're talking auto-immune diseases).

This book is about the experiences of the author. After reading, I found myself motivated knowing that there could be a variety of different treatments for arthritis. I just have a little bum knee and a little bit of arthritis in my neck, but seeing how debilitating the author was and how she has rebounded put into perspective how minimal my aches and pains truly are. If some simple techniques at this stage of the game are tried, perhaps some of the symptoms I am experiencing can be diminished as I grow older. I wouldn’t say this is a must-read, but I would certainly say it’s an interesting read and adds a new perspective on the treatment of arthritis in someone successful mission.
