About the Author

r. erica doyle was born in Brooklyn to Trinidadian immigrant parents, and has lived in Washington, DC, Farmington, Connecticut and La Marsa, Tunisia. Her work has been anthologized in Best American Poetry, Our Caribbean: A Gathering of Gay and Lesbian Writing from the Antilles, Gumbo: A Celebration of African American Writing, Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam, Gathering Ground: A Reader Celebrating Cave Canem's First Decade and Voices Rising: Celebrating 20 Years of Black Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Writing. Her poetry and fiction appear in various journals, including Ploughshares, Callaloo, Bloom, From the Fishouse, Blithe House Quarterly and Sinister Wisdom.

Her articles and reviews have appeared in Ms. Magazine, Black Issues Book Review and on the Best American Poetry and Futurepoem blogs. She has received grants and awards from the Hurston/Wright Foundation, the Astraea Lesbian Writers Fund, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the Humanities Council of DC and Poets and Writers, and she was a New York Foundation for the Arts Poetry Fellow. Erica is also a fellow of Cave Canem: A Workshop and Retreat for Black Writers.

In addition, she has read her work at the Kennedy Center, the National Black Arts Festival, Joe's Pub, the Nuyorican, the Calabash International Literary Festival in Jamaica, WI and various colleges and universities. Erica received her MFA in Poetry from The New School, and lives in New York City, where she is an administrator in the NYC public schools and facilitates Tongues Afire: A Free Creative Writing Workshop for queer women and trans and gender nonconforming people of color.

I know that R Erica Doyle is talented writer, but this fell short for me. I appreciated the intimacy of her prose. It just didn't move me emotionally.

Gorgeous collection – not for the faint of heart.

The poems in this collection are too urgent, too honest about our bodies to be merely decorative. The language unfolds in an associative rush that evokes a sweatier version of John Ashbery. Most of the poems use the second person, a gesture this gay reader experienced as dissociative. This dissociative impulse becomes a theme in the collection, all the better to explore the way sexual desire fractures us, makes us strangers to ourselves. The sex described is always hot and sometimes pursued insistently and sometimes riddled through with cruelty. Friends of the protagonist hover on the sidelines, offering feeble advice that ends up sounding distant from the heat of the protagonist's desire. Desire, it seems, may brings us fleeting moments of connection but it also isolates us from the world. Desire makes our appetite monstrous. Did I mention that in all of this corporeality, all of this jaggedness, there are moments of literary grace that will take your breath away? "Gather in her breasts like sails". "Old women clutching Christmas packages watch you with remorse". Gorgeous collection – not for the faint of heart.

The Sex in (Lesbian) Sexuality

I stumbled upon this book, carried it away with me, and read it four times consecutively. Beautiful, urgent, haunting. Emphasizes the sex in lesbian sexuality, a subject close to the heart and closer to the core yet something often ignored by lesbian writers. I appreciated the honesty.
Will definitely share this book and encourage others to read it, because simply put, it is a book that should be read.
