THE ORIGINAL MASTERPIECE

Inferno (Italian for “Hell”) is the ﬁrst part of Dante Alighieri’s 14th-century epic poem Divine Comedy. It is an allegory telling of the journey of Dante through Hell, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. In the poem, Hell is depicted as nine circles of suffering located within the Earth. Allegorically, the Divine Comedy represents the journey of the soul towards God, with the Inferno describing the recognition and rejection of sin.

About the Author

ROBERT HOLLANDER has taught The Divine Comedy to Princeton students for thirty-nine years. He is the author of a dozen monographs, editions, and translations, and some six dozen articles on Dante, Boccaccio, and other writers. A member of Princeton's Department of Romance Languages and the former chairman of its Department of Comparative Literature, he has received many awards, including the Gold Medal of the city of Florence in recognition of his Dante scholarship. JEAN HOLLANDER, his wife, is a poet, teacher, and director of the Writers' Conference at the College of New Jersey. They are at work translating Dante's Purgatorio and Paradiso, and Doubleday will publish their complete Divine Comedy in 2002.

Right cover, Wrong book

Upon arrival of my order, I opened this book to check it out. Turns out some one had glued this cover onto another book, "The War of Art". interesting read... But not what I ordered. Just glad it was for personal reading and not a class or I would of been in trouble.

The Wrong Book

I thought I was getting the Hollander translation of The Inferno, but this is not it. It's my own fault for making this mistake. I looked at the professional reviews, and they indicated that it was the Hollander translation they were reviewing, and I looked at several user reviews, and some mentioned that it was the Hollander translation. BUT, I didn't Look Inside the Book, where I would have seen that it's very cheap rendition indeed. Dover probably has a better translation. On the frontispiece, it says that this edition is based on a translation by Cary in 1892. Ugh. Horrible translation. Don't make the same mistake.

BEWARE! Amazon may send you a 4th-rate edition by the Rev. Clare from 1898, with no notes, no introduction, in place of the excellent translation by the Hollanders. This edition is designated as a Special Edition from Benton Press. For a few dollars more you can get the real thing! And then you will not have the hassle of sending it back!
