- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2013I decided to buy this book after I did a search on Windows 95 for Dummies to find out that this was the same author. I've always been ahead of all of the computer users because I carried around Windows 95 for Dummies religiously. If you think you're an expert with Windows, most likely you aren't. I found this out after people would type the entire web address for a website while I only held control and wrote in the name of the website without the www and without the com. This book is just as informative, and will teach you tricks that most don't know.
I recently bought a laptop without a touch screen and felt like I was being cheated. Windows 8 was not confusing, but I was very frustrated with the hot corners method. I would have to move the pointer to one of the corners, and would usually end of just saying "I can't stand this operating system". I quickly learned that I don't have to use that stupid hot corners method. What a relief! That method works well for touchscreens, but not for me with my basic laptop. I quickly learned that the Windows flag key was the most important key on the keyboard. I've never used that key for any of the prior operating systems. NEVER ONCE!
If you tap that button, magic appears, and you aren't lost anymore. Hold it down and tap the letter C and your charms appear. I then followed all the instructions to make a beautiful desktop that the author suggested. WOW! No more vanilla desktop, and my start screen has Wikipedia, free games I found at the Microsoft apps store and the Netflix tile is in the trash. I will continue to carry this book around, as I have learned a lot, and want my knowledge to grow.
As far as the DVD, he author made a brief appearance on the DVD, but for the most part it was another man speaking, and I found him to be boring, although informative. I only paid about $0.50 more for the DVD so I can't complain too much. If you decide to go with just the book, you'll be fine.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2013I really MUST be a dummy after all. When I bought my new Dell PC and registered it online, I got a free download of this book in pdf version, and forgot all about it.
Anyway, it IS much easier to have a printed copy of a book to look at rather than trying to read a pdf file on your screen at the same time you are trying to figure out how to do something else. This is only the 2nd "For Dummies" book I've bought. The first one was for Facebook a while back, and it was useless and very dis-organized. I found this one, for Windows 8, is really a good reference book that is organized and has a good index to look things up.
As for Windows 8 itself, I'm not happy with it, but that's another story, but it creates the need for books like this.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2012This book is wonderful. It has been so helpful to go through every section of the book and follow along on the computer. I have been learning new things each time. Andy has a great sense of humor too and interjects little nuggets of sarcasm! This book is great not only for new Windows 8 users but for anyone who may not understand all there is to learn on a computer. There are so many aspects of a computer that I never knew before. Can only do so much with the one I use at work and have never had a real computer to use at home. I am outlining all of the important points. It is going to be very helpful to refer back to when I am proficient at Windows 8 and need to look something up. So glad I bought this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2013I'd wager sales of this "Dummies" book have steeply declined with the various "fixes" offered by 3rd parties and MSN itself for the unpopular Windows 8 operating system. Perhaps because of cost-cutting focuses, MSN attempted to make the eighth Windows version work on multiple platforms such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktops. This "one-size-fits-all" strategy is inherently problematic; the needs and functions required by a smartphone user are not always the same as the desktop user. The biggest issue which this book addresses well is understanding the new tile-like Start screen. It is much more user friendly and functionally logical in the smaller touch screen version but cumbersome for laptop and mouse-wielding desktop users. (especially if you are new to Windows 8) If you are determined to slog along with Win. 8 on your laptop or desktop, this book will give you some useful information (which one wishes MSN would have provided up-front for free in the first place-but you have to dig around MSN to find that information) In my case, because I ordered a desktop with Win 8 Pro, I was allowed to downgrade to Win 7 Pro and have been a happy camper ever since. (however, it made this book largely redundant) Since then, as previously mentioned, MSN has come out with a more user-friendly 8.1 or whatever version which puts back the start screen and other parties have offered software that makes the previous or "Classic" start functions visible while keeping Windows 8 as an operating system. Given this tacit acknowledgment by MSN of Windows 8 deficiencies, doubtful this book will have as much value today as in the past but as a reference I still consider it worthwhile. While your computer may not have Win. 8, chances are you may encounter such an equipped unit down the line. (or at least until the next Windows version comes out) The author of this Dummies book opines most if not all of Windows 8 features will be around for a long time. But perhaps MSN's CEO Mr. Ballmer may be paying the price for this imperfect system and the declining company revenue caused by it. In a perfect product world, Dummies books would never been needed, but with today's increasing technical complexity, they are and will be for the foreseeable future.

BOOKS FROM DUMMIES ARE TO THE POINT AND SIMPLIFIED FOR DUMMIES. FULL OF UP TO DATE INFO WITH LOTS OF ILLUSTRATIONS AND TIPS AND ANDY IS ALSO A GREAT AUTHOR. WINDOWS 8 IS A REALITY ROUND THE CORNER AND DUMMY BOOKS ARE THE GUIDING LIGHT.

I have received in good condition
Mr. R. V. MalinReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 6, 20135.0 out of 5 stars This book should be included with every new W8 PC!
I think one or two of the reviewers of this book/dvd combination have mistakenly vented their feelings about the operating system itself and not this excellent 'idiots' guide! In fact you don't need to be a 'dummy' or an 'idiot' to benefit from this book. I've been using windows based PC's for over 25 years and I have to say this most recent Windows operating system is the least intuitive of all of them. However, this well written and quite humorous manual is essential if you are to master some of the baffling aspects of W8. You will learn how to re-instate the 'Start' button, how to download a free application to enable you to play a DVD (oddly Windows 8 does not come with any built in DVD playback software) as well as the various options when it comes to setting up user accounts. I am sure if Microsoft had employed the author, Andy Rathbone (he's written many other 'Dummies' books) to assist with the development of the operating system itself, then Windows 8 would not have come in for so much criticism and negative publicity.
It's hard to imagine any other consumer product that needs so much setting up, installing, registering, configuring etc all before you can do anything with it! Thankfully there are people like Andy Rathbone who can make sense of it and present it in an interesting, useful and entertaining way. Highly recommended for beginners and experts alike. Every new computer should include a copy of this terrific book/dvd package!
