Windows 10 started out as a kind of booby prize for folks who got suckered into buying Windows 8. Although it still isn't as popular as Windows 7, many of the original kinks are (finally!) ironed out. What hasn't changed, though, is Win10's snooping, and its infuriating insistence on updating itself. There are some tricks, which I discuss in the book.

If you're looking for a rehash of Microsoft's Party Line, you're looking in the wrong place.

I've been writing books for a long time. My first book - "Windows 3.1 Programming For Mere Mortals" - came out at the dawn of the Windows era. Along the way, I've learned that most folks appreciate the straight story, and that's what you'll find in all of my books, including this one. If there's a problem, I tell you about it, and try to steer you around it. If something works well (for example, everybody should enable Restore points!), I not only point you to the feature, I explain in depth how to make it work right -- for you. If you don't need something -- antivirus in Windows 10 being a good example, because Win10 has all the AV you'll ever need -- I warn you to save your money. Lots of money.

The straight story. No sugar coating. I wrote this book for you, not for Microsoft.

The book, which I purchased after switching from a Windows 7 machine, follows the standard Dummies layout. I found the author's writing clear and informative, although I could have done with fewer anecdotes and a slightly more concise presentation. However, in this regard I will state that I also took a two day crash course in Windows 10 at a local college. It was no less rambling and full of anecdote (perhaps more so) than the book. The index in Windows 10 All-In-One For Dummies is very well done and greatly enhances the book's utility as a home reference. As a veteran (sometimes successful, more often not) of the Windows Errors Wars, I would have liked to see, within the constraints of the Dummies format, a broader treatment of glitches and error messages.

I also have comprehensive "Dummies" books for Windows 7 and Outlook, and the clarity of the language and the detailed treatment of most topics in the Windows 10 book is as good or better than the other "Dummies" books. So far I have not read all of the chapters in all of the 10 "books" in the Windows 10 books; however, on four or five topics I have had to think out of my box to find information. For both the table of contents and the index, I have to think of synonyms of other ways of describing the topics. Then I make notes in the TOC and the index for future use.

The remainder is useful tips and fixes, and more technical how-tos that I am finding interesting and useful. Pretty expensive for just 1/3 of the material, but I'm not sorry I bought it. Worth about $15.00 to me, maybe more to others. I don't think I'm a typical user.

I originally borrowed this book from the library because I am a hands on person and it is so much easier to have a book than looking up things on the rabbit-hole of the Windows 10 website (there's just so many bookmarks I can make people, ARGH!). I was so impressed with it I had to buy it! The author uses humor and illustrations to keep a dry subject fascinating. So well written, easy to follow it covers everything you need to know plus a lot of useful tips and general information. It's just an all around complete guide for Windows 10. It also includes a website by the author with the latest updates. I highly recommend it!

Too big and technical. It is confusing to have several books by different authors with the same title and be vastly different. I had another version that I lost and thought I was replacing it. Definitely not. This one is twice the size (almost a 1000 pages). Ii draws on the assumption that the reader is computer savvy (I'm not or I wouldn't be buying a book titled "windows 10 for dummies"). Each set of directions requires going to other areas of the book to know what I need to do. In other words, I can't get there from here. If I had the time and cared that much, I need to read and memorize the whole book.
If the author had any interest in appealing to a general audience, he would hand this to someone with their first computer and see what happens

Anyway it's one of the better books available at this level. It's the difference between pressing on to try to at least partly tame the dreaded Windows 10 Beast or just jumping in the canal with your PC tied around your neck, leaving a note saying you just couldn't continue to live in such a cruel, computer-run world.
