When the Internet suddenly stops working, society reels from the loss of flowing data and streaming entertainment. Addicts wander the streets talking to themselves in 140 characters or forcing cats to perform tricks for their amusement, while the truly desperate pin their requests for casual encounters on public bulletin boards. The economy tumbles and the government passes the draconian NET Recovery Act.

For Gladstone, the Net's disappearance comes particularly hard, following the loss of his wife, leaving his flask of Jamesons and grandfather's fedora as the only comforts in his Brooklyn apartment. But there are rumors that someone in New York is still online. Someone set apart from this new world where Facebook flirters "poke" each other in real life and members of Anonymous trade memes at secret parties. Where a former librarian can sell information as a human search engine and the perverted fulfill their secret fetishes at the blossoming Rule 34 club. With the help of his friends---a blogger and a webcam girl, both now out of work---Gladstone sets off to find the Internet. But is he the right man to save humanity from this Apocalypse?

Gladstone, an emotionally detached thirtysomething with a dead-end job, wakes up to find the entire Internet has suddenly and inexplicably ceased to function. In this parody of an apocalypse, the first things missed are the humorous memes, flame wars, and pornography. Without YouTube, zombie-like fun-seekers force cats to do tricks. Craigslist becomes a plywood bulletin board full of ads on index cards. People fax in their search queries for librarians to answer for a fee. When a know-it-all psychic proclaims Gladstone the Internet messiah, he makes him a target for all those who either hope for or fear the technology’s return. Gladstone reluctantly assembles a highly likable cohort of disenfranchised online friends to join him in his search for answers, but since he is burdened by depression, his quest is just as much about finding himself as it is about finding the World Wide Web. An excellent first book of a solid trilogy

As a fan of Gladstone's online work, I had read the precursor of this novel in serial form on his column at Cracked.com. It was an engaging read then, and as expected this novelization is a more polished version (with subtle references to the original articles). The novel is written in a modern-noir style that I enjoy. The main character is flawed in a way that makes you feel empathetic toward him, and also makes you want to slap him silly in nearly equal measure.

The overall premise is that of our world that is virtually unchanged, except with the sudden and unexplained loss of the internet, is both unique and dealt with humor and a disconcerting realism that does what the best noir does: hold a mirror to our society for just slightly longer than is comfortable, while breaking the tension with well-placed comic relief.

The unexpected tenderness toward the end of the story is touching and although tonally different than the novel leading up to it, it doesn't feel tacked on, but rather a natural progression of both the novel and the main character.

Taken by itself, the story is complete enough to enjoy with a satisfying, but open, ending. I eagerly awaited the last two stories in the trilogy and was not disappointed. (reviews for those novels are pending)

This novel could not be more timely. At its core it's the story of a broken man, but woven into and around that plot line there is so much more to be had. The author seemlessly blends emotion with action and satire in a way that exposes us and others we know in the age of the Internet. Extremely well done satire, I might add. Engaging, relevant, witty and with no lack of depth - I can't ask for much more in a novel.

I won't rehash a lot of the synopses you can find here. I will say this book works on many levels, for those who aren't really familiar with Gladstone's previous work on Cracked.com and just want a humorous tale, those who are looking for a quick read on a long flight or a boring day, and for those of us who have been with Glad since the beginning. A few notes:

1. Followers of Gladstone will note some of the little winks to previous Cracked articles ("The Mosque NOT at Ground Zero", for instance)...I'll have to reread it to see which ones I missed.

2. At one point someone asks the narrator while he's in the NY Public Library "How narcissistic does one have to be to read their own journal when surrounded by millions of books?"...Which led me to ask: how narcissistic does one have to be to name the protagonist of the novel after himself?

3. The novel has another subtext that hasn't been mentioned, and that is that it also a tribute to New York City. The fondness with which Gladstone describes the Library, or the grave of a founding father, is clearly felt by the reader.

4. Bonus points for anyone who gets "Glendoria42"

I'm conflicted about the ending...it makes sense, but I'm not sure it "works". I'm also conflicted about whether the series really needs to go on.
