The Redemption of Time: A Three-Body Problem Novel (The Three-Body Problem Series, 4) Hardcover – July 16, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Set in the universe of the New York Times bestselling Three-Body Problem trilogy, The Redemption of Time continues Cixin Liu’s multi-award-winning science fiction saga. This original story by Baoshu―published with Liu’s support―envisions the aftermath of the conflict between humanity and the extraterrestrial Trisolarans.
In the midst of an interstellar war, Yun Tianming found himself on the front lines. Riddled with cancer, he chose to end his life, only to find himself flash frozen and launched into space where the Trisolaran First Fleet awaited. Captured and tortured beyond endurance for decades, Yun eventually succumbed to helping the aliens subjugate humanity in order to save Earth from complete destruction.
Granted a healthy clone body by the Trisolarans, Yun has spent his very long life in exile as a traitor to the human race. Nearing the end of his existence at last, he suddenly receives another reprieve―and another regeneration. A consciousness calling itself The Spirit has recruited him to wage battle against an entity that threatens the existence of the entire universe. But Yun refuses to be a pawn again and makes his own plans to save humanity’s future…

Editorial Reviews
Review
"The Redemption of Time is not a mere derivative of The Three Body Problem, but a thrilling, fascinating new adventure to uncover more mysteries of the Three Body World. " ―Pan Haitian
"This cosmic Romeo and Juliet story takes a welcome journey back to Liu’s fictional universe (with the master’s blessing)." -- Publishers Weekly 'Summer Staff Picks'
"Mind-bendingly fantastic." -- SF in Translation
"...bring[s] to mind the creation story in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion. The universe-engulfing struggle recalls John C. Wright's astonishing multibook Eschaton saga. And the whole has a transcendental quality that might earn a nod from William Blake." -- Kirkus
"The Redemption of Time reveals that everything becomes a part of a fairy tale in the end; yet, this fairy tale has to carry the ultimate meaning of life and the universe." ―Han Song
"A highly imaginative alternate world within the bounds of Liu Cixin's creation.... encapsulates the bountifulness and timeless beauty of the universe." ―Liu Waitong

- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe ending is great and a big surprise. Temporal jumps make it confusing, but still a good read. I was a little surprised at vilification of one of the characters ( which I will not reveal) from Three Body Problem. But the Sophon character has more depth and “personality.”
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLook, when you decide to add book 4 to one of the all-time sci-fi masterpieces (in my mind, the best), you're asking for trouble. It's not just Liu's incredible imagination that this Baoshu is aiming to match, it's brilliant writing. In the former, Baoshu does very well. He adds some nice touches in the backstory, explaining some open loops in the original. It's also a very clever ending. Concerning the writing, Baoshu's not in Liu's class (at least yet.) Some of the writing is trite, and I don't think it has anything to do with the translation.
He also tends to meander, making me wonder just where the heck he's going at times. He does manage to tie everything up nicely in the end. It was worth the read, though I think it should be going for about half the price.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI read this series in a week and half. Couldn't put it down. Can't recommend it enough. Great series for all.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseInteresting, but not necessary to The Body Problem canon.
Yun Tianmimg fell in love and lived a life with AA, on planet blue. They grew old together and after she died, he killed himself. Only to be resurrected by “god” and sent on a mission…
That’s actually the premise.
I knew that it would not be up to Liu’s quality of writing, but I wasn’t prepared for how off it would be.
When Liu goes into detail, you feel as though you’ve gotten a simplified course in physics.
When Baoshu goes into detail, is just a pedantic diatribe that goes oh for far, too long.
I kept putting the book down and after page 150, I began just skimming every other paragraph and finally just skipped about 75 pages altogether as it was just so long, drawn out and boring.
And to top it off, Tianming is really Cixin Liu, and The Three Body Problem is being written to record his previous life in the past universe.
And the might,y Trisolaran race being insects the size of rice with no individual intelligence…. I reject that entirely.
This copy may be heading to the used bookstore soon as it’s not a candidate for a re-read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA perfect ending to a fantastic series. I think I've enjoyed this series more than anything I've ever read in any genre. Truly an astounding work of genius.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA well done final installment for the Three Body Problem series. It does fill in many of the gaps from the previous stories, and provides more insights into what some of the characters were experiencing at various points along the storyline. The scope or overall timeline is incredible, going extremely far into the unimaginable future.
It does seem to require some suspension of belief to take in all the mind bending concepts: eternal beings that exist either forever or outside of time, high-dimensional universes, mini-universes, dimensional strikes: where one civilization attacks another by reducing the number of dimensions, and many more. Some of it seemed far-fetched which is why I didn’t give it 5 stars. It is, however, a good read and worth the time.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAlthough written by a different author, Baoshu's "The Redemption of Time" keeps the writing style and universe of the Three-Body Problem story, and provides it a much deserved good ending. It fills some gaps left open and offers a much better ending. Although the (fictional) science in this book lacks much of the internal coherence of the previous ones and the story takes some (perhaps exaggerated) big turns..once you accept that the story offers a bigger arc to the story that wraps it up. Overall highly recommended if you also feel like me that the end of the Three-Body Problem story could be better
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis series started out confusing. It kept building with plots and sub plots until the the story developed into a complex and masterful piece of literature.
This is not an easy read. There are turns and twists that one might need to go back and reread portions of the story telling.
I love that this is told from an Chinese perspective and culture.
I would highly recommend this series

Kindle CustomerReviewed in Spain on September 13, 20244.0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
Some inconsistencies both with the previous books and with the physics used. The book itself is good, but due to its nature it's hard not to question some things against the content of the originals.
