Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this outrageous parody of a survival guide, Saturday Night Live staff writer Brooks prepares humanity for its eventual battle with zombies. One would expect the son of Mel Brooks to have a genetic predisposition to humor, and indeed, he does, and he exhibits it relentlessly here: he outlines virtually every possible zombie-human encounter, drafts detailed plans for defense and attack and outlines past recorded attacks dating from 60,000 B.C. to 2002. In planning for that catastrophic day when "the dead rise," Brooks urges readers to get to know themselves, their bodies, their weaponry, their surroundings and, just in case, their escape routes. Some of the book's more amusing aspects are the laughable analyses Brooks proposes on all aspects of zombiehood, and the specificity with which he enumerates the necessary actions for survival-i.e., a member of an anti-zombie team must be sure to have with him at all times two emergency flares, a signaling mirror, daily rations, a personal mess kit and two pairs of socks. Comic, though unnecessarily exhaustive, this is a good bet for Halloween gag gifts and fans of Bored of the Rings-esque humor. 100 line drawings.

My best friend lent me this 17 years ago when we worked together. I began to read it and, for whatever reason, just put it away.

I just finished Mel Brooks's "All About Me." Mel mentions, and I had NO idea, that the author, Max Brooks, was his son!

I went downstairs to find another book and what basically jumps out at me? "The Zombie Survival Guide." It is not in the most pristine condition; certainly not as my friend lent it to me.

I decided to surprise him with not only the book, but the buried memory that I could now return the book he let me borrow so many years ago. He had forgotten all about it and, when I laid my memories on him, we both got a great laugh out of it.

Warning! Do not read this book, thinking it an actual compendium of survival tips,in case of any contact or attack by the "undead."

He may not have purposely intended this to be as funny as it it, but, it's Mel Brooks's son...How can one not read thus as what it's meant to be, a tongue-in-cheek compilation of survival tips, just in case of a zombie outbreak.

The zombie survival guide provides much of the information that a normal survival guide would, commenting frequently about the dangers of humans in a post-apocalyptic or at least lawless world, as well as the dangers of the environment itself.

The zombie information is in fact interwoven with this, rather than standing alone, which I find refreshing and helpfully immersive. The sections about the book that are specifically about zombies aren't bad either, though I found the "science" behind zombies to be painful to read. As most zombie stories start without a cause, I almost feel as if the book would have benefited without that section.

Besides that little quibble though, I'm impressed at how much knowledge is packed into this little volume. The author went above and beyond the call of normal research in writing the book, accurately representing many professions from the military to language interpretation services. The author also represents different environments well, and has a decent grasp of different cultures in the world when he portrays them in the recorded zombie outbreaks.

This is a definite winning companion to World War Z. Gifters should consider getting the two as a set, because they truly do complete each other, the guide supporting the stories of World War Z with much-needed tactical information, while the stories of World War Z allow the reader to see what sacrifices and advances allowed the guide to come to fruition.

As far as alternative histories go, the two books together create a far more immersive experience than any book I've read, and beat out all zombie films/games I've seen as well.

A note: while basing normal survival on the Zombie Survival Guide may get you further than common sense would, it is no replacement for a real survival guide. As accurate and well-researched as it is, you should not depend on your zombie-obsessed family member for survival information from this book in a real-life crisis such as a hurricane or an earthquake.

Perhaps the greatest quality of this book is its ability to never slip out of its sober mask. At no point does Max Brooks entertain the notion that this is fiction. He treats his subject matter with the kind of practical seriousness one might expect from a military manual. This makes it very charming and, ironically, hysterical.

The guide is filled with accurate information on basic survival and preparation. MB obviously spent a lot of time studying pre-Y2K survival manuals. It covers everything from which weapons are best suited to zombie defense, to what must be done to ensure survival in a home/school/government building/apartment. There're articles on vehicle choices, armor options, methods of defense and attack, crisis management in light of a zombie outbreak, and the "true" cause of zombies. Max Brooks even goes so far as to dispel all the misinformation provided to us by pop culture, Hollywood, and legends. There are also great bits on firearms, types of arms and armor available, and practical advice on how to start life anew.

What really seals the deal, though, is the collection of incident reports at the back of the book. Fictional, of course, but if you didn't know better, you'd think MB was dead serious. This compilation of supposed "zombie encounters" are as Van Dam as the rest of the book.

Plus, it comes in a nice Quality Paperback form with a rustic para-military cover design and great faded fonts.

Sober, lakonic, and vastly entertaining, this one is worth buying new and reading several times. Purchase it, read it twice, then stick it in your hiking pack, 'cause you never know when zombies will shamble up to your door. You might have to make a break for it, and when you do you'll want this guide on-hand to provide you with all the necessities to stem the tide of the living dead.

Excellent book with very few oversights and characterised by clear, logical thinking. Maybe it’s an English thing (Remember Agincourt! “V”) but for skull splitting, close combat, hand to hand weaponry you just can’t top the ol’ mediaeval War Hammer. So lethal that even the armoured knights wanted them banned for being “unchivalrously” efficacious. Also, much easier to get hold of, than the WW1 Trench Spike. My only other point is not a criticism, but I was very disappointed to find out that in reality zombies bore no memory of their previous habits. Part of my escape & evasion plan involved heading for a nearby vegetarian community. In the worst case scenario of an infection taking hold, I was hoping to be surrounded by zombies who would be chronically conflicted by their former dietary habits, thus rendering them reluctant to eat me, only to ultimately stagnate in a state of deep unresolved depression. Oh well, plan B, then! PS. When getting a nightsight for your gun, remember to go for Image Intensifying rather than thermal. Zombies have a rotten heat signature (literally!).
