So along with the recipes, you’ll find step-by-step how-tos about the healthiest, most taste-enhancing cooking techniques; lists of kitchen essentials; and simple ingredient swaps that maximize flavor, while cutting fat and calories, plus you’ll read motivational SparkPeople success stories from members who have gone through life-changing transformations.
In addition, you’ll find:
· Results from the SparkPeople “Ditch the Diet” Taste Test, which proves that you don’t have to eat tasteless food to lose weight.

About the authors

Stepfanie Romine is a journalist turned cookbook author, health coach and yoga teacher who has lived and cooked on three continents. After spending a year teaching English in South Korea and later discovering Ashtanga yoga, she turned her passion for health and wellness into a career.
Stepfanie has worked as editorial director for an online healthy living community, and as a copywriter and recipe developer for an herbal products manufacturer. Today she is a freelance editor and writer, specializing in plant-based nutrition and natural health and wellness, and she also teaches yoga and cooking classes.
Stepfanie was introduced to mushrooms during her time abroad. Then in 2012, she and her husband moved to the mountains of North Carolina to prioritize healthy living. A temperate rainforest with unparallelled biodiversity, Asheville and the surrounding area is a mecca for natural health, and Stepfanie dove right in, learning about herbal medicine, foraging for plants and mushrooms and soaking up as much information about the natural world as possible. Having followed a plant-based diet since 2010, Stepfanie felt drawn to natural and herbal medicine, including the healing power of mushrooms.
Stepfanie is an experienced registered yoga teacher, and she is also an ACE certified health coach and fitness nutrition specialist. She has completed courses in herbal supplements and holistic and integrative nutrition and is working toward a certification in functional movement.
Stepfanie cooks healthy, seasonal, plant-based meals (with plenty of medicinal mushrooms) to fuel her active life and her husband’s long-distance road cycling. Stepfanie is the co-author of three books, including The No Meat Athlete Cookbook. She and her husband have three cats. Find her online at www.theflexiblekitchen.com

Honesty this is the BEST cook book I have ever bought in my life, I kid you not! I love cook books, so yeah, the island in my kitchen in the cabinet it is filled with cook books. I just love this cook book. It is filled with all kinds of information which will help you live a healthier lifestyle, and all kinds of good recipes!!! Sparkpeople being as they are, they just give you more great stuff than other companies do. I have found stuff in this cook book that I have never seen in other cook books like: on page 25 there is a large section devoted to cooking low fat food that tastes great. It is filled with helpful ways to turn any recipe into a low fat lower calorie meal. Sparkpeople call this section, The Love Your Food, Lose the Weight Cooking School. Also there are many recipes which suggest other side dishes to add to the meal to make it a complete dinner. Each recipe has nutritional information per serving such as, fiber, protein, total carbs, calories, sodium, cholesterol, & total fat.
WHAT I LOVE :
Why do I love the Sparkpeople Cook Book- love your food and lose weight?:
* This cook book is dedicated to us! It says,"To SparkPeople members everywhere, and anyone who thought they had to give up the food they love to be healthy."
* I just LOVE that in each recipe they tell you how big one serving size is, so you know without a doubt just how big/small one serving size REALLY is. For example on page 231 for the recipe, Tuna Noodle Casserole (which is 307 calories per serving and looks and sounds great!) makes 4 servings and each serving is 1 1/2 cups.
* I love the suggestions they give you on how to create a shopping list. I hate to shop for groceries. Sometimes the thought of creating a list is enough to just put it off one more day. In appendix D on page 413 there is a section called, Create a Healthy Shopping List- 4 Easy Steps. Let me tell you it's great!
* Once you start cooking the recipes the calories for each meal can be tracked by using your food tracker. This can be accomplished by using your food tracker by entering the name of the recipe in the recipe finder box within the recipe tab. By using the recipe tab on the food tracker page (nutrition page) you can save time entering endless nutrition information- a real rime saver!
* At the end of the book Sparkpeople has given you 8 pages to write notes. I often read cook books and then jot down the recipes I want to try in the future, what a great place to do this!
* Another wonderful feature I feel many people will enjoy is in appendix F on page 425 is called, 25 Great Good Cheap Foods.
* Last but not least, when you buy this cook book Sparkpeople will give you 500 goodie points! Christmas is just 3 months away, what a great gift to buy someone. I am buying this book for my sister 'cause I know she is gonna love it too!
The many features of this cook book could create a 1,000 word review. If you want a cook book that satisfies your every desire I highly recommend that you buy this book. I believe you will not regret it!
I thought though that the "slim it down" tips were sometimes a bit extreme. For instance, Lemon Chicken with Spinach Pasta has the suggestion to "skip the pasta" to slim this recipe down. I also was disappointed to see the recipe for "Dark Chocolate Angel Food Cake with Rich Chocolate Glaze" starts with a "box of angel food cake mix". I didn't see any other recipes that weren't done from scratch, though.
The pictures of many of the recipes are also helpful and appetizing.

IT IS FANTASTIC! I completely love it! They give you loads of information up front about cooking and getting things ready and why it's ok to add butter to recipes (hoorah!). The recipes themselves range from super easy to slightly more complex, but still do-able and each one so far has been delicious and I've had no flops! A few things that stand out about the book for me:
- I have made some of the recipes more than once (quite rare for me)
- They really ARE delicious - many of the recipes taste better than what I normally cook
- My husband hasn't noticed we're on diet (well, I've told him, but he keeps saying how good our food is)
- Portion sizes are reasonable...no skimping... but they're also not big but with no flavour (there are no undressed salads here!)
- I enjoy batch cooking and there are great suggestions about what to freeze and even a 2-week batch cook plan that shares ingredients
- We've saved a bit of money on the weekly shop using the batch cooking plan
Downsides:
- The usual conversion from Fahrenheit to Celcius, ounces to grams etc... although there is a very detailed conversion table at the back of the book
- I don't have all the tools they suggest (e.g. mixers), but these are probably standard for most homes, and I have been able to work around them
- Hmm.. can't really think of any others!
So - all in all - it's great book and I highly recommend it!
