A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERAS SEEN ON NATIONAL PUBLIC TELEVISION      We’ve been led to believe that when we get sick, it’s our genetics. Or it’s just bad luck—and doctors alone hold the keys to optimal health. For years, Lissa Rankin, M.D., believed the same. But when her own health started to suffer, and she turned to Western medical treatments, she found that they not only failed to help; they made her worse. So she decided to take matters into her own hands.     Through her research, Dr. Rankin discovered that the health care she had been taught to practice was missing something crucial: a recognition of the body’s innate ability to self-repair and an appreciation for how we can control these self-healing mechanisms with the power of the mind. In an attempt to better understand this phenomenon, she explored peer-reviewed medical literature and found evidence that the medical establishment had been proving that the body can heal itself for over 50 years.     Using extraordinary cases of spontaneous healing, Dr. Rankin shows how thoughts, feelings, and beliefs can alter the body’s physiology. She lays out the scientific data proving that loneliness, pessimism, depression, fear, and anxiety damage the body, while intimate relationships, gratitude, meditation, sex, and authentic self-expression flip on the body’s self-healing processes.     In the final section of the book, you’ll be introduced to a radical new wellness model based on Dr. Rankin’s scientific findings. Her unique six-step program will help you uncover where things might be out of whack in your life—spiritually, creatively, environmentally, nutritionally, and in your professional and personal relationships—so that you can create a customized treatment plan aimed at bolstering these health-promoting pieces of your life. You’ll learn how to listen to your body’s “whispers” before they turn to life-threatening “screams” that can be prevented with proper self-care, and you’ll learn how to trust your inner guidance when making decisions about your health and your life.     By the time you finish Mind Over Medicine, you’ll have made your own Diagnosis, written your own Prescription, and created a clear action plan designed to help you make your body ripe for miracles.

Lissa Rankin, M.D., New York Times bestselling author of Mind Over Medicine and The Fear Cure, is a physician, speaker, founder of the Whole Health Medicine Institute, and spiritual seeker. Passionate about what makes people optimally healthy and what predisposes them to illness, she is on a mission to merge science and spirituality in a way that not only facilitates the health of the individual; it also heals the collective. As she became aware of how fear dominates modern culture and how such fear predisposes us not only to unhappiness but to disease, she began researching ways to befriend fear so we can let it heal and liberate us, opening us up to greater compassion, not just for others, but for ourselves. Lissa has starred in two PBS specials and also leads spirituality workshops, both online, as well as at retreat centers like Esalen, Kripalu, and Omega. When doing what she can to sprinkle pixie dust on a fear-based culture, Lissa loves to hike, ski, and dance. Read her blog and learn more at LissaRankin.com.

Here is my brief story :
After years of undiagnosed illness occurring off and on, I was faced with being put on anti-depressants for my newest illness, visceral (gut-brain) hypersensitivity.

This was a wake up call. Anti-depressants are absolutely necessary in some severe cases of depression, compulsion and so on. It was a wake up call because I realized I was scared to go on anti depressants because I would be forced to face the realty that my thinking and beliefs were the cause of my pain and anxiety. If the anti depressants worked then by definition I was literally making myself sick and I would have to admit this at some point.

However this book opened my heart to what my gut (not literally as referred to above) always knew: There are many factors in my life that are preventing me from relaxing and returning to my normal state of being, which is a state of healing.

My entire life has been lived in such a self-critical, self-doubting and self-hating way. I was too far gone to even realize it. This book made me realize that yes, indeed my state of mind was affecting my health. My thoughts, feelings and attachments to my living situation, finances, success, failure, parental relationships, partner relationships were constantly triggering my stress responses. No doctor had ever told me, as human beings aside from stress responses we also have RELAXATION responses that are triggered. This is simple yet life-changing information. Needless to say, I have been on a personal journey of self-compassion and relaxation. My pain is gone and I have a completely new outlook and attitude.

This book will change your life if you suffer from hypochondria, depression, anxiety, compulsive behavior, etc. It is written with such compassion and love. I found this book at the library and I have now purchased my own copy to re-read and highlight all the incredible information presented. This book has deeply resonated with me and I hope it is required reading for all doctors at some point.

Thank you Dr. Rankin for writing this very necessary book. Always grateful.

This cutting-edge book is unique in its mission--the author (a conventional medical doctor who has left her mainstream practice in order to assist people in healing holistically) has wildly succeeded in her attempt to prove scientifically that in so many ways we can heal ourselves. The book is unique because its approach is not woo-woo or only anecdotally-based, but grounded in science and in studies from mainline medical journals. This is not an academic or scholarly book, however; it is accessible for any reader and will especially appeal to those who want concrete ways based on sound medical research to embark upon their own healing, even if they are staying within conventional (allopathic) medicine.

The book is endorsed by Christiane Northrup, MD; life coach Martha Beck; Bernie Siegel, MD; shame researcher Brene Brown, PhD; Larry Dossey, MD; and others such as Anita Moorjani, Danielle Laporte, SARK, and Chris Guillebeau. If you like and respect these authors, you will most certainly enjoy this book immensely.

The author has developed a new wellness model that she has details in the last part of the book. Her talents as a physician and a type of life coach have merged in this model. It looks to be very useful. Just from working through it in the book, the reader can develop her/his own personal health plan.

The author does not disparage conventional doctors or allopathic medicine even when she points out their flaws, but advocates that all practitioners work together as part of the patients' health care team.

Some topics covered include: meditation, current research on optimism and happiness, workaholism, community, spontaneous remission, the placebo effect, the nocebo effect, limiting beliefs, and so much more. These are not the same things you've read everywhere else, either--if you care about this area of study and are a healer, you will want to own this book.

The book can be useful to those who are struggling with illness (as the author herself did), those who are well, practicing medical professionals (ah, if only more would read this!), and those who work with mind-body interactions (which should be all healers of any type). I especially recommend it to readers like myself who are life coaches working with advanced mind-body tools who want an accessible explanation for why their modality works--who want an explanation of how--exactly--the mind creates emotions--the book is worth it for that information alone.

The only way I can think of that this book could be improved upon is if it had an index...though my copy is highlighted and self-indexed with notes, and I have a feeling that yours will be the same!

Highly recommended.

An excellent read, especially if you have received a diagnosis that your doctor says you have to do only their special treatment. Also some doctors are just treating you without any real caring for you.

This book reminds us that we all have immune systems to help us and there is a way to get it started if it lets us down.

Read this book and you will increase your confidence about healing yourself and how to identify the right doctor for each of us.
One doctor told me that doctors are human also and base their decisions on what they have learned. So in way they are guessing at the best treatment. The doctor says when we have starting problem with our car and go to a mechanic, he is guessing also, it is our regulator, our battery, our fan belt, etc, etc. Doctors guess also. So find a doctor who cares about and is the "best guesser" in your opinion.

I was ready to show this to my G.P. - until I read Dr. Lisa Rankin's blog! That took away a great deal of her credability and professionalism! Was amazed that she would write about herself in such a crude way. She undertook a huge job w/going over the tremendous amount of studies and research in order to organize/prepare/& write Mind Over Matter. That deserves a great deal of credit & consideration. I thought it was worthy of discussing w/my doctor. But now I have lost faith in her professional attitude to quite a degree, and I don't think doctors would take her seriously enough. Also, I am not pleased w/the cover of the book showing a "sexy-looking broad" instead of the caring, concerned woman doctor I think she actually is. Certainly a book of considerable merit & a great help.

I truly like her writing, to the point, clear and meaningful. This book confirms what I believe all along. I would recommend this book to anyone who is willing to accept the challenge of taking responsibility for the majority of their illnesses and how they can really take part in their own healing. How much do we really want to be healthy and how much we can contribute to it as much as we want to. She also includes great ideas and a special program that anyone can follow.
Love the humor. Thank you Lissa!
