About the Author

Kelly Brogan, M.D., is a holistic psychiatrist, author of the New York Times best-selling book A Mind of Your Own and the children's book A Time for Rain, and co-editor of the landmark textbook Integrative Therapies for Depression. She completed her psychiatric training and fellowship at NYU Medical Center after graduating from Cornell University Medical College and has a B.S. from M.I.T. in Systems Neuroscience. She is board-certified in psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, and integrative holistic medicine and is specialized in a root-cause resolution approach to psychiatric syndromes and symptoms. She is a certified KRI Kundalini Yoga teacher and a mother of two.

Loving every page of this book! From her science based facts about our mental health crisis, to her intuitive insight, to her personal stories about her interactions with the very gifted Dr. Nicolas Gonzales, Dr. Kelly Brogan has helped me and my family tremendously reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Her words and diet protocol send signals of safety to our auto-immune systems. Helping me and all of us gain calm. Her honesty is so piercing. Her Vital Mind Reset program works and this book helps personalize just how well it can work for anyone looking for an alternative to the trappings of pharmaceutical drugs and traditional psychiatry. The author did a great job really exposing her purpose writing this book and the criticism she’s received from the scientific community for her current views on health. I’ve followed her in the past and was very excited getting this book. It did not disappoint and it gave me the courage to rethink my habits.

I’m fascinated by people who have evolved away from their conventional training to advocate for an entirely different way of being, because there’s always an interesting story behind that journey – a series of experiences that has led that person away from consensus and informed a new, often hard-earned, world view. And so it is with holistic psychiatrist Dr Kelly Brogan and her work. And to me, that’s worth taking notice of. I feel immense relief when I come across books from intelligent, credible thought leaders like this, who question the status quo, and have the courage to speak up, to lead us towards a new paradigm.

If you’re not interested in this book then don’t buy it, it’s not for you. But if there is even the smallest kernel of interest piqued inside you by this - by the idea that if you’re sick you’re not actually broken, that there’s much to learn from any ‘symptoms’, and that what we know as ‘mental illness’ can, in fact, bring you to the light, and away from the darkness, then I urge you to buy this book and read it. There is much wisdom in these pages, coming from someone who was once prescribing the very medicines she now fascilitates people to leave behind.

But the lessons in this book aren’t just for those of us who have experienced mental health issues. This is about becoming the adult we’ve been looking for outside of ourselves for our whole lives. And there are rich rewards for us along the way, in terms of self-knowledge, self-love, joy and contentedness, and the ripple effect our more complete selves will inevitably have on those around us. Loved this book, and I know I’ll refer to it often.

I wish I could give this more then 5 stars! I also wish I had found this book years ago when I was coming off medication. I had to do it alone since my psychiatrist refused to help and it was absolute hell. I got through it, but this book would have helped a lot. If you're considering getting on or off SSRIs this is the book you need to read. It's so empowering!
Even though I was already through all that this book was still wonderful and helped me with finding a better mindset and ways to heal. This book set off a wonderful chain reaction with me. Now I'm eating healthier, losing weight, enjoying my life more, and trying new things like reiki and ecstatic dance. I'm also feeling the best I have in years.
If you're struggling with mental health problems you should definitely try this book. The power to heal is in your hands, you just have to realize it and that's really what this book is about.

I'm a real proponent of only using medication when it is absolutely necessary so I really agreed with Ms. Brogan about her beliefs and research of the problems with highly prescribed medications. Not only have I seen heartbreaking side effects on others but myself as well. I think this is the most important undiscussed problem right now in the medical field. I also really have been helped more with using meditation, dietary changes and cognitive behavioral therapy than the dozens of medications I have used. Where I have a problem with this book is the all or nothing cult like approach to getting well. I dislike when the 'story' can become that you didn't have enough 'faith' so you don't get well and that's what I felt the book became. If you follow the 'rules' enough it will work for you. I also have a problem with the author's idealized beliefs around germ theory. If you look at history and what the world was like before that theory you will realize it saved millions of people. She lost me at this point I'm afraid. Then she spoke about how few people stay within their current relationships. If she knows that it is rare that this happens, perhaps she should look at the way she approaches her therapy. There is a way we can change and become our real self while creating a new life with the person we chose to spend our life with. I will take the great advice I received and leave the rest - to become the best me because I don't believe in all or nothing. ;)

I am an avid reader--but an awful reviewer. In fact, this may be the first review I have ever written. That alone should give you some idea of how much this book impacted me. But before I review Own You Self, there is a back story that I should share first. I picked up Kelly Brogans first book "A Mind of Your Own" about 3 years ago. I think I may have bought it for a friend that wanted to get off anti-depressants. The book sat on her shelf for about a year--then she gave it back to a few months ago. I decided to finally read it myself. Then I decided to give the diet protocol a try. Mind of Your Own is the Road Map for Kelly Brogan's entire protocol. I began to feel better within a few days, and so I committed to 30 days of self care that included Kundalini Meditation, Yoga and a higher fat gluten/sugar free diet etc. I have never stayed on any program for more than a couple weeks max. But I felt so much better I could not quit. Chronic life long digestive issues were resolving, my stress and anxiety plummeted, I was sleeping better. In all fairness, a lot of people on a low carb or keto diet will experience many these benefits initially, but KB takes it to an entirely new level. If you are really ready to experience true healing the key is committing to the whole entire program. That is where the magic is. After 25 days I was a woman on fire and I bought Own Your Self because I wanted to see what else and where else this beautiful wise woman would be taking us. What else could she possibly have to say? Tuns out she had a lot more to say. I didn't want the book to end. I felt as though KB was my best girlfriend by now. The bestie that we all want. But more--she is healer in every sense and her desire to share her knowledge so that we can not only heal ourselves but other as well. There was very little overlap and a whole lot of new, radical ideas that much of the world may not be ready to hear--but the whole world needs to.

Give your body-soul and mind the best gift ever and buy her book(s) and try her program. I am going to start reading them again for a second time--and that's another thing I have never done before.

This book is easily one of the greatest personal development and self-improvement books of all time. Let me keep it concise and to the point. You haven't read something like this in your life before. Never ever! It requires courage, willpower, fortitude and of course vision to write a book of this magnitude. The supremely talented writer Dr. Kelly Brogan puts her skills to best use. If at all there's a shred of doubt whether Dr. Kelly Brogan is the best in the world of writing, all you have got to do is read this book "Own Your Self: The Surprising Path Beyond Depression, Anxiety, and Fatigue to Reclaiming Your Authenticity, Vitality, and Freedom". An outstanding book written with ferocious enthusiasm. A must-read for all those who love to read great books. You owe it to yourself to read this book. If you do not, and you have grandchildren, you should explain to them why you decided not to. This book is excellent. It is always risky taking a stand against the mainstream narative. Huge respect for loving people and the planet enough to go against the flow and empower people to reclaim their health and healing. At the end of the day, pharacology may need to be part of your solution, but only when you're properly informed of possible side effects, or the undesired worsening of your condition caused by the prescription meds, and only after other solutions have been sought. I recommend all psychologists and doctors read this.
