- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2008Although this little book doesn't dig deep enough into why this former beauty queen has become a symbol of hope, I think it is a good springboard into a discussion of how a fighting mom can take on the "political class" of all talk - no action men. Too many politicians got into it for the wrong reason. Obviously, this tough lady got into politics for the right reasons.
While I'm sure that very few families in our country would qualify as "pioneer" households, this is a family that many would like to identify with. She certainly is a role model for young girls who have too few positive images among the current class of celebrities.
I imagine that when someone asks her why she hasn't been more widely travelled internationally, she'll probably say something like: "It takes a lot of money to travel the world, and frankly, my family has not been in a position to take a lot of European vacations, etc." However, I think she would probably also say that she is willing to spend as much time traveling the world and brushing up on foreign policy as a President McCain asks her to.
She could certainly say that as long as McCain is filling the office of President, she'll have free reign and plenty of time to brush up on the foreign areas she needs to. This is not a luxury that a President Obama would have, since he would have no time at all to get ready for the task for which he has no executive experience whatsoever.
One should never underestimate the power of solid, ethical character. Someone who has made all the right moral choices in her life, especially a mother who has a child in harm's way, is not likely to make bad decisions when it comes to decisions that can affect "world peace"... after all, that's what all beauty queens want in their hearts (LOL).
Seriously, though, this little book gave me hope that there still are nuclear families in America. Families that understand what hard work and right living are all about.
This book makes clear that Sarah Palin is a force to be reckoned with. I wouldn't underestimate her, whether I was Paul Begala or Vladimir Putin.
By the way, Vladimir Putin would probably fear her, since Sarah Palin knows about as much about energy politics as any person in America. She is not afraid to play hardball when necessary.
I want to see much more meaty tome about not just this mom from the sticks, but about all those "hockey moms" and "soccer moms" who REALLY make this country work. This book is at least a good start.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2010outstanding in all respects. How different growing up in Alaska is. I did feel in reading the book that she was not realizing that it was her responsibility to speak up as a candidate and not be lead around by the McCain campaign. She should have let them know right on that she was her own person and would control what she did and if that was not good enough for them then they should not put her on the ticket. She took a back seat as a candidate and she should take responsibility for letting that happen. But a great honest book and I think even this shows her honesty as a writer. it was great to read this and also Laura Bush's biography as it really is a great contrast in lives of two great women.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2008Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska, is what Donald Trump would call "A Phenom." Frequently mentioned as a potential Vice President for the Republican ticket, she has energy, youth, and principle on her side. Her grass-roots effort to upset the entrenched and corrupt Alaskan political establishment is nothing short of amazing. She is a no-apologies conservative Republican intent on bringing accountability to government. Efforts to label her as a lightweight have backfired as she has out-maneuvered, out-talked, out-flanked, and soundly beaten her political opponents at every turn, much to their dismay that she doesn't play by their self-serving rules. Immensely popular, she is, in short, a breath of fresh Alaskan air blowing from the North.
This biography details Sarah's early life and upbringing and family and covers her early political career up to the time she is elected to the office of Governor. It's an interesting read, almost breathlessly optimistic. For those who savor details of Sarah Palin's life, this is a first step. However, it is painful to say, but though Sarah Palin has proven beyond doubt that she is no lightweight, this book, at less than 150 pages of actual text, is. It lacks any critical depth and leaves wide gaps in background information on the campaigns and issues involved. We learn about government-Big Oil collusion and corruption, but in only a few sentences. The chapter on former governor Frank Murkowski's downfall is a shy two pages long. In many ways the book serves as a pretty good hors d'oeuvre, but we are left starving for the main course, for analysis, critique, and depth of field. One gets the impression it may have been rushed to print in time for the election.
Frankly, I would be happy to support Sarah Palin for Vice President on a McCain/Palin ticket. I think she's up for the job, though Alaskans would be loathe to lose her. But she deserves a more in-depth biography than this happy-talk effort. I still recommend this book. It's all we have, and the color pictures are really good!
Update: August 29th. Well ain't that sweet. I wrote this review in April and here we are: Sarah Palin for Vice President. It's a great day!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2008This was one of the most interesting autobiography of a real person I have ever read. It totally confirmed my first opinion of Sarah in that she is one of the most gifted people I have ever seen. She is her own person and was brought up so much like myself with God, family, self-worth, truth, and love for her fellow man and country. I cannot say enough about her as a mother and wife, either. She proves what most of us women know--that you can be a good working mom and wife. She has the partner that helps her be this type of person. Without a good man for a husband and supporter she could not do the work that I feel God has sent her to do. One thing more--she knows from where her strength and talent come from--God. So many people try to take Him out of their lives. Sarah isn't afraid. She is a breath of fresh air and I am glad McCain chose her for his running mate.

This book was really not that interesting or helpful. I didn't learn very much from it at all.
