Most of this guide book is devoted to an exhaustive catalog of New York City history, beginning with glaciers' impact on the geography of Central Park and ending (161 chapters later) with the aftermath of 9/11. Not for cover-to-cover reading, this guide from a tour-guide/entrepreneur husband-and-wife team is best approached from behind, with the 14 walking tours that cap the volume; each highlighted site references the relevant chapters preceding. Considering New York's dense history, these tours offer something for everyone: the Greenwich Village tour alone encompasses the Stonewall Inn, considered the birthplace of gay rights; Jefferson Market Courthouse, the nation's first night court; and the house where Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women. Not even natives know this much; even if they do recall the late-19th and early-20th century tenement laws meant to improve living conditions (chapter 84), they'll probably be surprised to learn where the city's first tenement is located (chapter 32). A wonderful resource for Big Apple Greeters

As a Big Apple Greeter, I have found this history of New York City to be an invaluable aid in educating myself and entertaining my guests. The great majority of visitors want to walk, and there is so much history here. I've become much better in my volunteering as a result of studying -- and enjoying -- this wonderful collection of stories.nd

Two cautions:

-- This book is primarily, almost exclusively, about Manhattan -- the four outer boroughs are really not covered as a practical matter.

-- The ebook version has many cross references, but my copy did not link, a serious failing, and I had to return it to Amazon. Be prepared to do the same if you take a chance on that version. A shame, really, because I would like to carry a version with me on my walks with visitors. As a substitute, I have the wonderful The Encyclopedia of New York City: Second Edition in the Kindle version on my iPhone.

Packed with fascinating facts and stories of NYC history

This has long been one of my favorite books about New York City. It can be read as either a reference book or as a kind of narrative history. I bought the hard copy years ago, read it two or three times, and recently purchased the e-version so I'd have it while travelling. I just returned from a week in NY and referred to it numerous time. Highly recommended.

I love my hometown

I was born and raised in NY and I love it so much. There's so much history everywhere. I can walk down a street in some parts and just "see" how it was to walk down that same street 100 years ago.

I first got the kindle version, but did not find it to be very useful. You need to flip back and forth sometimes in the book because there are maps and such. So I got the paperback and I love it. Very informative book on NYC history and the famous people who helped built this city.

Update: After reading some of the reviews it seems some tourists have bought this book as a means to sightseeing. If you plan on doing that I would highly recommend you get another book specifically for that purpose. This book is not a travel guide, but more of a history book and the maps and such are only there to supplement the telling of the history of this great city. However this can make a great supplement to a travel guide if you are a tourist. I am a NY native, but I learned a lot from this book. For example, I learned that the reason "Wall Street" is named such is because back in the late 1600's there was a literally a big wall there! Built to protect New Yorkers from British colonists and it was built by a collaboration of NY volunteers, residents and black african slaves. Perhaps this rare culture of black slaves working side by side with free men was the reason why in the 1700's "The New York Manumission Society" was founded... which was a group of white males who thought slavery was ungodly and wrong and they fought to abolish it. This society also founded a school specifically meant to educate the children of black slaves so that they could grow up to compete in the market place as free adults. All this and more happened right here in NY! I walked these streets for years not understanding their meaning and now I do.

If you're in New York and are lucky to take a walking tour with James Nevius, it will be the best one you'll ever have. Of the dozens of tours we've taken over the years, the skyscraper tour with James still stands out as the best. We are very seasoned New York visitors, ex-pat New Yorkers, actually, always looking for things we can do with family and friends to keep the visits fresh. James and Michelle have written a wonderful, comprehensive book, that's almost as good as having them walking beside you. They are incredibly knowledgable. Highly recommended!

Deep History of Buildings You Pass Everyday

Great history of the good and the bad of NYC. One, however, needs to really enjoy history to appreciate the deep historical context provided regarding unassuming buildings throughout the city. For me, the pre-colonial history in the beginning of the book (although informative), moved slowly because there was no present, still standing buildings to reference, but the more modern history (regarding current NYC landmarks and buildings) was extremely fascinating. Would also be a great walking tour guidebook for the history lover who thinks they "know it all" about NYC.

Interesting History of New York City

New York City is the most populous city in the United States and has a history that goes back about 400 years. Over that time, New York has changed a great deal to become probably the most ethnically diverse place in the world and a host of different architecture on its streets.

The book itself is mainly a look at Manhattan's history focusing mainly on the history surrounding its buildings and other locations. The idea of the book was to write about places that can still be visited today. There are stories of New York's most famous places such as Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Terminal, the Empire State Building, Ellis Island, along with many others.

Even though the book stays mostly in Manhattan, I found the information in it to be absolutely fascinating. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of New York City.

I really enjoyed this book. I, like most other people that pick up this book, wanted to learn more about the city I live in. There is so much history packed into this small island that I can't even remember half of what I read. But you remember facts that were most interesting to you and those relevant to the neighborhoods that you frequent. I will probably reread this again eventually to try to actually learn more and commit to memory!
