- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2014I am only now starting to realize, with the help of this book, that all the trauma I've sustained in my lifetime is mostly to blame for several of my current issues. This book, wrote in simple and easy to understand terms, opened my eyes to the fact that trauma completely changes how your body and mind function and there are MANY more ramifications to it's effects than the very well known flashbacks or anxiety all PTSD sufferers are known for.
What I like most about this book is that it gave me hope that with these seven simple exercises and a deeper understanding of trauma, I can start helping my own body to heal and let go of the pain I've struggled so hard to get rid of on one hand but held on to so tightly on the other.
If you're looking to make sense of why you feel so helpless, so out of control, so afraid and vulnerable, so moody, etc, etc after a deeply traumatic event, and most of all, you want to help yourself heal and move forward, get this book, do it now!
It's such a short read, yet so amazingly useful. The exercises are so simple and easy, yet the first time I did two of them, I felt a sense of relief that literally put a smile on my face and made me realize that I don't HAVE to stay stuck here forever. I CAN and WILL heal and put the past behind me once and for all.
Best of luck to all of you who live a life so deeply touched by trauma. Enjoy the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2021This book is written in a very easy to understand way - it is not bogged down by technical words or concepts. The exercises are in the last several pages of the book and can be done even if you don’t read the rest of the book. They take me about 35 min to do, and I usually feel energized and emotionally positive and open afterward. One of my favorite things about these exercises compared to other trauma approaches is that you don’t have to dig into your emotional pain to do them, you don’t need to relive your trauma or even think about it at all. I will sometimes just watch tv while I do them, or just breathe and focus on my sensations.
I have been doing the exercises for about 2 weeks now, and I do them 6 days a week. I have noticed small changes, like it seems easier to maintain a positive attitude when something happens that usually upsets me. Or I wake up feeling optimistic, when I usually wake up dreading going to work. I plan to keep doing these long term and may come back after several more months to give a more detailed review if I experience more changes.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2014This was a very easy but informative read. The author takes the TRE concept and really wants you to get it. This is not a book to show you how smart he is but one to help you take action and overcome some trauma and stresses in your life.
I would recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2007I have read several books about healing post traumatic stress disorder, and this is by far the most helpful. Other books, such as Judith Herman's excellent Trauma and Recovery, explain what PTSD is and what its symptoms are, and how a therapist can help her client heal, but this book is a self-help book, in the best sense of the word. It enables a person suffering from PTSD to heal herself.
The first part of the book explains how the brain responds to traumatic experiences, and why humans have a hard time shrugging off trauma, unlike wild animals. ( For more on this subject, see Waking the Tiger, by Levine.) It discusses the various responses to a traumatic experience, including freezing, in addition to the better-known fight or flight response. It demonstrates how a history of trauma in communities leads to cycles of war and violence.
The last part of the book is the most valuable part: the chapter on how to do the trauma releasing exercises. These exercises stress the muscles of the lower body, inducing a shaking or tremor that mimics an animal's natural response to trauma. In the final exercise, you lie on the floor and shake, literally, for up to fifteen minutes. Suffice it to say, you feel better afterwards. A lot better.
I found that I sometimes had some sad feelings about the traumatic events in my life after doing these exercises, but the overwhelming fear and rage were gone. And I felt more like being with other people. This parallels Herman's model of the three stages of recovery: safety, then mourning, then reintegration into one's community. The trauma releasing exercises accelerate the first stage, by a great deal.
This is not to say that you don't have to make sure you're safe. You do. Patriarchy is a dangerous system to live in, and it hurts both women and men. Once you are over your trauma, find ways to stay safe, but keep these exercises in your medicine cabinet.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2019What I expect of every book is to not only explain something in theory,in a simple way.. I want a book to give me practical value, I want something effective that I can practice, every day, and shift the quality of my life to another level.
This book has it all. The author is authentic, competent, compassionate and wise and has earned my respect.
Most of us have been taught, that something has value if it's complicated and tough to pull off. It is time for us to embrace the simplicity. In the book you have necessary theory and then - practice, practice !
I tend to accumulate tension in my body during the day. It happens automatically,I'm not aware of it but then,at the end of the day I have a problem to relax before I go to sleep. Doing this exercises has helped me to fall asleep like a baby :) Something shifts in my body! I also use these exercise when something upsets me during the day. It helps!
Trauma, like tension, also gets accumulated with time, we are not aware of it .. and...this method that the author presents offers you a wonderful, safe practice that actually helps you to finally, release the excess "steam" out of your body. This should be taught in schools, from a very young age, because kids also get stressed and they become anxious adults. God bless the author!

paulette bibeauReviewed in Canada on October 27, 20145.0 out of 5 stars Berceli is doing wonderful work with large groups of trauma victims
The exercises in this book are very effective and perhaps, at first glance, may seem unusual. Dr. Berceli draws from yoga, Ti-chi and bio-energetics. These specific exercises clear the body of unresolved trauma on a biological level. Dr. Berceli is doing wonderful work with large groups of trauma victims. PTSD affects too many people. This is one way to address these issues and move our healing forward.

wadlReviewed in Germany on October 22, 20145.0 out of 5 stars Es funktioniert tatsächlich
