Perfect for Reluctant Readers and Children of All Ages

In 2007, the first volume in a series of children’s books was published. It exploded onto the elementary school scene and got America’s school children reading again. As new books appeared in subsequent years, children snapped them up and devoured them. To them, it was the literary event of the year.

No, this book series was not Harry Potter (published 1997-2007). This new series followed the misadventures of lazy unprincipled undisciplined middle school miscreant Greg Heffley. And school children everywhere ate them up. While the buzz over these books eventually died down, they are every bit as good as when they were first released, and each new addition to the series remains hilarious. If your child is a reluctant reader and/or 8 - 10 years old, definitely get him or her started on the first book! (While the protagonist is a boy, my children are both girls. In my experience with my own and other children, both genders love these books.)

As the title “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” implies, the books are written from Greg’s point of view. Hand drawn pictures abound on every page. The text is so clever that children, adolescents, and adults can all appreciate it. When a new book is released, there is a gentle fight at our house over who gets to read it first. There is one illustration in the first book that was so hilarious that I laughed till I cried. (I won’t spoil it for you with details.) My younger daughter still talks about how Greg’s idiot older brother misspelled the family dog’s name on his personalized dog dish: Sweaty.

Just like with Harry Potter, I recommend that you read the books in order, although each book can certainly stand alone. As I write in early 2019, here are the books currently in the series:

Before we'd made it all the way through the book, Kiddo was reading it on his own and asking for help only when he couldn't pronounce a word or didn't know the meaning. The storylines and writing style are engaging enough that kids want more and adults don't mind. A+!

He was trying to download the sample and instead accidentally clicked the one click purchase button. Luckily I had a gift card in my account so it was not a big deal. If anyone knows how to take off the one click purchase option on kindle PLEASE let me know. It's so easy to make a mistake. Anyway, he read the book and says he really liked it. He loves this series and hopefully I'll be able to afford to get them all for him over time. At least he bought a book he was interested in, right?!

Good, but not as good as the previous 8 books in the series. I can't quite put my finger on what's exactly different about this one, but it just doesn't feel right, almost like there was a guest writer attempting to mimic what made the other books so great, but not quite getting it. Maybe there just weren't enough funny digressions & there was definitely far too much wackiness for my tastes (I can handle zany but refuse to accept wacky or madcap.) Gotta say that I'm still looking forward to book 10 tho.

My son loves these books!! There are about 10 books in the series, and my son was missing 3 of those books, so I bought him the 3 he didn't have to complete his set. The pricing here is really good too for a brand new book. It almost cost the same as going to one of our local used book stores. It's so much nice to pay the same price for a brand new book. My son, loves the story line in each book, and has even tried writing his own version of a diary book! My son is 11, but has been reading these books when he was 8, and even met Jeff Kinney at a book signing! These books are great, wholesome, excellent books, and really appeals to kids of all ages!

He loves the illustrations and all the crazy things that the main character, Greg, and his group of friends say and do. You will absolutely want to add this book to your child's collection if they like reading this series!

This is one of the best reads ever! It is defiantly appropriate for young ages as well as older ones, with clear, bold font, that is easy to read. It has a hard cover back making the book more durable and easy to hold and use. It has an interesting use of colors that are eye catching and stand out, with illustrations throughout the book making it a whole lot more enjoyable experience. The book is a story about Greg heffley and his family going on a road trip. The whole book is hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud many times, and the story defiantly stuck in my head, is is a very memorable book and one of the best reads of my childhood. I will never forget the many times I read this book, a definite recommend, and certainly one of the best books Jeff has ever written!

Every now and again I dip into the Wimpy Kid oeuvre. As a children's librarian I feel I ought to keep up with the things the children are all mad about reading. I usually loathe the Wimpy Kid books, but I have to say that book 9 in the series is not quite as horrible. I think this is because in this volume Gregg actually comes across as a slightly more likeable boy. Instead of being absolutely self centred and completely vile to his 'friends', he takes a trip with his family in which the misfortunes they suffer, such as they are, apply to all of them equally and are more of a series of amusing accidents rather than hideous misunderstandings which blow up when Gregg tries to engineer some situation to his own advantage. A vast improvement.
