- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBrought me back to my early college days. Read: Late adolescence, where anything poetic and French is automatically imbued with a special blend of true love, a lot of sighing, and generally feeling oh, so precious -- of course, without ever realizing that any of this is taking place. You are only young once. But if you do it right, once is enough. Baudelaire is for the ages. Like a well-ripened fromage, start while it is sweet, fresh and soft. Stay with it while it (and you ages); you'll see more, and feel more that you were too blind to see two decades earlier.

I prefer this translation as it preserves the flavor of the original and the translation is as direct as possible.
I give 4 in place of 5 stars for the formatting of the book itself.
I realize doing a true side by side layout would increase the physical size of the volume but the solution chosen by the publisher is indifferent at best.
It looks like they simply printed the text in a run on printout and then cut to page size for binding.
If reformatted with some evidence of care, and something better than the cheapest quality paper, this could be the best volume of Baudelaire available.

Keith DersleyReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 5, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Great Poetry, No Rhymes
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBilingual selection, the English done as prose poetry. This is excellent, as in English the chiming of rhymes goes against the sentiment of these hellishly enjoyable poems. I know the French original rhymes, but that's different. (And Baudelaire did write prose oems also.)

ABCReviewed in Germany on April 28, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Für mich die beste Übersetzung
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIch habe verschiedene Übersetzungen online vergleichen.
