China on Film: A Century of Exploration, Confrontation, and Controversy Paperback – February 28, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
Throughout its long history of film production, China has been embroiled in a seemingly unending series of wars, revolutions, and jarring social transformations. Despite daunting censorship obstacles, Chinese filmmakers have found ingenious ways of taking political stands and weighing in—for better or worse—on the most explosive social, cultural, and economic issues of the day. Exploring the often gut-wrenching controversies generated by their work, Pickowicz offers a unique and perceptive window on Chinese culture and society.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2014The book is great, easy to read, no academic jargon, packed with information, and results from many years of researching and thinking about Chinese cinema. The kindle book, however, can't display page numbers on the MAC kindle reader. For academics who want to quote from the book, it might be better to get the paper version (unless on some kindle readers, the page number issue can be solved).
