    If you are familiar with Theory X or the management styles arising from Fredrick Taylor's work, then you will find Wave Rider to be a very fresh, timely, insightful view of organizational leadership which is both powerful towards generating unprecedented effectiveness and productivity among knowledge workers especially, but any kind of work that requires real collaboration in general. If performance matters to a given organization, then the degree to which everything depends on surmounting impossible odds to reach ultra-high performance, is the degree to which the ideas presented in Wave Rider can make a profound and lasting difference in transforming the cultural fiber of the organization, and the mindsets of those who would be its bold leaders. Beyond this point, you are wasting precious time reading this review and should I either buy Wave Rider and start reading, or take a new approach to saving your organization.

    This is a great, great, great book ... a hug for the great work of Harrison Owen.
    Years ago I started working with Open Space Technology, based on the book of Harrison Owen.
    It was kind of a breakthrough in my work with large groups.
    Mixed with World Café and Appreciative Inquiry ... it's the basis for great work with large groups.

    This book is a great one if you're into self-organizations, adaptive complex systems, dealing with complexity (cfr. CYNEFIN), ...
    The "Reinventing Organizations" book that hypes nowadays must be inspired by this book ... and the companies Frederic Laloux is talking about must have been reading "Waver Rider" ... no doubt.

    The biggest insight ... self-organization is as natural as gravity. I'm a believer ;-)

    I was looking very much forward to reading The Wave Rider by Harrison Owen. Harrison Owen is probably best known for creating Open Space Technology and his wonderful book related to Open Space: Open Space Technology: A User's Guide. The wave rider promises to bring the self-organization of Open Space to organization. Exciting!

    The book consists of two parts: 1) preparing for wave riding, 2) wave rider's guide to the future. The beginning of the first part was excellent. Harrison Owen looks what creates high-performance and comes to the conclusion that high performance and self-organization go hand-in-hand. He takes this a lot further and states that all systems are actually self-organizing, whether we want it or not, and that the amount of control imposed on a self-organizing system will cause it's performance to degrade. He then reflects on his experiences with Open Space and wonders if the same high performance that he has seen in Open Space can be created organizational-wide.

    So far, I was extremely excited about the book! Especially how would it continue and what examples would the author give. What new ideas would he have. I was about to mail everyone that Waverider is a must-read... until I continued.

    After the exciting start, there wasn't much anymore... the author explains Open Space and then takes the practices of Open Space and tries to apply the same ideas to organization. However, this felt (to me) very forced and unnatural, the opposite of what he started with. Also, there isn't anything more than the original principles of Open Space. Not only that, the book becomes incredibly theoretical as there are no examples of how this would actually work... except for examples of Open Space Technology. The author says the work is an forever on-going work and this is just the start... and yeah, I can see how that is true. However, the book provided a very poor start for me and all the excitement I had about the Waverider was gone. In fact, I recalled all my recommendations, except for... read the beginning. It was almost a great book!

    The writing style is pretty ok, though at times a bit verbose and repetitive. There are lots of stories, but the stories are unfortunately almost all about Open Space.

    I give about 5 stars for the first couple of chapters, they were wonderful... but about 2 or less for the continuation. In total, I'd rate this as 3 stars... a good start... not a good finish. If you read it, don't finish it :)

    The quality of Harrison's writing continues to ring true if for no other reason than he is consistently singing the same song. The breath of the topic he is endeavoring to name, define, capture, however you want to call it, is laudable, immense and timeless. So much of the book depends on accepting certain tenets, it borders on axiomatic, it progresses, but the steps are well laid out and revelatory. A fascinating development which you can buy knowing that you have the essence of all previous works present in you hands. Hallelujah.
