Excellent Overview

In this text Jaworski lays out (as best he can) the major arguments within Philosophy of Mind. By giving the major theories and his examples to try and make them clear the book gives any reader a solid base with which to proceed in the field.

While some important thinkers are missing, it is nothing that hurts the books credibility. If you are considering getting into the field, this is the way to go.

I'm a biologist doing an masters in cognitive neuroscience. I was already interested in philosophy of mind, but hadn't had any real proper introduction besides some philosophy papers and youtube (although I did consume a fair share of those). This text is what it says, a very readable introduction that puts you up to date with the current discussions in the topic. What seem to be the main lines of argument for the different mainstream philosophical camps are put forward in a very understandable, yet not condescending fashion (at least for me as a neuroscience student). I would definitely recommend as a first read into the topic, it will give you clear ideas that will help you get into more specific discussions, particularly, some good guidelines on how to locate the different positions in the philosophic landscape. Also, it won't demand a strong mental effort from you, which for a first read, I take as a big plus.

It's all clear to me now!

Philosophy of mind is a huge topic, and I think is at the core of the most fundamental questions we can ask. Does reality consist of matter, or mind, or some mix of the two? God? No God? All of these questions seem to center around the nature of the mind, and so digging into this topic might help resolve the bigger questions, or at least point in the right direction.

But...the topic is huge and a bit difficult for the layman, partially because of the large taxonomy of theories. I've read a few introductory books on the topic, but I was still foggy about a number of things. Especially regarding non-reductive physicalism and property dualism. What is the difference? Some people seem to use them interchangeably. In addition, they split into a number of other theories: emergence, supervenience, realization, and so on.

Finally, this book makes everything clear. It should be a prerequisite before reading any other philosophy of mind articles, since most of those assume a familiarity with the background and history of the topic. After reading this book, I now know exactly what philosophers mean when they say that the mind cannot be reduced to the brain.

No philosophy of mind book is without it's author's biases and leanings towards his favorite theory, and this book is no different. But the good news is that it is clearly delineated. The first two thirds of the book simply lay out all the different theories, and the arguments for and against them. The last portion is about hylomorphism, the author's own favorite theory. So it is more like two books in one. Many other books I've found to consist of the author's case being built from page one, and only going through the other theories in order to show what's wrong with them.

This book is more dry, but in a good and readable way. "Here is what dualism says, here are the arguments for it, and here are the arguments against it...here is what non-reductive physicalism says, and here are the arguments for it, and the arguments against it."

Everything in this dense topic feels clear to me now, and I highly recommend this book as a FIRST book to read if you are interested.

Comprehensive, especially when it comes to the author's pet-theory

From substance dualism, to physicalism, to a variety of alternative approaches like eliminativism and hylomorphism, this book offers a great primer on the major positions in philosophy of mind. Jaworski breaks up the chapters into coherent and easy to follow sub-sections, and sprinkles clarifying diagrams and numbered arguments throughout as an aid to comprehension.

What becomes apparent near the closing of the book is how much priority the author gives to his own pet theory, hylomorphism. While admitting that there are few proponents of this position, and that there is little interaction with it in the academic world so far, Jaworski still decides to devote two very long chapters, over a quarter of the entire book, to his own favorite theory, without mentioning that he happens to be one of its major proponents. This may provide a somewhat misleading view of the field, especially for the undergrads who are likely the audience of the book.

Another minor criticism is how Jaworski characterizes some of the shortcomings of the arguments in the book. He mentions that some arguments are "merely inductive" as if deductive arguments are inherently superior and decisive. This is simply not the case. A valid deductive argument can be much weaker than a strong inductive argument. Deductive arguments often appear decisive because the conclusion necessarily follows from the premises, but the uncertainty is often hidden in the premises. Unless the premises are absolutely certain, a good, valid deductive argument can be just as uncertain in its conclusion as an inductive argument.

Beside the lack of balance and a small technical quibble, Philosophy of Mind offers a solid overview of the arguments in clear language. Certainly worth reading.

The content of this text is excellent. The coverage is complete and accessible, and Jaworski is a model of objectivity. But the book itself is very poorly made; I've been reading mine for a few weeks and I am already using tape to repair the pages falling out of it. For the price of the book, I am certain that Blackwell can afford better glue!

Philosophy of Mind: A Comprehensive Introduction is hands down the single best textbook I've ever had for any of my philosophy courses. This is coming from a philosophy undergrad. The author has a real talent at explaining things. Much better than those useless anthologies that are normally used.
