First Earth Battalion Operations Manual: Reprint of Original Manual from the 70's Paperback – November 6, 2009
Purchase options and add-ons
Sometimes it takes the perspective of history to unmask the true genius of a person, a book or a point of view. Perhaps even more telling, the first attempt to deal with the subject of Jim Channon’s First Earth Battalion was through the vehicle of comedy.
The Men Who Stare at Goats, the movie starring George Clooney did not treat the ideas at the core of the First Earth Battalion with anywhere near the attention they deserve. In fact one could say that the movie trivialized the concept through humor, and marginalized the principals as addled characters.
The true nature of the First Earth Battalion can begin to be appreciated by reading the Operations Manual. A hand illustrated work of art highlighting a new direction for not just the military but the planet as well. The fact that Jim felt the army could take the lead in this matter speaks to his own brand of practical idealism that untold numbers of corporate leaders took advantage of on his retirement from the Army.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2022If you do any background research on Jim Cannon or the First Earth Battalion, you should know that the ideas presented are very "new age". It's still a very interesting read regarding the ideas of the "warrior monk". Very clear and legible print, I'm not sure what other reviews are taking about when they mention "the print being bad and too small to read"?
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2012I think that most people who are drawn to this book will find that much of what it contains has been said elsewhere, but that's good, because it means we're on the right track.
The original book was probably in a different, larger format, so sometimes the text is very small, but all legible.
There are no page numbers, grasshopper, just as a real day has no number.
Well worth a read for all spiritual seekers.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2021Fun read, and a view of a more optimistic if naive time. If only some of this were practiced today, such as searching for common ground and peaceful solutions. "If you want peace, you must invest in peace as much as you invest in war."
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2010I love this book! It blows my mind to think that the US military was so close to operating in a true humanitarian fashion. It gives me hope that we can someday achieve this way of life. This book provides a clear, step-by-step guide to becoming "all that you can be" for the greater good of oneself, one's community, the planet and the universe. It is reverent and practical; disciplined and kind. A great read for anyone on the path of self-improvement or curious about military history.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2013Jim Channon....either he was completely nuts, or completely ahead of his time....I opt for the latter, the U.S. Army wasn't ready for what he had to offer, but maybe they gleaned something useful from it.
The movie "The Men Who Stare at Goats" is a comical look at this part of the military's history, making light of it for sure, but at least offering a perspective that suggests admiration for at least trying things differently with the intention of creating something better than what we had at that time.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2011Being a fan of the movie(men who stare at goats)i ordered this book on line it is probly the best self help book i have read it does send out a great messages and the drawings make it fun and enjoyabale this was a real quick read for me but im sure i wll glance through it again soon i do recomend this book to any one who has a opend mind thank you.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2015For all you "Men Who Stare At Goats" and "Star Wars" fans, this is a must have! Jim Channon was the Original Jedi Master who wrote this beautiful training manual for our troops. I love his perspective and feel it was an honorable and ethical way for our military to conduct it's service to and for the Earth and her people. Insightful and provocative!

NiReviewed in Germany on September 9, 20194.0 out of 5 stars Interessant

PaperbooksforeverReviewed in Italy on September 29, 20134.0 out of 5 stars Quando si dice la creatività
bigbillReviewed in the United Kingdom on March 27, 20135.0 out of 5 stars A good buy
After seeing clooneys glorious performance in "men who stare at goats" i simply had got to get a copy.
yes the smaller format is not really suited for all the text but really are you going to read it?
Im proud to own a replica copy of such a historic piece of writing and as someone who grew up with hippy parents Its like pearing back as an anthropologist.
keep the spirit alive people and be all you can be

Marco SReviewed in Italy on December 15, 20192.0 out of 5 stars oltre le aspettative
Sembrava fosse chissà cosa. Sembra un libro per bambini, dal formato inusuale (è molto lungo e poco largo, quindi di una scomodità imbarazzante). é scritto totalmente in inglese.
