4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 56 ratings

A DIY Prescription for Happiness!

This insightful book from wife-and-husband physicians Carrie and Alton Barron presents an innovative, highly achievable five-part plan to find happiness and alleviate depression and anxiety by tapping into creative potential.

A gifted psychiatrist and a premier hand surgeon, Carrie and Alton Barron draw upon the latest psychological research, a combined forty years of medical practice, and personal experience to demonstrate how creative action is integral to long-term happiness and well-being. The Five-Part Prescription for the Creativity Cure—Insight, Movement, Mind Rest, Your Own Two Hands, and Mind Shift—leads the way to a more meaningful, fulfilling life by simultaneously developing self-understanding and self-expression. With the Barrons’ detailed tools and strategies for cultivating creative outlets, overcoming unconscious fears and barriers to happiness, and linking internal thought to external action, readers will build the mind-set and habits necessary for happiness and positive change. They will experience—and learn how to sustain—the deep satisfaction that accompanies creating something by hand.

The perfect self-help book for our handmade, homemade, crafting culture,
The Creativity Cure has a simple yet profoundly inspirational message: that you can find the authentic, contented life you crave by taking happiness into your own two hands.

1)“Aninvaluable action guide to creating opportunities for greater joy, purpose, andmeaning through self-expression.” ― Library Journal

"
The Creativity Cure is a most welcome addition to the literature on personal and relationship transformation. From working with several thousand couples over the years, Kathlyn and I have become strong proponents of creativity for the transformation of relationships. The same is true for personal transformation: creativity is often the missing piece, the absence of which has been sending distress signals in the form of anxiety and depression. The Drs. Barron have done a marvelous job in bringing this often-hidden factor to light. I highly recommend that you read this book." -- Gay Hendricks, Ph.D., author of Conscious Living and coauthor with Dr. Kathlyn Hendricks, of Conscious Loving

"
The Creativity Cure rocks! The Barrons have written a prescription for happiness. Follow the doctors' orders and you can't help but feel better." -- Peter Criss, founding member of KISS and author of Makeup to Breakup

“The Barrons have outlined a clear and achieveable step-by-step process that allows anyone to not only heal but to unlock our individual road map for a powerful, happy and fulfilling life." -- Bob Woodruff, ABC Correspondent and author of In an Instant

Great Book of Very Practical Steps to Bringing About Peace And Joy in Life
The book is a very easy read and very good information. I work in the mental health field and wish I could get a copy for every single one of my clients! If everyone could read and try even a few of the suggestions this book makes it would solve so many issues so much of our society struggles with and bring peace into lives shattered and battered by all we face in this world. I highly recommend it.

This book is so well written and filled with so many gems of wisdom that I’m sure I will re-read it yearly. I’ve already finished some projects that I had been putting off because of it and haven’t even finished the book yet. I even ordered another and sent to my daughter in college who has problem with motivation at times.

Writing a review for this book presents an unusual challenge because the stated goal of the book is not merely to provide information, but to provide a self-help psychological program. It seems that in order to fairly review the book, one should undertake to follow the prescribed program.

To summarize the purpose of the book:

"The whole point of a therapeutic process is to help you feel better, to enjoy your life, to be happier. The Creativity Cure is a creative, do-it-yourself therapeutic process that is designed to make you more satisfied with your life and yourself through purposeful engagements that foster Creative Capacity. Creative Capacity leads you to your True Self and your Creative Self." (p. 255).

The book lists and describes some related mental syndromes which can be addressed by the program. Descriptions of each syndrome facilitate self-diagnosis (page 3 ff):

Sadness
Dissatisfaction
Mild to moderate depression
Mild to moderate anxiety
Rumination
Overstimulation

The prescribed program includes five areas of daily activity, to be undertaken for seven weeks:

"... the steps of the Five-Part Prescription: Insight, Movement, Mind Rest, Your Own Two Hands, and Mind Shift. You are going to devote at least one hour per day, for seven weeks, to the 5PP: ten minutes for Insight, fifteen minutes for Movement, five minutes for Mind Rest, twenty minutes for Your Own Two Hands, and ten minutes for Mind Shift." (p. 50)

I am recently retired, and have tried to engage in a less formal program including three of the five recommended parts: Insight, Movement, and Your Own Two Hands. For the use of hands, I have engaged in yard work and home maintenance, and have planned to get involved in wood working. However, I have suffered from a mildly guilty feeling that I should be doing something "more significant" with my time. This book affirmed for me that it is worthwhile and very beneficial to mental well being to work with one's hands.

I also plan to informally incorporate Mind Rest and Mind Shift into my informal program. Mind Shift is very important, and is described as follows:

"the point of Mind Shift is to force yourself to honor the good things about yourself, others, your life, your past, and your circumstances, in spite of any negatives that may have happened." (p. 49)

Though I have not decided to formally follow the prescribed program, I find the book to contain valuable information, and to be beneficial to my own mental well being.

Well written. Strong clinical background, with lots of science to support it. The book has a number of sections and exercises that are worth going through which means it's a read that will take you 8-10 weeks to get through if you're diligent and follow the book's structure. Highly recommend both the book and the approach!
