Deeper Into the Pond
A Celebration of Femininity
by Magdalena Ball and Carolyn Howard-Johnson
A Compulsive Reader Publication
A Military Writers Society award winner
ISBN:  978-1461159384
Review by LB Sedlacek originally published by LB's poetry newsletter
Filled with images and irresistible verse, "Deeper Into the Pond" is a collaboration between two well-known poets.  The poems pivot from one set of poems by one of the poets to the second set with a satisfying turn of the page.
The poems themselves, whether short or longer, fill up the page with their enormous words.  The book opens with "Transparent Love Song" by Howard-Johnson where she examines love it seems through reptiles, fish and butterflies.  The last lines of the poem sums it all up quite beautifully. Her poems are peppered with more relatable images:  cold cream, tractors, giant bags of cement and Ferris Wheels.
The poem "Ariel" has the Narrator becoming Ursula with words of finding music to tell their story under the sea to get back to the surface.  Her poems pair with each other quite nicely, a story unfolding with each one.
Magdalena Ball's section of poems opens with "Lady Godiva."  With lines of "that silly word / so many / die over" and "she shed more rings / than Elizabeth Taylor", it's a poem about choice.  Her poems are filled with raw emotion and journeys of experience. Her words are about making connections.
The dualities of these two poets present a real energy - you can't fully appreciate one set of poems without the other. Ball and Howard-Johnson create verse that is all-consuming - you will want to grab yourself a cup of coffee or tea and sit back, read and enjoy.
LB is a poet, author, editor, publisher and critic.  Her poems and stories have been published in numerous zines and journals.  Her latest poetry books are:  "The Adventures of Stick People on Cars" - Alien Buddha Press;  "Words and Bones," Finishing Line Press,; and "The Architect of French Fries," Presa Press, The Architect of French Fries.

"Vivid images in this collection of poems distil the lives of the women who wrote them. They speak to all the stages of life and our roles as women reminding us how far we've come and how much we have to be grateful for. They celebrate aging and our roles as wives, mothers, and lovers. Whatever your age these poems will speak to you of times to look forward to or to remember. These are not poems to read once. They will stay with you forever." ~ Nancy Famolari, poet and author of "The Lake House"
