Mark Twain, also known by his name Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an author and humorist.He was born on 30th Nov 1835 and died on 21st April 1910. His famous novels were, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "the Great American Novel." He was brought up in Hannibal , Missouri. He worked as a typesetter for his brother’s Orion Newspaper and also apprenticed with a printer. As a reporter he wrote humorous story , The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, which became very popular and brought nationwide attention. He was a great public speaker and writer.Twain was born during a visit by Halley's Comet, and predicted that he would "go out with it" as well. He died the day following the comet's subsequent return. He was acclaimed as the "greatest American humorist of his age, and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature.

Mark Twain: The Past Recaptured

Anyone who is familiar with the works of Mark Twain knows that they feature humor, humanity, and pessimism in almost equal measures. By the time he came to write his idiosyncratic autobiography, Twain had arrived at the biblical three score and ten and had buried both his wife, Olivia, and his favorite daughter, Susy. If he had dwelt on those losses, his autobiography would probably have reflected his later 'damned human race' views much more than it does. Instead, the two volumes of his autobiography, and especially the second, are largely devoted to a remembrance of good times past, with an emphasis in volume two on family life as often reflected in the biography of Twain written by Susy at age twelve or so. There is an undercurrent of sadness here, since Susy and Olivia and so many others had passed into that bourne from whence no traveler returns. But Twain, ever the storyteller extraordinaire, is able to resurrect and breathe life into these ghosts from the past to the point where they seem more alive to the reader--and no doubt to Twain himself--than the evanescent, ever-changing present. So, despite Twain's eccentric design for his autobiography--he starts every section in the present (i.e., 1906-7) and then moves anecdotally into the past, only to return to the present again--he is able to recapture the past in a way that is very satisfying to the reader and, no doubt, to the author himself. By the time he had turned seventy, Twain must have been a lonely and embittered man. But through his autobiography he was able to relive the best parts of his life and share them with his reader. A stellar example of art imitating life.

N.b. This is a review of the HARDBACK version of Twain's autobiography. Don't make the same mistake I made and order the paperback version--which is a bogus ripoff by an Indian so-called publishing house (the principals of which I'd love to get my hands on).

A Quick and Delicious Read

His take on politics, religion and human nature are as relevant now as they were then. So much so that he'd probably not be the least surprised by the current appetite for the vapid sound bites and reality shows. Historical figures are not made larger than life by Twain, but reduced to their human scale. From his assessment of Roosevelt's response to the brewing Russian revolution to the snapshot he provides of Harriet Beecher Stowe in her later years, his candor is refreshing. Depending on his mood he reveals himself as a dithering bumpkin, a vain and arrogant man, a humble man, an astute observer, independent thinker, loving husband and father.

Interesting look back at one of my favorite writers

Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) wrote randomly about people, places anf things of his period in life. He was frank on a number of occasions about people giving us a different twist on some folks that he liked, which was most, but he was also frank on why he had questions about others who are considered historically to be heroes. In reading the book expect his verbal pictures of life to be random and change rather frequently. Both Volumes I and II have left me waiting for Number III.

This second volume of Twain's autobiography is very informative and most entertaining. Any fan of his writings ought to read this volume as well as the first volume. Unfortunately, there are almost no footnotes or annotations/references in volume 2. Nonetheless, I look forward to a volume 3, if and when one is published. His was an extraordinary life, full of interesting travels and many famous persons of that era.

threads of happenings. A great insight into his times, as he was a keen
observer. He reveals the origins of many of his characters.

I loved Autobiography Of Mark Twain Vol 1 and enjoyed Vol 2. He is one of our brightest minds - sage, funny and an extraordinary observer of the human race.
