With revised and innovative operational art constructs, US Special Operations offer scalable and differentiated strategic options for US foreign policy goals. This book analyzes light footprint special operations approaches in Yemen, Indonesia, Thailand, and Colombia. When a large military presence may be inappropriate or counterproductive, Colonel Brian Petit makes the case for fresh thinking on Phase Zero operational art as applied by small, highly skilled, joint-force teams coupled with interagency partners. The past decade (2002-2012) of operations focused on large-scale, post-conflict counterinsurgency. Less publicized, but no less important in this same decade, was the emerging application of nuanced campaigns, actions, and activities in Phase Zero. These efforts were led or supported by special operations in countries and regions contested, but not at war. This book fills a gap in the literature of how to adapt the means, method, and logic of US military foreign engagements in a diplomacy-centric world with rapidly shifting power paradigms. Going Big by Getting Small is not a yarn on daring special operations raids nor a call for perpetual war. It is the polar opposite: this book contemplates the use of discreet engagements to sustain an advantageous peace, mitigate conflict, and prevent crises.

Excellent resource for the SOF operational level planner

This well written and thoroughly researched book is a valuable resource for those interested in the special operations application of operational art and design in developing pre-crisis, steady-state, shaping campaigns. COL Petit argues that "engagment" has emerged as the de facto grand strategy for the United States but our current concepts of operational design, which focus predominantly on dominating the enemy in combat, are in some ways inadequate to "operationalize" this strategy. To remedy this deficiency he recommends a modification to various elements of operational design as they apply to phase 0 or "pre-crisis" campaigns. These special operations "expressions" of the elements of operational design are intended to more accurately articulate the planning considerations that underpin SOF shaping activities worldwide. This is a nuanced approach that does not throw out the proverbial "baby with the bath water" but instead lends special operations specificity and applicability to existing doctrinal constructs. For the SOF operational level planner this book is an invaluable resource made all the more pertinent in light of the Army's regionally aligned force concept.

A must read for operational level planners

As a special operations planner and strategist this is the book I have been waiting on to help craft an operational approach for employing special operations forces (SOF) to more effectively achieve strategic objectives in an environment where we are not at war. The author makes strong arguments that our current operational level doctrine falls short when it comes to employing SOF in Phase 0 (a peacetime environment, or a conflict short of war), and he makes welcomed recommendations to address these shortfalls. Although the book is focused on SOF his recommendations have equal value for our general purpose forces who are also struggling with getting Phase 0 operational art right. I highly recommend this book for all theater level campaign planners, whether SOF or conventional force planners. The author provides welcomed recommendations that in time may transform our operational planning fundamentally. I also recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in foreign affairs, special operations, and our interagency process for implementing our national strategy (where it works, and where the dysfunction lies).

This is an interesting book in that it's obviously written for those with some expertise and background on the subject, but is nevertheless perfectly accessible to the rest of us. Of course, it doesn't hurt that there are quite a few charts, graphs and on site photos to keep any level of reader fully engaged. In short, anyone with any interest in special operations should certainly add Going Big By Getting Small to their library. Well written, easy to follow, and obviously authored by someone who knows firsthand from whence he speaks - the very definition of a "good read." Or at least that's my own personal definition!

If you are looking for yet another thrilling book detailing daring raids by bearded warriors, look elsewhere. In Going Big by Getting Small, Brian Petit lays out an intellectual framework in order to craft an operational and strategic approach to the use of Special Operations Forces (SOF) during peacetime. Petit rightly criticizes the current US approach to engagement, which is too often defined by a lack of coordination, synchronization, and long-term vision. Engagements which are not designed to achieve an operational or strategic objective waste valuable resources. The US military, and US SOF particularly, can be most valuable when utilized as part of an overall campaign plan developed by the embassy country team. This book provides valuable insights into crafting strategy utilizing military forces outside of war zones. The insights provided will prove valuable to all leaders interested in improving the utilization of SOF during peacetime in achieving policy objectives.
